Here is what I determined:
If the serial starts with an "I" and the model number on the box ends in "RV1" it is an Optorite
If the serial starts with a "3" and the model number on the box ends in "RV2" it is an NEC.

You can also tell by wieght, the NEC is heavier than the Optorite.

Mine is U-30182-RV3 with serial number P103436xxxxx.

Oh yea, it is brand new (not refurbished or oem) and mine was manufactured in October 2003. Well, im off to get some cheap dvd media.

Me too! Must have been 300 people in front of me at BB this morning, fortunately most were interested in other things, like the $20 dvd player, etc. so I got my Liteon, now I've got to return the $100 buslink (rebadged Liteon).

I only now from experience that a serial beginning with "I" is Optorite and a serial beginning with "3" is an NEC. Let us know what you get with that serial.

I got back from BB this morning and they ran out of Lite-On 411s. However, someone dropped off 2 120GB Maxtor's for $50AR so that was worth the trip. Then I found out when I got back that the Lite-On is available online, so I ordered one. I told my cousin to get one too, but he was late by like 5 minutes cause when he logged onto the BB site it was Sold Out.

The front of the tray comes off too, which is included when you buy a black bezel. I'm just having difficulty finding one.

I got a PD DVD burner this morning from Staples and the box says "U-30182-RV3" and the serial number starts with a "P". I got a BTC. Bargainshopper, is your drive a BTC too?

So from all the info gathered here is how you might determine what dvdrw drive you get for the Pacific Digital:

If the serial starts with an "I" and the model number on the box ends in "RV1" it is an Optorite.
If the serial starts with a "3" and the model number on the box ends in "RV2" it is an NEC.
If the serial starts with a "P" and the model number on the box ends in "RV3" it is an BTC.

Check that against your box before opening it or you might get a drive you did not want. But $60 for any brand dvd drive just as long as it works with good brand dvd media is a deal to me.

I dunno about Optorite. Some say they are OK. I do wish BTC would go out of business. They have been nothing but trouble to me.

OTOH, I'd take the Lite-on over either the optorite or BTC and probably the NEC.

I bought the Pacific Digital at Staples and from the first post, it seems that this drive is an Optorite. How do I verify what this drive actually is? In Windows Device Manager it only states it as being Generic DVD Dual 4XMax. And this it what is says in Nero also. Is there any other way of determing what my drive is and what model number? Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Not sure if this will do it, but it's worth a shot - try a program called "sisoft sandra". It's a benchmarking program that gives a lot of detailed info about your components as well. At least one version is free (I've used it for years and never had it do anything funny - crash, send advertisements, nag about buying the full version, etc.)

I'm not at home right now or I'd pull it up to see how it ID's my CD burner ("Cendyne" labeled Lite-On). I'm hoping it works, I should be getting my DVD burner in the mail this week and also want to know what I got.
