OCZ 667 or 800?

Live in Canada, so Newegg prices and products aren't an option, so I've been searching around but am kinda stuck on selection (no G-skill or Geil, etc like people are reporting on Newegg). In any case.......

So, am planning on getting an E6300, Gigabyte GA-965P-S3, and now I need memory. Am thinking either:

1) OCZ GX XTC PC2-5400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2 CL4-4-4-12, or;
2) Ocz Gold Xtc PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-12

Assuming I wanna OC to 2.8 or 3.0 if I'm lucky with my Zalman 9500 (?), what is recommended? I'm assuming both will work with that mobo??? The price difference is about $10 more for the 800......go with slower speed but better timings? I figure I'll need to drop the multiplier anyways to hit the 2.8 ghz, so is the 667 better since it's rated CL4 already (rather than underclocking the 800 and trying to hit CL4?)

I'd appreciate any help. I'm on a bit of a budget so I can't spring for the really good 800 RAM since it costs a fortune here in Canuckland.

Much appreciated.

I have the Gold 667 myself...It's very stable RAM,but it doesn't have an affinity for high clock speeds. I max out at about DDR2-800 with 5-5-5-15 timings and 2.3VDIMM. However, they can run at CAS 3 with 2.0V at a bit less than rated speed.

If you are going to OC with an E6300 I would suggest the DDR2-800 since you NEED high FSBs to reach a high OC. A friend of mine is limited by his RAM because it won't OC past DDR2-750 stably. His ASUS P5B has a 533 divider as its lowest, meaning his Max OC is something like 2.4, 2.5 GHz. After that, his RAM can't run quickly enough.
Also, if you want to OC, I would suggest looking at the OCZ Platinum DDR2 DIMMS. They seem to be better OCers than the Gold series.

Does OCZ memory work with 965 chipsets yet? I remember everybody having a fit because OCZ wouldn't work with their new builds...has that been patched now?

Seriously?!?!

OCZ is very reputable, but compatibility with 965? What is everyone else using for RAM? Around here, the choices are basically: Corsair, OCZ, Mushkin, Kingston........

The ONLY other one that's reasonably priced is Patriot Signature 667. That any good? Maybe I should bite the bullet and get Corsair XMS2 800???

If I was you I would wait and not upgrade for another 6 months.
2 reasons:
1) the memory prices are at premium because of supply and demand. You could have bought same 2x1g $40-60 cheaper 3 months ago.
2) wait for AMD's k8L, it's a conroe killer.
You could buy a less expensive AM2 cpu, a good AM2 motherboard and just buy 2x512 DDR2 for now and wait for DDR2 prices to level off. This will give you a lot of leverage in 6 months when you just buy a K8L dual or quad core cpu and just drop it in AM2 motherboard.

You can try looking for G-skill or Geil on ncix.com, canadacomputers.com, directcanada.com if you haven't already. GL

Patriot, Mushkin, PQI, GeIL, Crucial, G. Skill, A-Data, Corsair, etc. Some overprice but most are decent (lol)

If you are only going to 400FSB then I would say cheaper 667mhz RAM will do the job as most will do 800mhz+ no sweat. If you're going higher than 400FSB then 800mhz RAM is the way to go.

Since you said you were only planning on going to 2.8ghz or so I would go with DDR2 667

Unfortunately I can't wait.....I'm selling my current rig and already have most of the new components purchased or on order

Ya, I've checked most Canadian sites DS, I'll take a second look for the G-skill or Geil.

So, forget about price for one second......is the Corsair (or G-skill or Geil) in this case better than the OCZ? Compatibility and OC'ing ability?

Almost all C2D boards are compatible with Kentsfield so if he wanted a quad core he could still get one with this setup.

Why buy a less expensive AM2 cpu that will get creamed by this E6300?

Nobody has benched K8L yet so how would we know if its a Conroe killer? It might turn out to be one but in all reality it should since its being released a full year after Conroe. This is just progression of technology I can't believe you are so biased towards one side.

In all honesty, nobody knows when RAM prices will come down so its almost stupid to wait unless you absolutely want to. You could be waiting for 1 month or 1 year.

I'm waiting to upgrade because the Conroe prices should drop when Kentsfield is released, also when G80 is released then maybe some video cards will drop in price. Also, maybe there will be some nice holiday deals on hardware.

EDIT- Yes, TBH I think any memory would be better than the OCZ it has major issues with the P965 chipset.

After rebates and such, the best deals I find now:

667
1) OCZ GX XTC PC2-5400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2 CL4-4-4-12 - $262
2) Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-5400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC5400 DDR2-667 CL 4-4-4-12 - $270

800
3) OCZ Gold Xtc PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-12 - $270
4) OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-5-4-15 - $295
5) Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 5-5-5-12 - $335

Rebates are a pain in the @$$, but ignoring that......it would seem the OCZ (Option#1) is best bet for 667, and OCZ Platinum (Option 4) for 800 are the best performers for the money. True? Unless Corsair is known to be better head-to-head against OCZ for these products......?

I am soooooo itching to get this ordered LOL.....is Option 4 the best choice for the S3 mobo in my situation? I should be able to produce some good speed on a decent budget with that setup........?

[edit: Just read about the OCZ issues with 965 chipset. What's with that??? Would a BIOS update fix it if there's issues? In which case, I guess the Corsair would be a better route for virtually the same price. So I wonder if then I should go 667 or 800? Choices, choices.....my head's gonna explode LOL

Thought I read somewhere that the 667 would actually outperform the 800? Is that at stock clocks or moderate OC'ing?)

Yeah listen to Mr.AMD and wait a year:disgust:

This guy never gives up with his pro AMD worship. Been proven wrong time and time again yet he stays and prays for AMD. He has to be getting paid. I don't know any other person like that. So irrational in thought , go team go mentality :disgust:

OP, get yourself some DDR2-800 RAM with either a E6300 or E6400 and call it a day

Well, seeing the probs with the 965 and OCZ, I won't have the patience to deal with that, so..........

Corsair FTW!

Too bad about the CL5 on it though.........guess I can't get everything, now can I?

It doesn't seem like he does.
Every known benchmark (almost) will put a Core 2 Duo ahead of an AMD rival CPU.
AMD isn't likely to be able to compete with C2D until Q4 2007 and by then Intel is LONG GONE AHEAD!!

I just got me the XMS/Asus P5B dlx/E6300 combo from NCIX.com (Canada) and all running fine at 3360 on 1.425v XMS at 1.95v running @960.

As long as I don?t approve any junk Intel offers, I am called AMD employee, paid by AMD, or proven wrong.
Get real, and stop promoting those junks.
How many times do you restart your junk because of constant freezes.
You know you restart button very well by now.
I suggest changing your case to the one's that have the buttons on top to make it easier for you.
Let me guess," PC surgeon" because you keep digging into the case, take off heatsink, clean cpu, check the wires, etc..etc.. all on daily basis. No wonder you picked such appropriate alias for yourself.
quit misinforming people. The K8L is due less than 6 months. I bet it hurts your rectum every time you hear or read the name "K8L".

Dude, ok, you have pushed me to the point of calling you an IDIOT! Thats right, you are an IDIOT!!!!!! How many times has my system froze? NOT ONCE! Put that in your pipe and smoke it. I'm OC'd to 3.5GHz there buddy, and NOT ONE freeze. You assume that I and every C2D gets freezing and has to restart, but put forth NO PROOF. Keep digging in the case blah blah blah? HAHA you are so stupid dude, get real, I havent taken my HSF off in over 3 weeks, does that sound like daily to you?

I am not a fanboy of a certain brand of anything. No matter what, I will acknowledge the best performing part, but you can't say that. Everyone knows it....EVERYONE. AMD had the crown for 3yrs and I owned a P4. I knew AMD was the best and told people so. The tables have turned now, Intel is the better performing chip period. When K8L does come out, it WILL probobly destroy what Intel has out now, but thats "then".

STOP being a fan of a brand and be a fan of performance!

Ok, back on track LOL...........

I went to bed last night without placing my memory order......thought I'd sleep on it. So after some rest, I'm now totally lost........I don't know what to buy. What speed, what brand, etc.

1) Should I go with the cheaper 667 RAM or spend the extra and go with the 800?

2) Does all OCZ have problems with 965 chipset? So if I wanna go with OCZ, do I HAVE to get some cheap DDR2 as well to get my new rig to boot? The OCZ here in Canada is one of the best peformance-for-price products (the current price difference is $100 cheaper than the Corsair 800!!), but that sounds like on helluva pain in the @$$ and I can't be bothered.

3) If OCZ does still have these issues, what product should I get instead? Selection here in Canada is far more limited.....I've checked DirectCanada, NCIX, CanadaComputers, Infonec.........

Just managed to find this:
G.SKILL F2-6400CL4D-2GBPK PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 - $327 (good stuff?)

Sorry if I'm such a n00b, I really need some expert advice though.

EDIT: I just noticed Force81 that you have a very similar setup to what I would be getting. Did you have problems with the OCZ on the 965 DS3 mobo???!!!??? I'd really be interested in hearing what you did!!!!

Hi Skyguy,

I have had no problems whatsoever and they are running cool as well at 860Mhz now. Orthos Large FFT stable for 9hours (one of the best tests for your RAM incl CPU, but the CPU part here is of no importance at this moment).
So I could say go for the OCZ! I had the 667 before these ones and am very satisfied with switching to 800!!

I will now point you to the God of all RAM, no thanks needed. Just take off your shoes before installing its holyness.

Team Group DDR2-6400 | 800MHz 4-4-4-10

I own this RAM and I couldn't be more happy with it.

Oh, and one more thing, sacrificing some old DDR will please his holyness

OCZ ram does not have problems with the 965 chipset, all our DDR2 ram is compatible.

There has been a learning curve with all the new C2D and AM2 board in respect to SPD settings, etc. 2 weeks ago we have released a new SPD that solves all the issues with these new boards, 90% of this is caused by the bios of the boards and their default settings.

This is true. Altho I hope you don't get an older board that has an older BIOS and have to use one stick of something else just to get it to run. Some have had to do that. Otherwise OCZ could be your ticket. Maybe ask the place your buying it from to look for BIOS date/version?

Thanks guys, just what I was looking for!!!! Well, I was really set on the OCZ to be honest. I'm also hoping that the F5 BIOS will be on the board when I get it, rather than having to flash it....I'm so lazy these days LOL.

Looks like it's the OCZ Platinum 6400 @ 4-5-4-15......for the price, I can't argue with that! So with the new SPD, think I'll be ok if I order my stuff now, or will I have to manually update??
