OCZ still a good company?

Hey all,

I have a co-worker who is selling 4gb of Reaper HPC 1066 for $25, as he built a new system. I was thinking of buying it, as I would like to OC, but my MB has issues with passing memtest at 800. Thing is, I've kinda been picking up the vibe that alot of you here don't like OCZ. I had some of thier DDR Platinum back in the day, and it worked flawless for 5 years. The newegg reviews of this ram are 67%, which isn't all that great, but it looks like alot of those low scores were due to rebates issues.

I seem to recall the companies to be jittery with are corsair, kingston, and crucial.

Borrow it and see if it can pass memtest and P95 at 1066 with the listed timings and voltages. If it does, buy em.

Are you refering to the board being jittery with those companies memory, or the companies themselves?

Also, I guess he sold the memory a couple of weeks ago, but didn't update his classified ad. I guess part of my original question still stands. How does OCZ work with P35 boards.

honestly if the company offers a lifetime warranty then your probably good to go.

There are only so many chip manufacturers in the world, and all the companies like OCZ, Corsair, Kingston, all buy their chips from the same few companies, which chip maker is better trades off every few months, and just like processors they have batches that are better yields then others, which are the ones that get rated for higher end (faster, tighter timings).

I have 8GB OCZ reaper HPC 2GBx4 in my system right now, and it's rock solid.

Yea, it's funny. The motherboard I had before this one had issues with the very first run of Ballistix ever made, so I had to send it back for the OCZ. Seems like things haven't changed or I just have crappy ass luck.

I had some OCZ ddr2 die after running it at 2.3 volts for like 3 years, other than that it was really good ram... overclocked like a beast (d9s); but i cant give them bad credit cuz i was overvolting so im very happy with OCZ

I remember their early days...
They never made it to "good company" status in my book.
That's my opinion, others may just love them.

Every part I've had from OCZ has failed. Two power supplies (both DOA) and 4gb 1066kit.

The power supplies were upgraded from 600W to 700W part that cost $250 at the time. I paid $100 for the original part and both new power supplies are working after 5 years of 24/7 operation.

The 1066kit was RMA'd in a few days and I ended up getting 2 kits the second time as a "thank for you being patient" after I told them that it was the only memory in my system.

Despite the high failure rate I've had, I am extremely happy with how they handled the RMA service, and the fact that they've always provided me a nice upgrade for my headache. I also have a few friends I built rigs for with their Ram, power supplies, and SSD drives. None of those parts have ever had a problem. I've personally had the worst luck in the world, and I'd be happy to buy their stuff in the future.

Yea, I got a set of the supposed "fixed" batch of DDR2-800, and it still fails memtest. Though I'm starting to think my motherboard is defective, since I've ran 3 sets of Ballistix and 1 set of Corsair through it, and all have failed.

All my replacement stuff and newer are doing just fine.

QTF. Specially since my "fixed" batch throws errors like I drink on weekends.

OK, we'll go with it's all bad and don't buy any Crucial and OCZ.

Sticks435, stay away from your buddie's deal.

Whatever Blaine's running, buy that!

I don't think his MB supports Tonicom PC-166 memory.

All kidding aside, I don't think it matters what I get, I don't think it'll be stable in this board. I should have sent it back when the first 2 sets failed.

I've read about MBs that kill RAM but I don't have any personal experience.

Have you tried to look at the voltage in the BIOS to make sure that's not the culprit?
