Note that this is the SAME value as most spindle HDDs... And if you believe that I have a bridge to sell you.
Taltamir, MTBF is used as a measure of reliability. Probably they took ~95% percentile in normal distribution. That doesn't mean they will last as long. They are not measuring lifespan. it is a possibility of a failure rate.
I know exactly how they test MTBF and what it tests mister. So can the condescending.

That is even assuming that they tested that... they are usually just extrapolating, saying drive X is similar to drive Y therefore they have same reliability... there is also rounding, the fact that there is no independent testing, etc etc.
And a "how many drives fail within an hour" measurement is:
1. highly malleable (they can make it say what they want by altering the test slightly)
2. worthless in terms of reliability... all it tells you is how many units are defective off the production line. (because only a unit that is defective off the production line would fail in an hour).
True true it is just extrapolation or regression analysis that is.
I was not talking about the reliability of the info or how true the information they supply to their customers. And even fooling customers giving out such numbers they don't mean anything to most.

sure. I guess I am pretty defensive about MTBF, everyone time I tell people it is a BS measurement people come and tell me that I simply do not understand it. Then follow to describe and explain it in detail... all of which I know and all of which doesn't change it being misleading marketing drivel.
I would go so far as to say the MTBF is not a meaningful measurement to anyone. I can't think of a single customer type that would find useful information in MTBF measurements given by HDD makers.
