I am looking to purchase my first ever ssd and found a used(only 2 months) at quite a good bargain. but I concerned about the following problem with vertex 4:

1. In reviews,I read that after filling up 50%, its performance drop drastically. well how much is the performance drop?? are all other ssd prone to this problem or only ocz ssd's.

2. Can I check how many read/write cycles have been used up already?

3. Lastly, Is vertex 4 128gb is a good ssd ? because I read somewhere that Indilinx Everest 2 controllers are just modified version of sandforce controller. so, worried about its reliability.correct me,if I am wrong??

Thanks in advance.

1. If you write more than 50% of the free space on the drive all at the same time, it will slow down temporarily until the write is finished. Once the write is finished the drive will take a moment to perform some "cleanup" and then will return to the faster state.
Example: You have 75GB free space, you move a 45GB file over to the drive. In the middle of that transfer you will notice a slowdown until the transfer is finished. After a short time, the drive will return to higher speeds.

2. You use the Toolbox that can be downloaded here: http://ocz.com/consumer/download/firmware

3. Everest 2 controller is NOT a modified SF controller, it is a completely different controller.

I've never owned a Vertex 4, but I've heard that they are decent drives. They are NOT SandForce, thankfully. (I would personally recommend avoiding SandForce-controller drives, except perhaps Intel's with their 5-year warranty. I bought a Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB, and it died the first month in my netbook.)

I'm a fan of the OCZ Vertex Plus R2 drives. Note the "R2", the original Vertex Plus drives had some issues. I've been using three of the 120/128GB R2 drives in various systems (laptops and desktops), and they've been great. Not quite as high-performance as a modern SATA6G SSD (the Barefoot 2 controller is only SATA2), but very reliable.

It's just a thing with this drive, though. Even over half full, the performance is pretty good. The main issue was reviewers not knowing that up front.

Not sure. Life remaining starts at 100 and goes down. That might be the best you'll get.

It's a Marvell controller, with marketing BS applied, not Sandforce (custom firmware, really no different than Crucial or Plextor). However, they seemed to have made some batches with subpar flash, that have been having excessive bad blocks for some users. So, if you have one, or it's cheap, great...but, I wouldn't go out of my way for one, given other options available, today.

When I will be purchasing a SSD main thing which concerns me is the stability & performance in the longer run. Not just going by few comments or few benchmark results which can be tweaked at times. I am always for OWC Mercury Electra 6G 256 GB which makes my every penny worthy
