Really disappointed that they 270 would be a cut-down 7950. There's no excuse for REDUCING the VRAM. That's just dumb. And if they cut the bus width as well, that's just insult to injury.

Probably because the 7950 and 7970 were just too close on performance once you equalized the clocks. Same reason why the 760's specs were adjusted. The 670 was just too close to the 580. Both companies likely felt they needed a bit more space between the 2 cards. Any consolation, it should make the 270 less expensive.

yeah GK110 released for the Tesla market in Nov 2012.

The real high volume part was the GTX 780 which launched in late May 2013. so actually R9 290X comes 5 months after GTX 780 which is slightly disappointing. but nonetheless its not too bad. Also AMD have swept the next gen consoles. the results of which are already showing in the form of closer collaboration with developers. Mantle is an impressive achievement by AMD/DICE. all these are going to affect Nvidia over the course of the next 2 - 4 years. The next 9 - 12 months are going to be fiercely fought by the two arch rivals and this will benefit all consumers in the form of lower prices.

R9 270X and R9 270 is based on a tweaked Pitcairn. R9 280X and R9 280 is based on a tweaked Tahiti. R9 290X and R9 290 is based on the completely new Hawaii GPU. Austin gives clear hints at the chips and their performance.

moreover the information that R9 270X is 8-9% faster than HD 7870 indicates R9 270X is a HD 7870 at 1.1 Ghz. very easy on a tweaked Pitcairn with GCN 1.1 style improved power management.

I'm almost ecstatic about 2x DL-DVI (after AMD DP hell for 2+ years) if it wasn't for this card being so late that I've gotten a 780 already. And I'm probably not the only one. But except for them being late, this bodes well for AMD.

I highly doubt it.All other reasons I find it stupid aside,I don't believe AMD would want to prohibit companies such as Sapphire from selling its GPUs.They are already in a tough spot in the market,fewer "friends" is the least they need.Plus,I don't think they'd go from not selling reference design GPUs (Or selling them in limited quantities) to selling only those.Maybe these will be the ones for preorder.

AMD is handling R9 290X launch much in the same way NVIDIA handled the GTX TITAN, in that there won't be non-reference design cards in the foreseeable future

Agreed that has been the case in the past, but the new reference cooler looked to have a bigger fan than normal (could just be my eyes)

I also wonder about those openings behind the fan on the "red stripes" if that somehow plays a part in cooling as well.
