So I have a Asus router flashed to tomato. My main computer is physically wired to it. I have a laptop that connects wirelessly. Now whenever the laptop does big file transfers anywhere across the network, my computer gets laggy. When its not, everything works fine. Internet connection sharing isnt on, so I dont know what else. Ive tried the 2 onboard NICs and dropped in a PCI one too. If it helps, Im running vista. It doesnt happen on a different Ubuntu box, and the laptop doesnt have the same issue either.

Im at a loss. Any ideas?

Welcome to AnandTech Forums.

For local transfer the only part of the Asus that work is the switch (Not the Routing).

You say: "Now", did it work fast doing the same thing before Flashing, or with other switch, or while configured differently?

What to do mean by Internet sharing is Not On?

To be fair, I bought the router with the intention of flashing it, so I never ran the stock firmware. The "now" was just an expression. Its always been this way. The sharing bit was referring to ICS. Fwiw, it doesn't matter what port I have it pugged into.

Well, Wireless transfer of of Big Files is always a "sticky" issue.

Wireless is slow, as well as Laptops Hard Drives.

What do you mean by laggy?
If you mean you start to see file transfers slow down when both boxes are pulling from the nas, then its just the nas. If you mean your internet gets slow then thats different.

Consider my network.

Wired devices are a NAS, Vista machine, Ubuntu machine, Wired Printer.
Wireless devices are laptop, and Tivo.

When I say laggy, the computer itself, not the network connection is laggy. Think of how a computer responds when its swapping memory. It's a lot like that. My testing so has been this:

3 GB worth of files is my test.

NAS to Ubuntu machine = Good
NAS to Vista = Good
Vista to Laptop = Good
Vista to Ubuntu = Good
Laptop to NAS = Slow Vista
Laptop to Tivo = Slow Vista
Laptop to Ubuntu = Slow Vista

I think that covers my bases.
