OCZ Ram + Venice

I'm having some troubles with my OCZ ram I just purchased:

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/m...z_el_ddr_pc_3200_dual_channel_platinum

I can hit 2.7ghz fine on my 3200 Venice with cheap twinmos value ram
(divider at 150, htt at 270, so thats right at 200mhz ram w/ twinmos
default timings, cpu volts at 1.5 * 110%). My motherboard is running
the 3/10/05 bios and my PSU is an OCZ modstream 450. (By the way,
some of the twinmos ram was actually winbound UTT, mine is definitely
NOT that.)

However, once I put my OCZ ram in with the exact same setup, I get
random reboots and I can't get very far in the Windows XP install
before I encounter the BSOD. I even increased the ram voltage from
2.6v to 2.8v (only warranties to 2.8). I can't seem to find errors
in memtest. I'm essentially running the RAM at rated speeds at
approximately 202mhz. (BIOS settings are all at auto)

Are there any known compatibility issues between this ram and the DFI
motherboard? I'm very puzzled why the twinmos is more stable than
this ram. I can barely overclock using this ram on the DFI. I checked the DFI forums and didn't find anyone having specific problems with OCZ ram.

Nothing wrong with OCZ ram.

Post in the OCZ thread in this forum for help.

You can post there too, but Ryder and I post here also. He already PMed me so there's no point in posting in two different forums now.

When you figure this out, could you please post the answer here? I just bought almost the exact same setup: AMD64 3000+ Venice, DFI Lanparty Ultra-D, 1GB OCZ 3200 Platinum Ed., OCZ Modstream 450

Thanks.

PeteE - Here's the lowdown. OCZ John has been very helpful with the sticks, but the main issue here is whether or not the OCZ ram will work with memory dividers on a DFI nf4 motherboard. My twinmos value ram works fine with a memory divider on that setup, so I've kind of ruled out the cpu or the motherboard being the culprit. Unfortunately, when you buy ram, there is nothing that says the ram will work perfectly fine with memory dividers, just at the rated speed.

The OCZ seems to work fine at 200htt w/ 2 3 2 5 timings. So I'm not sure if its they are bad sticks of ram at all. But if I run htt > 200 with a divider to keep the ram speed at 200 at 2 3 2 5 timings, I'm getting random reboots and I CANT install XP at all. I'm going to run extensive memory tests on the ocz at 200 2 3 2 5 to make sure its not a bad pair of ram.

I'm hoping there are other people here with this setup that can attest to whether or not they can run it fine with dividers. Maybe its just a compatibility issue with the ocz ram and dfi. I know that dfi board can be picky with its ram.

Why go there when there are 2 OCZ reps. that post actively here?

I say go there because that is the official OCZ tech help forum, hosted on bleedinedge.com
When I say OCZ reps post there ... they are there ALL the time.

Try flashing to a new Bios. The 510s are getting pretty good feedback. Those aren't rev2s so I don't think they are TCCD chips (I'm sure John or Eric could tell you better then I). Go for 510-3 since the -3s seem to be geared for a wider variety of memory.

I offered him an RMA for that memory and the offer still stands if he wishes to accept it. I also told him that I would pre-test his replacements on the same board he has to make sure that it's a working set before it leaves the OCZ office.

Wow, now that customer service! I can see I won't have any trouble with my new RAM!

Just to make it clear, the problem is NOT with the ram running at its intended speeds. I'm still running memtest86 on its intended speed with no problems.

The problem is if I bump HTT > 200 and use a divider to keep it at its rated speed is when the problems occur. Big thanks to John for offering the RMA, but ocz will only test at its rated speed. My current pair is still testing and running fine at its intended speed. If ocz's new sticks pass at rated speeds but still crashes with a divider, it does me no good.

I'm still trying to figure out if putting the memory divider to this specific model/brand of ram + DFI nf4 is what is causing the random reboots.

I may try one of the newer beta bios as the other person suggested. Question- Can you revert back to an older one with no problems?

Well, I got my components finally, and at first I'm seeing the same results as Frown66. The same ram as in OP would crash windows with any memory divider other 100 (1/2) and 200 (1/1). This is running at stock timings 2-3-5-2 1T. My FSB also seemed to top out at 250 with the 100 divider.

Then I tried the ram at 2T (Command Per Clock = disabled) and then it was totally happy at any divider, and I was able to set the FSB up to 295 and booted safely into windows. Currently I'm running my 3000+ at that FSB, 2655.2 MHz, with the 140 memory divider.

Yupyup A lot of winchesters/venices have problems (of varying degrees) with 1t.

Doh!! Wish you found this out 3 days earlier I ended up using the OCZ ram for a "budget" system build for someone. memtest86 ran for 6+ hours with zero errors at 200mhz, so I didn't feel the ram was bad nor an RMA would help (thanks for the offer though John!).

In my lame scientific test, I left all ram settings at auto (except for the divider). I should have left Command per Clock disabled. I'm mad at myself for missing that as it seems to have made all the difference in the world. Oh well, 2 3 2 5 can't be that much of a difference in performance compared to 2.5 3 3 6... at least I hope not

This is some disturbing news as I am currently building a new A64 system and was planning on using the OCZ pc3200 gold-vx memory I am using in my current AXP system. I already have a DFI Lanparty nForce 4 Ultra-D mobo, A64 3500+ (winchester), and 2 WD caviar SATA150 80GB 7200/8mb for raid 0. I bought the mobo and cpu specifically for getting clock speeds over 2.6ghz and up till this article have had no problems with the memory I have. Should I just buy different memory or sacrifice the 1T for 2T and try to stick it out? I'm not exactly sure if my OCZ Gold-VX is TCCD or not and I've read that the Ultra-D insists on it. How do I find out? Also, I know the Gold-VX memory is incredibly stable at higher voltages, but to achieve the 2.6Ghz I'm looking for would it be better to upgrade to PC-4000 dimms (as far as the stress my current memory would go through)? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I havn't started putting my rig together yet.

Desired Specs:
A64 3500+ Winchester @ 2.6Ghz
DFI Lanparty nForce 4 Ultra-D
1GB OCZ PC-3200 Gold-VX
80GB (40GB Raptors X2 in Raid-0)
160GB (80GB WD Caviar 7200/8mb X2 in Raid-0)
geForce 6600GT PCI-E
Case: Thermaltake Tsunami (black) PS: Rosewill 550W

Are you building a system as an upgrade from your current? If so, it doesn't look to be much of an upgrade. If you're a gamer, just get a 6800gt APG for under $300 and call it good.

If not consider the Value VX line or the Patriot LLK, and use a divider to keep it close to 200MHz with low latency.
