Unless you're hitting places like Virginia, I think you're fine.

Drive 4 MPH over instead.

1) You'll never notice the difference in driving time (a few minutes a day).

2) Your chances of being pulled over plummet dramatically when compared to 5 MPH. Some locations even forbid their cops for pulling people over for such minor infractions. It clogs the courts with cases the cops can't win.

3) If you did happen to get pulled over, you will likely win in court since the equipment (your spedometer and their radar gun) are only accurate within 5 MPH. You can argue successfully that you thought you were going the speed limit if you were clocked at 4 MPH over.

4) You'll save gas and thus money. Not much, but it'll be barely noticible.

5) In the rare case of an accident or near accident, this MAY save you. Probably not, I'm really stretching it here.

I got tagged doing 10 over the limit in PA the last time I did a cross country road trip... But that was my second time making that trip.

Sooo... I'd estimate 25%.

Yeah, as long as you are not driving more than 5mph over the speed limit, your car is running fine, you aren't driving erratically, and you aren't doing blow while drinking beer with a 12 year old male prostitute...you should be fine.

How about a 12 year old female prostitute?

I drove from Washington D.C to Seattle with a loaded car, tinted windows, two surfboards on top, and a temp tag that blew off.

I had temp tags on the car and since my windows were tinted, i had to have the tag on the outside of the car. I went through a snowstorm in PA and it blew off. I had to get cardboard and wrote lost tags for my entire trip from PA to Seattle. I did no get pulled over the whole way, even though I sped most of it.

Damn that was a fun trip.

I have limited experience, and personal experience isn't a scientific study. But, yes, 25% is about right looking at all the cross country trips from myself, my parents, my friends, and my relatives.

solid interstate? almost zero. if you're hitting small towns, a bunch of variables come into play though.

I've driven from FL to NY doing an avg of 75 mph and didn't get pulled over once. In your case, you most likely will not get pulled over.

Done it three times, including one direction with a temp tag that was only valid in my destination state. Never pulled over.

If you're not driving like a dumbshit your odds of getting pulled over are very slim.

There are certain situations where you're more likely to be pulled over. Texas cars (and trucks) are statistically more likely to be pulled over on the I-35 and I-75 when out of state because law enforcement is aware of the primacy of the drug trade using Texas as a jumping-off point.

Bad tags : NY, Texas, Florida, Cali

Good tags : Ohio, Kansas, Nebraska, Dakotas, etc.

You probably wouldn't get pulled over for 5 over, but in my experience I'm more likely to get pulled over in other states. I've only ever gotten one moving violation in NJ, and I REALLY deserved that ticket. I've gotten more tickets and have been pulled over more times in other states. And in other states I get pulled over for things that you don't normally get pulled over for unless there are additional factors, e.g. 72 in 65, rolling stop at stop sign.

0% chance getting pulled over for 5MPH over. Isn't the first 5MPH guaranteed in the constitution or something for chistsakes?

That's one car pulled over per about 12,000 miles of driving. We average well over 12,000 miles of driving a year on our vehicles. I've never been pulled over out of state. And, I almost always go at least 5mph over. (Never more than 9 over though.)

If your top speed is 5MPH over, I'd say the odds of getting pulled over is 0.01%.

I drove from Philly to Seattle in March. 2007 gray Mazda 6, PA plates, current. Consistently sped, between 10-25 mph over.

Was pulled over once - well, the girl I drove with was driving, and she was stupid and not paying attention. She got hit with 92 in a 75 in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota...apparently, out there, 17 over is only a $90 fine!
