Hey

I am wondering which ram is better to get for OCing a Q6600.

4GB OCZ Gold CL5
or
4GB OCZ Platinum CL4

thanks

Welcome to Anandtech Forums, nekromantik.

"Better" RAM is always the faster RAM. However, with a Q6600 having a reasonably high multiplier and with RAM having so little impact on actual performance, I would go with the cheaper RAM. If there isn't much difference (maybe less than $5) I would get the better stuff.

Buy the 4GB kit that's rated to run at the JEDEC voltage standard of 1.8-1.9v

I think both kits atr rated 2.1volts tho
will that make a diff on OCing?
The price diff is £10 between them

Is OCZ the only brand you have access to?

Agreed. After some overclocking I run memory at lowest voltage possible. (which is usually 1.8~1.9V) If I could get CL4, great, but if not I don't feel like losing anything with CL5. (Though I have some aversion toward CL6. lol)

OCZ Platinum over Gold, & likely over Corsair XMS2 also, though they are all most likely PSC.
OCing results will be mainly luck + binning if you are looking to do some OCing.

Anything DDR2-800 is adequate for OCing a Q6600 though.

You shouldn't have such aversions on Intel chipsets

You lose little going from tCL 5 to 6 on P45 especially.

DDR2-1121 6-5-5

DDR2-934 5-5-5

These aren't optimized or stable [1121] results; they're just something i wish i could run...
Sadly as usual, getting 8 GB truely stable at high speeds like that doesn't seem to happen for me, so i run 1:1 bitterly...

For overclocking q6600 generic DDR2 800 sticks would be enough, as you wouldn't have to overclock the mem till u go past 3.6ghz on the quad. Which very few q6600 make, especially ones lately with high VIDs. There is really no point to buy more expencive ram unless you need them to clock high.

I use some 4 cheap Patriot DDR2-800 CL5 sticks. All 4 can run at 880 speeds with standard 1.8v.
