Odd 5900xt problem

Hey guys, im quite confused about this 5900 i have and im not sure exactly how to fix it.

I recently bought a gainward 5900xt 1100 golden sample blah blah card at newegg for 151 dollars excluding shipping. I got the card a few days later and proceeded to test it, and that is when the problems began.

It is having an odd intermittent problem that i cant quite figure out. It will run every game that my 8500 ran except that during the intros, (the 2 games i play, battlefield 1942 and dawn of war) it goes at about a half frame per second. The sound is completely normal, but the graphics litterally are a slide show. It took around 10 minutes for it just to load the ea "challenge everything" graphic on battlefield's startup, . Once it gets into the actual game, though, it runs great. I ran doom 3 demo to make sure if the cards' 3d might be shaddy, but it runs it absolutely fine.
It also acts odd in 3dmark 03. I'll start it up and it will go black and pause after i press the run benchmark button, which is normal. But instead of going black for a second or so and then moving on to the first test (the ww2 plane benchmark, cant honestly remember the name) loading screen, it will sit there black for about 10 seconds until it finally chugs onto the benchmark, which it runs fine once it gets around to it. But after the first benchmark, it takes a huge pause again, and after about 10 seconds goes onto the battle to proxycon (spelling?) loading screen, which it nevers runs. It sits for about 15 seconds with a black screen and then simply reboots.
Now normally if the card was acting like this i would simply send it back to newegg for a replacement. It is a refurb afterall so its understandable that it is probably a dud. But the messed up thing is that THIS IS the refurb, and the first one did the exact same thing ! wouldnt run 3dmark 03, would chug in game intros, etc. I remember putting artic silver 3 on my first 5900xt's gpu, and i checked to see if they just simply sent me the same card back, but nope, this one has the factory gunk on it, so i know it is a seperate one. Ive downloaded directx9 and it works correctly, so im at a complete loss for what is wrong.
Ive run the card without its molex connector in thinking that it might be my powersupply, but it still does the same thing. Ive also downclocked my duron from 2.1 ghz to 1200, and it still dosent work correctly, so im semi-ruling out the powersupply. Obviously either this batch of cards are all defective or, the more likely scenario, there is something interfering with my system. Help if you all can, cus im about to pull my hair out!:disgust:

update

I just got done running 3dmark 05, which for some reason it does run correctly, and i get a pathetically low 603 marks. I know my duron isnt helping this card out much, but thats just too low. Mind you it is overclocked to 450/822, and no, the overclock isnt causing all this ^^. It runs the same way no matter its clock, so im still at a loss for why it is doing this ? :Q Any help is appreciated , i understand if everyone else is as stumped as i am!

heh, i only did it to make sure it would actually run through, which it did :S. My overclocks put it right at 5900 ultra speeds, and im being beaten by 5700 ultras, something is obviously up, and i've no clue how to fix it . I wanted this card to replace my 8500, and then about a week later black friday came around, so i got a 6800 instead . I wanted to send the card back to get a refund, but newegg charged a 25% restocking fee, so i decided to get a replacement and hopefully sell it on ebay, since most seem to go for about 150 there. So yeah, im trying to figure this out so that i dont sell a dud off to some poor guy in oklahoma .

what kind of power supply are you using? Brand and wattage?

Reinstall the latest chipset drivers for your mobo. Run Driver Cleaner and then Reinstall the latest WHQL drivers from nvidias web site (not FTP site).

thanks for the responses, and to anwser your question dave, its a crap pos allied 400 watt power supply. That thing is what i think is most likely the culprite, but ive downclocked the card as well as my cpu, and it dosent seem to make any sort of a difference.I figure it should, since if they are both downclocked the power demands should be greatly reduced and the power supply shouldnt be as stressed. The main reason that i dont think its the power supply, though, is that my pny 6800 runs fine in the system, which should have higher power requirements then the 5900xt.

And to keysplayr, ill go and do that, hopefully it will help, ill report back after ive finished reinstalling, etc.

RESOLVED

ok, got done reinstalling the drivers, which i figured wouldnt work, since my last 5900 i completely reinstalled windows for and it still did the same thing. After i restarted, it continued the same thing, so i went for the nforce2 drivers. I had never updated or installed any other drivers then what came with the motherboard when i got it, (and 8rda rev 1.1 i think? getting replaced soon, thats for sure ) and ill be dammed if the new drivers didnt fix absolutely everything! I was amazed that the drivers were what was causing all this trouble, but they were. Everything seems a little bit faster now as well, and my 05' score has gone from 603 to 1155, almost doubling and up to where it should be for a 5900. So, moral of the story, UPDATE YOUR CHIPSET DRIVERS! I never thought they would really cause any sort of instability, but apparantly I was wrong, and id venture to guess that most people dont think about it either. So if you have something wrong with your computer and you cant seem to figure it out, remember to atleast update those drivers!
