We have a piece of hardware running on a windows computer that sends data to another computer running windows. Both are set to static IP addresses and connected directly together. If we let the source computer run overnight eventually the destination computer stops receiving data. Pinging the source computer returns 'destination unreachable'

The network utilization on the source computer is 100% but windows reports 0 bytes being transferred in the Activity screen. The software itself tracks packet transmission and reports packets being sent. Wireshark reports 0 activity on the adapter.

I am guessing the software is somehow locking up the network card as, once this happens, I am unable to exit the software or modify the settings on the network card although I can navigate the screens just fine

Any thoughts on what might be causing the problem?

I would start with updating the network card drivers (or back rev if you are on the newest.) I would then replace the network card(s).

Hmm... I'll second the idea that it sounds like a problem with the network driver, possibly a memory leak, or something similar.
