MD, You really see aircooled Beetles? It's a notable event for me. A Karmann Ghia might be enough for me to make a thread here. It's been a few years since I've seen one of those.

now you didn't say that did you? You said VW beetles.

Soda machines that worked like coin operated fridges. You put in your coin, and that caused wired shackles to loosen from the neck of a bottle, and you opened the fridge door to retrieve it.

We used to have one just like that. It was $0.10 and held 7 oz bottles. If you were good you could grab 2 at once and yank for a free soda.

I remember when bottles all needed openers (no twist) and cans had pull tops that did not stay attached to the can.

Candy cigarettes. We thought we were so cool and grown up.

Spending all day outside, running all over town. Other parents would call ours if we were doing anything remotely risky, but we weren't supervised 24/7. Unless we didn't show up for supper (and we always did), no one worried about what we were doing.

Going with my Dad to the 7 11 to check the TV tubes on the tube tester, going through the thick book for the appropriate knob settings on the tester and then running the tube through it. If the tube failed you would get a new one from the bottom section of the unit.

How is any of this different from the odd things of today?
And candy cigarettes are still sold today, at least as of a few months ago when i last saw them at the store. Tons of retro products being remade/re imagined as well.
Of course kids of today will one day look back and think how cool the 00's were. The only thing special about the past is growing up in whatever era you grew up in.

Garbage Pail Kids. for whatever reason I was hooked on those cards.

You might enjoy this then.

also this: http://www.************/p/16544109/garbage-pail-kids-sticker-album-1985-1986-in?gps=1

It even comes with a pack of cards, talks about the entire history and full size pics of various cards, it's a nice nostalgia book.

Also some high end minimalist trail/running shoes have all Velcro or Velcro with laces for a super snug fit.

Strangely I remember how prevalent smoking used to be in pretty much every restaurant and how now that everything is smoke free, how clean the restaurants now are.

I remember thinking how cool it was to watch the night raids by F-117s in the first Gulf War not realizing how deadly and destructive those things were. I just thought it was so awesome at the time.

i got a pair as a kid (maybe 6yo?) they fell out of fashion pretty quick. didnt encounter them again until college on crew. all the footboards in the racing shells had them bolted on.

It was always weird that mom/dad showed up out of nowhere when things were getting fun. I never thought of other parents calling them.

Being a kid was pretty odd all around.

l-o-a-d-space-shift-2-star-shift-2-comma-eight-comma-1

I remember being very, very familiar with what, at the time, felt like arcane rituals for getting certain things to work (cassette tapes, record players, 5.25" floppy disks, etc.) that I feel like I would be completely stumped by if I saw one today. But I could also be remembering it as being harder than it actually was.

Yep, you couldn't go anywhere without having to suck other people's smoke. The malls had fern filled smoking pits.

Every so often I have dream where a dial phone factors. The dream involves me having to dial and not being able to get the thing to work for various reasons of user ineptitude. Kind of weird as my parents refused to get a touch tone phone until I was out of college as the phone company used to have a surcharge for touch tone service so I grew up with dial phones.

Yep. And we went to the Ma Bell store to get a phone, the only place you could get it.

more things I remember:

Pepperidge Farms frozen cakes.

being able to go places without worrying about some child predator molesting you.

Rotary phones - I still have one in a box.

Disco. not that it mattered to me but it was everywhere when I was a kid.
