I've always hated OCZ since their early days (before management shakeup) where the did shenanigans with system memory.

Still really distrust this brand.

That's what turned me off to OCZ. Ram sticks that wouldn't run at their rated timings or speeds, constant RMAs and poor support. They've always been a shady company in my eyes.

Sad to see them go as they did make serious waves in the SSD market. Loved their Vertex's as one of the best SSD's ever made. Never heard of anyone who had trouble with them. Well, heard some did, but I never seen any proof

But, no sweat, lots to chose from...

The Indilinx SSDs are great. Sandforce, not so much. At least not the early ones. The perceptions and bandwagoning could not be changed with their later drives.

So much for the "180-day warranty" on all of my refurb OCZ SSDs that I've been purchasing from Newegg lately.

Maybe the price will go down further, if there's no warranty anymore, and I can pick up dozens of them for a song.

And possibly have one working after six months.

At one time OCZ built the fastest DDR Ram on the market PC 3200 Platinum OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K that would run at 2-3-2-5 IT at 418Mhz's @2.8v. I still have 6 Sticks of them.

Any body wanna build a super fast Socket A ;o)

I'm really surprised it took this long. This company sold garbage repeatedly. Both Memory and SSD's. I, like everyone else, gave them a shot and was of course sold something that was slower than advertised, died, and then not allowed a refund. Luckily we have decent vendors like Newegg who cleaned up OCZ's mess.

Good riddance. They should have gone bust years ago.

Hmm I got their PSU. Price was quite attractive and there is zero problem with it.

yeah i am still rocking the $29 a/R agility 3 128gb - bout what its worth. they totally did a ponzi - set us up the bomb rebate scam. how many millions in rebates you think are now dead in the water? reminds me of that place that did massive rebates on products and skipped town.

Everyone saw this coming.

Once upon time there was a poor batch of memory that didnt oc well at normal voltages.
What OCZ did is they sanded down the chips so they would cool better and sold it as fast memory.
I beleive anandtech even did a review on it so long ago.

The early PC 3200 Platimum OCZ24002048ELDCPE-K oc good but the latter ones which I rma 2x did not and was the last item I bought from ocz.

During those early memory days only Geil memory was worse.

I have never been tempted to buy any OCZ products, primarily because the anecdotal consensus against them has been so strong. So, . . . turn the page . . . requiescat in pace. Good luck, Toshiba.

Apart from their pcp&c line their psus are also abit flaky. Lots of refurbs were floating around. They were a shady company for a long time.

This isn't really a big deal. OCZ tried to sell the Vectors at higher-than 840 Pro prices. If Crucial declared bankruptcy I'd be upset, but OCZ? They're barely a step above RAMBUS to me.

I find it unfortunate myself, as they really did lead the charge in SSD performance in the consumer market right up till the end (when they started trading blows with the 830 / 840 Samsungs).

I have 2 Vertex 2's, and 4 Vertex 4's, and never had problems with any of them (and the 4 Vertex 4's see 24/7 use right now in a server). I'll personally miss em

Oh man, sometimes I would really want to build some XP 3200, 2 gigs of this RAM with LanParty mobo and 6600GT card, but still that was 10 years ago and it wouldn't be relevant to do anything on it now beside web browsing and office work and probably some outdated gaming.

I retired my socket A rig in mid 2012.

I had one of their 3.5" 128G Vertex 2 drives, cost nearly $300 at the time as I recall. Had problems from the start, which was bad, but having to grovel for support via their forum while having OCZ fanboys insult you; you know, the same shills they inserted into this forum, was even worse. They finally sent me a replacement that failed about a month after being installed. At that point, I wrote it off the same way you reconcile being mugged.
A lousy company with crap products that should have died a long time ago.

I only kept one build that was N7 with xtpe and a OCZ ram booster.
On 9/11 when the planes hit I was picking up a bios chip for it.

I bought an OCZ Octane S2 SSD about a year ago. They kept failing after a week of use and after I went through 3 drives, I gave up and bought an Intel, which worked flawlessly.

Wasted countless hours reinstalling my OS on each drive only to find that the drive was defective.

Bye bye OCZ. I won't miss them.

Only good things will happen from this. Now that Toshiba has agreed to buy OCZ assets for $35 million.

1) A large ssd manufacture won't be making bad crappy drives that give all ssds bad reputation on reliability.
2) A large oem that did rebate scams is gone
3) You won't have to deal with OCZ crappy support.
--------
4) Toshiba agrees to pay debtor in possession financing. This means OCZ warranties will still be fulfilled while OCZ recovers. It is not clear that Toshiba will do OCZ warranties after the sale is complete. Furthermore OCZ engineers will not have to jump ship as soon as possible (engineers have to pay mortgages and bills) if the get DIP so some of the engineering talent may stay and go to toshiba.
5) Yet the IP and hard work that OCZ did will survive with Toshiba, it won't be just abandoned and destroyed similar to burning books. I personally believe the problem with OCZ is that OCZ did not validate their products and they rushed their products to market (this bit them in the but with reliability), Toshiba being a larger company will not allow this to happen.

Rest in peace OCZ.

It is official now...
http://ir.ocz.com/news/detail/3014/...oration-to-acquire-solid-state-drive-business

SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 12/02/13 -- OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: OCZ), a leading provider of high-performance solid state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today announced that the Company has signed an asset purchase agreement with Toshiba Corporation, a global technology leader and manufacturer of NAND flash memory, to acquire substantially all of OCZ's assets in a chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding for $35M. Under this agreement Toshiba will acquire OCZ's client and enterprise solid state drive business. OCZ will continue to operate and serve existing and future customers during this process. Toshiba has agreed to provide the Company with DIP (Debtor-in-Possession) financing to ensure that there is adequate capital and flash supply to support the business during the contemplated sale period. The consummation of the asset purchase agreement is subject to an auction and approval by the bankruptcy court in the Company's bankruptcy case.

This acquisition will provide Toshiba with access to OCZ's proprietary controllers, firmware and software, as well as the teams responsible for bringing these solutions to market, in addition to OCZ's established brand and sales channels. This strategic opportunity will bring critical controller IP and NAND supply all under one global organization, allowing for an even more robust and competitive solid state solution offering for all of OCZ's and Toshiba's mutual customers moving forward.

In many ways OCZ had good products, perhaps they just weren't refined enough... let's see if Toshiba takes the ball and runs with it. The potential is certainly there...
