"Good idea, oh Lord"

My ST0154000U has a serial # beginning with T4H8
My D740X-6L (yep...fluid bearing) has a serial # beginning with 6612

The ST0154000U sticker on the side of the box has a dashed horizontal line that says "clip here" right above where it says "Proof of Purchase". The D740X-6L box doesn't have the line nor the Proof of Purchase wording on the white sticker.

Thanks VH200, I found it though. I didnt realize it would be on a sticker, cause it is usally part of the box. I was like looking on every side of the box going "WTF!!" Then I looked at sticker and saw it going, thats odd....

UPDATE Just got back from OD (in L.A., Olympic and Barrington). Came back with a Maxtor D740X-6L. The manager pricematched to Outpost.com AND accepted the $30 off $100. So, I got the drive (40GB, 7200 RPM, UATA133, liquid dynamic ball bearing) for $88.79. When (if) I get my $30 rebate, this is an ULTRA HOT deal. Jump on it while you can.

Now I've just got to get another to go with my new KG7-Raid MB....

He pricematched it also? Hes not very smart then, they are not suppsosed to do that. The manager told me they could lose their job if they do. But you are lucky heh. Also, all the 40gb 7200 drives are the ata133.

Is it just my bad luck or does any one elses D740X make strange clicking noises under heavy load. Also during shut down, the spin down of the drive is extremely loud... my IBM 75GXP never had these problems. Just wanna know if this is normal. On a side note, anyone notice the green light on the bottom of the drive near the center screw that turns on when the drive is being accessed? Kinda cool I think.

You know thats really odd because usually maxtor drives never fail and its the IBM's that suck. 75GXP has gotta be the drive with most problems ever made by IBM hehe... Seriously, I know sooo many techs that have told me they get those in all the time. I had one also, and it broke. I sent it back and ibm fixed it, then I just sold it so I didnt have to deal with it. As for your maxtor. I would have to hear the noise it makes. It sounds like same problem my IBM drive had. It made strange noises booting up and would freeze and also would make them in heavy loads. I think that is the read head that messes up. Anyways, you have a 3 year warrenty on it, so dont fear. If it does break just send it in. That is not a good sign though. I would backup everything you put on it..

I know what you mean modempower, a buddy of mine had his IBM fail 2 months after he got it.... bad sectors everywhere. I am lucky though, had mine for a year now without problems. The concern has always been on my mind though so I jumped on the D740X deal. Sad to say, it is the Maxtor giving me problems instead of the IBM, though I am on a high-point ATA/66... you know what piece of sh*t those thing are. Maybe a conflict between the ATA/133 drive and ATA/66 controller?

Has anyone successfully called in an order to OD for price matching an online store like Outpost.com?

I just had an IBM 60gxp 7200rpm fail (corrupted FAT) . I got it from Newegg only about 4 months ago. Would Newegg provide an exchange after the first 30 days?

Is Norton Ghost a good tool for backup or is something better?

Even if they dont webley, all IBM drives have at least a 1 year warrenty from factory. That sucks, I am using a IBM 60gxp right now, have not heard too many of those fail yet. Mine has been working fine.

How can I get the rebate if I lost the receipt? I ordered it online, so I have the e-mail confirmation (though I don't think Maxtor would accept such evidence). Is there any way Office Depot can make a copy of their receipt for me? Has anyone ever tried this?

If you have a fax machine available, Office Depot will fax you a copy of the "order confirmation". That's what I had them do before I got my drive delivered. Just be aware that the person I talked to at the rebate center (Express Group) said that I should send both that *and* the invoice that came with my drive. (I think that's crazy but this is one rebate that I will track very closely.)

The D540X I got as far as the 5400rpm drive is ATA100 (Last I knew, maxtor does not make ATA133 5400 rpm drives). I've got it running on my older system with ATA33 (!!), and it will sustain nearly 10MB/sec reads and writes!!!! That's 3MB/sec faster than my IBM 7200 15GB does!! I believe the D540x is single platter tho, which I'm sure makes all the difference..that sucker is fast though. Average seek is just fine, runs about 8.8ms without the acoustical management on (pff, that acoustical management is pointless on the 5400 - I could barely hear it with it off and doing seek tests)

Anyway, either drive is a good buy, but I have found 5400 rpm drives to be more reliable in my experience, so I pretty much tend to stick with those. Plus, I really don't need the extra speed...I dont game very much and don't run anything HD access intensive.

Yer right they dont. I just figured since the D740X is a ata133, thought the 5400 rpm would be also. Then I saw its just ata100, which is odd, usually the same model line has same ata speeds. Also, about this deal. This is not really the much of a deal when you think about it. We all thought we were getting the STU00 model(ATA 66) for this price. Actually, when I looked up prices, the D740X is actually cheaper than the ATA66 model for some reason. They run about the price we got after the $30 off $100 coupon. So it is basically just the rebate that saves the money. Its still a decent deal, but the ATA66 drive should be cheaper than it is.

I ordered the 40gb drive,
& when I opened the box, it said 20gb on it.
It was too late to call OD, so I checked online
and the kit# matched the 40gb kit.
I opened it and the drive was a D740X-40gb,
so OD has some drives with the right kit#,
but the wrong capacity label on top (front).
