Never did I realize that ssd was having so much of a problem. I never did dream that this topic would become 4 pages long. I have not bought an ssd yet. I don't know for sure how much it will help me with my video editing as compared to just putting a raptor in its place.

A raptor is only incrementally better in terms of performance compared to other mechanical drives.

If you need IO performance then nothing but an SSD (or two) will do. I suggest you google your motherboard along with the SSDs on your shortlist and see if there are any major issues. Don't discuss OCZ as they really screwed up and a lot of people are not happy with them. Also, they don't do anything unique when it comes to SATA drives and their PCIe drives are overpriced and have even more problems (if one SF controller is enough to cause endless headaches, imagine 4 or 8!).

I currently have a 120GB corsair F3 in an AMD E350 netbook and I haven't had any SSD related issues... plenty of driver issues with the netbook though!

Just be prapared to put up with some nonsense when you go with an SSD. Whatever you do, don't get a raptor... If the name wasn't enough of a clue, this is dinosaur tech

I can't afford to put up with nonsense. If I am doing a football edit on a Friday night I have a 6am deadline on Saturday morning. Dinosaur tech compared to SSD? I have talked to people that edit with them and they are much faster than a standard drive but not near as fast as SSD.

I've run the newer Velocirapters x4 in R0 and while they certianly are "faster"(mostly due to seek time).. they are not what you would call "much faster". Must be a perspective thing, I guess.

Anyone know anything about the Plextor PX-M2 Series PX-256M2S 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)? Good deal right now.

Just wanted to say i told you so when i posed this a while back.....

here you go...

Expect Intel to sort out the sandforce controller issues via updated Orom's and RST drivers. That will sort alot of it out I'd imagine.

Besides user config issues.

Intel sandforce driven drives are about to hit and all of a sudden a new firmware appears that fixes almost all issues.I put bet alot of money that Intel threw some money at Sandforce to work alot harder on the issue.

I've come back onto the AT forums here after a few years sabbatical to vent that building my brand new Mini-ITX system with an Asus P8H67-I Deluxe mobo, my OCZ Agility 3 SSD died after exactly 6 days--BSODing and disappearing from BIOS. First with 2.11 firmware and then on a brand new second replacement Agility 3 another 6 days later.

Avoid OCZ and/or SandForce like the plague if you have a newer motherboard since it seems older-generations of SSDs and/or mobos have less trouble.

http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?94404-Agility-3-Disappearing-from-BIOS

just a thought...were you using the same SATA cables? Same SATA ports?

I too have been saying that for quite some time. If the shoe fits! lol

Course.. if some neighsayers are right and Intel doesn't end up using these controllers after all?.. we'll look like we know even less than we already do.

I have 2 standing bets saying they will though and the fact that Sandforce was pretty much caught dragging their feet like("hmm.. we can't seem to replicate this at all yet") until Intel is nearing release. Then suddenly.. "hey.. we found all these issues.. here you guys go"... and viola. lol

And for the one's who think that the firmware is the ONLY one to blame here?.. how can OROM's, Intel drivers, and power mgmt hacks help so many before this firmware comes out? Could it be that Intels variations and power mgmt strategies are undermining the ability of previous firmware had something to do with it? Naaa.. can't be. Gotta be entirely OCZ fault somehow. lol

If that does turn out to be the case, I can see SF's current partners going to town on them. In a big way.

Ok, I'm trying to get my Agility 3 running but keep getting problems.

* If I turn on AHCI in BIOS, the computer crashes on boot. I have a Gigabyte P55-UD3P mobo.

* If I run the OCZ Toolbox, it downloads the new firmware (2.15, my drive has 2.11) but does not install it.

Any help please?

that's an easy one. You are probably installed in IDE mode and will first need to do the reg edit before you can successfully boot into AHCI mode. Google.. "changing from IDE to AHCI mode after install" for the easy way round that issue.

Second issue is related to the first since the toolbox needs to be running in AHCI mode.

To build on groberts response, I had do deal with the same issue yesterday updating the firmware on my drive. Even easier than manually editing the registry is to go to the MS site here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976 and use the downloadable fix. After I did that I was able to go into the BIOS, change to AHCI, boot, and then apply the firmware update.

fwiw, OCZ is recommending that i image, secure erase, and then restore for the 2nd time in about 6 months to fix an issue with a first gen agility.

I'm just glad I came out almost even returning the OCZ Vertex Plus and getting back what I paid. All I lost was time troubleshooting that dang drive.

Helpful hint here... push hard to get all the d-flash files for that drive. Go over there(OCZ) and get the nand identity tool to pinpoint what you have so they can be sure the d-flash files sent will be the correct ones.

These utilities will have greater access to the firmware code and eliminate the need to SE altogether since they are destructive in nature. Just a much better way to re-establish a proper baseline for these controllers and possibly even fix some other underlying issues while you're at it.

well now they're going to RMA me as the drive won't stay available in windows for more than a minute or so after boot.
