If you're looking for the 7200 drive, you could also try pricematching with outpost.com (sorry no link, a little new at this). They've got the Maxtor D740X drive for $109. If you can use the pricematch, the $30 off $100 coupon, and the $30 rebate, that ends up being $49 ($109 - $30 coupon - $30 rebate) for a 40GB, 7200 RPM, UATA 133 hard drive. Is it just this deal, or is it getting hotter in here?

P.S. Haven't tried this yet (finals), but will let you guys know when I do. A couple of these would go nicely with my new KG7-raid motherboard, don't you think?

My first price match, I was so excited

I had already used the 30 off 100 so all I could find was a 20 off 75 and printed it out in my cart to go to B&M. There I pricematched with CC for 109 on the 5400RPM drive. Checked out at $96 and some change, will be $56 after $40 MIR.

Thanks for the hot deal

Welcmhm, how did you get down to $49 for that drive? OD does not carry that drive, so how would you pricematch? Also, that drive does not have a rebate. Did you miss something? Or am I? You cant use a rebate for that drive, the rebate drives are the 7200 ata66 or the 5400 ata66. The people who said they got that drive, bought the ata66 model and got it by mistake. I think thats where you got confused...

Whoa...Back the truck up!
I go to OD B&M today to pick up my 7.2k 40GB Maxtor hard drive today that I ordered online for in store pickup, and what do I find in the box?
A Quantum Fireball drive! There was a little piece of paper in the box that said that Quantum HDD had merged with Maxtor and the drive in the box meets Maxtor standards...so on and so forth blah blah.. It also said"The MaxDiag utility that came with this kit will not work properlly with Quantum HDD models."
This kinda pi**es me off, not that I would use the utility but it is pretty cheesy to substitute this drive when it will not work with provided software.

The drive is labeled:
40.0 GB AT Fireball Plus AS
Auantum part Number QMP40000AS-A
Interim Descriptor P/N JP-00C142-12541-16S201T:Q
GTLA: AS40A011-03-B 40.Dat

Should I go back and try to get a real Maxtor? Whats up with that?

I have 2 Quantum Fireballs in my home system and they work great!
But, if you're not satisfied, try to take it back to OD.
I don't know if they'll want you going through every box on the shelf though!!

Good point!
I also have a quantum at home that is 6 years old and has been reformatted and partitioned more times than I care to count.
The drive still performs flawlessly. I guess I am just cheesed because I didn't get the new D740X.
I know, I am still getting a 40GB 7.2k drive for about 70 dollars, so quit bitching right?

No - I can understand you being a little pissed!
It should be marked on the outside of the box with a label or something.
And the least they could have done was to put a Quantum drive diagnostic disk in the box.

What I find strange is, everyone is buying the 40gb ata66 drive and getting a bunch of different drives in the box. That is really odd.
I just went to OD today and got the 40gb 7200. The bastards wouldnt pricematch it to buy.com("They dont pricematch online stores") which has it for $110. Im gonna call them up right now and order online and see if I can get the pricematch there, then I will take the one I got in store back if they do it. *Grin*

Edit: Nope, no luck, they actually have their act together. : /

Edit:#2 Humm. Where is the UPC label on this box, Is it inside or something? I need it for my rebate!

I'm not sure about the situation right now, but at the time of the Fireball Plus AS's release, it was a better 40 GB HD than Maxtor's offering.

I doubt that has changed much, because drive manufacturers usually introduce newer technology in their larger capacity drives (mainly higher areal density each successive product refresh).

My desktop PC's main drive is the Fireball Plus AS, and I have no complaints.

The main difference is that now you have Quantum's solid product, with Maxtor's highly-regarded RMA process. Note I've never had to RMA any Maxtor HD, and none of us would want to. However, for those that do, Maxtor and IBM are known to be the best/fastest at it.

heh... yeah i got the 30gb 7200 rpm from od few weeks ago... i was kinda disappointed when i found a quantum fireball as drive inside. i also got the same note that the software woudn't be compatible. however, i didn't care cuz i never use those anyways. then i looked at the specs and compared the maxtor 7200 with the quantum 7200. the quantum is actually a little faster. but yeah, i think they might be a little bit louder too.

i really really want that ata133... i might drop by an od later and see what i can get.

Wow I just opened my maxtor box, and everyone was right. The ata66 40gb 7200 drive you thought you were getting is the ata133 7200 rpm drive. Thats sweet. I think they are all the ata133 drives, even they 5400 is the 5400 ata133 I bet instead of the ata66.

I don't think they make an ata133 5400 currently. Mine was deliviered today and is the newer D540X

Well, Ifinally got in on part of the pm action. No luck at B&M, little luck at od.com. They said they would pm to staples.com, but would remove the $30 OD coupon. I said I would have used a coupon at staples and csr said what coupon code--thought I could find a $30 staples coupon and would call back later. Best I could find was a $25 off $100 coupon, so I called back last night. The CSR confirmed the staples price and said my account couldn't be adjusted then, but to call back in the morning. Said that the info on the staple's would be noted with my record. I called this morning and the CSR said no note in file, ok how much staples price? no hassle credited my cc for the $10.01 difference. so $40 plus tax if I ever get the OD rebate.

Just to repeat myself, no IDE hard drive out there saturates the ATA66 bus. Someone claimed that ATA133 is better for RAID setups that are just coming out.

I'd venture to say that for 99 out of 100 of us, ATA66 vs. ATA100 vs. ATA133 has a negligible impact on disk performance. For the 5400 rpm drive, even ATA33 would be sufficient.

You are joking, right?!! The UPC label is that BIG label that takes up about the entire end of the box!
Just cut around the outside of the entire label, peel it off & send it in.

Damn, even Stevie Wonder can see that!!

Well I got to the Lakeland OD on route 98N.

....5400rpm drives sold out...I think the guy (manager perhaps?) saw the disappointment on my face....

<< Hey I can give you the 7200rpm for the same price the 5400 is supposed to be if you like? >>

Ears prick up immediately!

I explained about the offer etc and my 30 off 100 coupon - No Problem

So $119.99 (+$7.19 tax) -30.00 = $97.19

Then I was also given the $30 MIR form So final price of $67.19...not bad at all really

And yes it is also the D740X-6L

what do you mean??? obiviously ata133 is BIGGER than ata66 so it therefore must be better.....

Damn, I'm jealous since mine was MX6L040J2. Was your box any different? Mine said
STO154000U, ATA100. BTW, the S/N on the box does not match any numbers on the drive...

for those trying to figure 7200's, you might be able to tell production run by serial numbers --worth a try if any braggers or moaners feel like posting theirs for comparison
