tiger: What's different about the D540X-4D vs older models? That's the one I got too...

Here was my experience. I ordered the drive and a pen online last night for instore pickup with the 30/100 coupon. When I went to the store, the employees were clueless about how to handle a internet order. Finally a manager came, I showed him my email confirmation printout and he pulled it up on the computer. Then he had to go wander the aisles and get the HD and pen (so what's the point of ordering online if they still have to go get it when you get there?) He rang it up normally and I pointed out the 30 off... he had no clue what that was! I also pointed out the PM with compusa... he was completely lost by now, so he gave up and rang up the drive at 69.99 (pm to 99, then 30 off). When the rebate form printed, he was blown away and gave me a weird look. I just took it and left

No D740X here...just got the ol' 40GB 7200 ATA 100 (I'm assuming the rebate is to rid the channel of these in preparation for the new models which offer ATA 133). Oh well, I can use this for archiving and wait for the new ATA 133 models to come down a bit for the new box.

And Office Depot is just way to disorganized at the store for my tastes.

<< Just got my 5400 drive from Office Depot

Brought in a printout of my online cart showing the coupon and a printout from CompUSA showing the $99.99 price. No problems at all.

Came out to $80 before rebate.

Just opened the box, my drive is the newer model, the D540X-4D.
>>

I just did the same thing, but I ordered online for in-store pickup (same as I did with the 20gb last week).
I then took the printout for BestBuy and CrapUSA, along with printouts showing "in-stock" in our local stores.
You can never be too prepared!! Anyways, no problem what-so-ever with the PM.
The lovely young lady behind the counter just credited my credit card for $21.60 - the difference of the PM - EVERYTHING WENT PERFECT!!

As far as the model though, I got a Model #4D040H2 - whatever in the hell that is! I guess I'll have to check!
It doesn't appear to be the one you guys are mentioning!!

UPDATE: Well, I guess (according to Maxtor site) this is a D540X.

not sure.... I just know it is a newer model. The only things I see are:

officedepot.com won't let me purchase the drive saying it's not in stock at the store (which I called and does in fact have it in stock). I put together some paperwork, verified that the bestbuy next door had them in stock at $99, and visited OD. The manager was very kind and matched Best Buy's price no problem. She however flat out refused to honor any 'internet' coupons. She wanted to see printed out coupon codes - the only one of which I could find was a $10 off $50....

Not good, but still a good deal...

Any luck price matching online? Any idea if there is a printable version of the $30 off $100?

It gets better, I ordered online working through retail locations until it let me order for pickup from one. When I went to pick it up the store manager refused to match Best Buy's price saying that they cannot make any adjustments to online purchases....

So I called a CSR inquiring about a pricematch and was told that they do not consider Best Buy or CompUSA a competitor and therefore would not price match...

It's my lucky day!

I managed to pick up the last one at my store, looks like these are hot sellers anyway, without the deal!! (I have to admit, $80 after MIR for a 40GB drive is a good price in the first place)

I got it for $76 out the door with tax, minus the $40..that'll be $36 in the end! Good deal...Hopefully I will see the rebate..hah! The guy at the checkout counter didn't even let me say 5 words before giving me over to the assistant manager, and they ok'd it. I brought a copy of the cart screen, showing $30 off $100, the $30 off $100 taken from referral ID graphic they show you (when you get the coupon on officedepot) and also a copy of compusa.com's webpage showing it for $99.99. The assis. manager kept all copies.

Thanks everyone, I really didnt need a 40 gigger but I was gonna go for the $50 20GB 5400 at best buy anyway, if this didn't work... I just needed some extra space for my data backups. Ah well! Couldn't pass it up! Merry Christmas everyone!

P.S. Mine says Model D540X-4K

Hi Guy,
Dpon't want to stretch this out...but I can only find a 20% off deal at FW....bring thew drive down to $104, free ship and no tax then I have the $30 off Rebate. final $74.
Where is the $30 off 100, will they price match Comp usa online....no OD in R.I. where I live.

Just got my 40 gig, 7200 rpm for 69.99. I Took the printout of the cart into a OD. Told them I didnt want to buy online but preferred to come in and showed them the printout of the online cart price. ($99 after the 30/100). They matched the $99 price and printed out the $30 MIR. Sweetttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first OD would not match the $99 price but the second one had no problem. In fact, the guy at the register said "oh, you got a coupon price" and rang it up. He had to override the price of 129 and I saw the "reason" code he used was "customer satisfaction".

Yes, I am satisfied

Well, I took the plunge and went for the 5400rpm 40 giger.

With the $30 off $100 coupon, it came out to $97 including tax ( i'm in nyc ) and I'm having them ship it to me -- shipping is free.

So with the mail in rebate its $57 -- not bad at all.

thanks for a great deal !

By the way, for people ordering on-line what are you sending in as a receipt ? The email receipt ? or having OD fax you a copy ?

cheers!

using AMEX Blue is a good idea, but no help if you use the coupon. They will see it as a discount and said it is the final price.
I am still waiting for 2-3 OD rebate and 1 overdue (sent 9/10, contact and no exact date). The other did not show up on site yet.
I am not going to jump on because the rebate take forever (possible over 3 months).
If it is sent to Walled Lake, MI (ie. expressgroup.com) which is in most case, i say stay away.

I posted this caution in the similar Office Depot thread for the 20 gig drive but it may be of interest here also. The rebate forms look identical and they go to the same rebate center.

=============================

Here's a caution on the rebate application for online orders:

I just called the rebate center (Express Group: 1-800-741-1365) listed on the $40 rebate form asking if my order confirmation email/invoice was sufficient as the "original Office Depot sales receipt" listed on the form. She told me that this would *not* be sufficient. This is different than I was told in an earlier call to the same rebate center!

So I called Office Depot directly (1-800-463-3768) and they faxed me a copy of the "Retail Order Acknowledgement" which he thought should be fine for the rebate.

While I think I'm all set right now, the contradictory information form the rebate center has me slightly concerned. So this might be a rebate to track carefully in case it gets declined.

I just opened it and the drive is D740X-6L. P/N MX6L040J2.

Bob:

Not to quibble/flame, but just want to make clear in my mind and maybe others. I ordered on the web, and received a slip of paper in the bottom of the 20GB OD box entitled "INVOICE." It's got shipping and billing address, along wtih customer info on top. In the middle, the Item Details lists the drive plus price. At the bottom, it sums up the charges, and shows where the order got charged to (credit card number etc). Is this remotely the same thing as what you're referring to as your "order confirmation email/invoice?"

Cheers,

Cran

No problem.

-->What you received in the box sounds perfectly fine to me.

The "order confirmation email/invoice" that I mentioned was the email confirmation that was sent to me after the order. I had called a CSR at the rebate center earlier a few days ago and I was told that this email would be fine for the rebate. I was not totally comfortable about that and I called again today. This time I was told that the email confirmation was not acceptable.

What you received in the box sounds perfectly fine to me. Some folks are not getting an invoice in the box. Since I had not received my drive yet I was trying to get all my paperwork prepared in the event that my drive also showed up without an invoice. The timeline on this rebate is pretty short!

Password,

Are the specs any different for those models? Mine is the D740X-6L also. I assume it is still an ATA100.

thanks,

I just got mine too. It's the D740X-6L / ball bearing / ATA133. Too bad they charge tax to Texas now.

Got it for $107.24 after 30 off 100, then sending in the 30 MIR tomorrow morning for a final price of $77.24

Also, I got the OEM from outpost.com for $89. I think this is a better deal, get it retail for cheaper, but MIR.

Anyhow, good luck to the rest of you guys.

Guys, ATA66 vs. ATA100 vs. ATA133 doesn't mean shiznit for this drive.

In fact, 5400 rpm drives won't even deliver peak sustained transfer rates to saturate ATA33 (33 MB/s).
Retail ATA66 (or higher) kits do come w/ slightly-better 80 conductor IDE cables though.
