Thoroughbred? I'm holding out for Hammer.

(Those look like pretty decent prices...hell, it was a little over a year ago that I bought a 1.0-GHz T-Bird from TCWO, and that was $184 at the time. Double the speed for a lower price is hard to beat...don't think the Biostar M7MIA supports it, though.)

My next upgrade will probably be a Hammer also. But it sure is hard to resist upgrading the Kids' and Wife's machines right now with prices this low.

Thoroughbred may not be out until late June. See:
[/b]Link[/b]

Then you have to wait a few more weeks for prices to drop out of stratosphere. Can you wait that long? I don't know how long I can stand to keep my old Duron.

Yes, Holding Out For A Couple Of Months Will Be Worth It. Prices Will Drop Once The New Chips That Are Due Out In The Middle Of June. Right Now College Has Taken All My Money Away, So Summer Is The Best Time To Upgrade.

Why is it that the price gap from the 1900 to the 2000 and then the 2000 to the 2001 are so much higher than the rest of the price differences. Is it just marketing? There can't be that much of a difference between the performance, could there?

Yes, it's called the law of supply and demand and exploiting every market niche! There are people (many people, in fact many at AT) that will purchase at this price to have the latest and greatest!

why would you wait for hammer?

that is a rather foolish move... anyway TCWO is a good vendor, they are local to me, so i get web prices + no shipping + i am a reseller so no tax!

It's marketing and supply+demand. The 1500/1600 XP's are as much or more than the 1700 model at many places. OEM to OEM or Retail to Retail. They actually charge MORE for the 1600 at a few vendors. In the past, I've seen that when a particular model has a higher OverClockability and, as such, folks will prefer that model over a higher speed part because they can OC the lower model more than the higher model.

An example of this would be the original 300a Celeron versus the 333+ parts. The 300a could overclock to 450MHz, the 333+ couldn't go @ 100MHz FSB to 500 (at least not as reliably). This was also true for the 533a or 566 Celerons OC'ing to 800/850 using the 100FSB. The 600/633/666/700 parts couldn't easilly get to the 100MHz FSB so they were in lower demand and as such the prices stayed higher for the lower speed (533/566) parts.

Now, the question is does the 1600XP overclock better than the 1700/1800/1900 models?

Those are some good prices, I have a 1.33 athlon, so I think I wait until I can at least double my speed before I upgrade.

yeah... the price/speed ratio is pretty small from a 1600mhz XP and a new tbred. not worth the cost. this is the longest i have ever kept one processor (two months). i am ashamed

I've bought from TCWO several times...love their shipping policy. Can't beat $6.95 to ship a monitor coast to coast.

Well, the fact that TCWO includes some LifeSavers in every CPU I have purchased from them, and sent me a new 1800+ via second day air shipping when I had to RMA a DOA chip (I had not bought the heatsink, and was working with the 15 day warranty).

They are top-notch in my book, and you'll notice that Newegg is copying their prices. While I don't advocate buying entire systems from TCWO as prices on other items are higher, that flat shipping can save you a LOT in the long run.

Newegg, TCWO, and Mwave. The three places that get more of my money than I care to admit.

Heck yea. But if intel lowers prices I just might build some P4 systems and try and sell those.
