i have GOT to get a new computer soon but 'it still works' (."),,,|, so i gotta kill it somehow, I was thinking of OC'ing the graphics chip on the mobo and play CS untill it pops but i cant find out how. Its just a ATI Rage Ultra or something integrated on the board. Got any ideas of how that arent obvious? he he

Ahh oh well I dont know what im gonna do, I dont really want to make this computer completely dead in the water though. If it isnt obvious im not the one in control of the money to buy stuff for a new one.

I don't get it, I bought 5 OEM Duron 1.1GHz CPUs last week for $39 each. Now I browsed to them and they're $64 each! All the XP's came down in price and the Durons went up?? That don't make no sense...

I have never seen them that low. You must be confused. If I am wrong were did you buy them at that price. BTW, you also have the wrong link for the Durons at tcwo.com. Here it is. they are only $53

I wonder if it was a pricing error? I only said that because I built two of those machines last week and would have loved to had that price. As far as the pricewatch.com prices go, you need to link to tcwo.com via pricewatch to see that price.

Looks like we got a price war brewing!

Around 1am last night Accubyte lowered their Pricewatch prices across the entire XP line. Now Accubyte's prices are about $4 to $6 lower than TCWO's. However, when you factor in shipping, you're still better off at TCWO.

My hope is TCWO will match Accubyte's prices!

Great company. Bought my last 2 cpu upgrades from them for my 8k7a. I bought the 1700+ when it was at $103. Running great at 1672(2000+) w/152 fsb

must have been a pricing error

Maybe...

See this thread
here

TCWO had cheap, cheap Duron prices for a couple of hours on Monday (maybe April Fools?!).

So exactly how many Mhz does the XP2100+ function at? I hate the new naming scheme.

I may just order one of the 2100+ on my Amex blue before the BVG expires 5/1. I will hope like hell that the price plummets over the next 60 days!

Another question.....I have an Epox 8kha+ with XP1600+ running WIN XP Pro, if I swap 1600 for 2100 will WinXP freeze? Will I have to reinstall OS? Or call Microsoft? Have never just swapped chips before.

Woohoo--maybe the price drop means the next AMD CPU is about to be released! (Palomino 2200+, or Thoroughbred? Can't wait!!)

And as for you, ChrisJor, why do you think WinXP will "freeze?" Swapping the CPU should not cause that.

The wait for Thoroughbred as opposed to Hammer has several things going for it:

Hammer=64bit server chip(@least at first), which means proprietory software, different drivers, messed up compatibility, etc. Also, it is supposed to be a server chip, so I doubt they will have new consumer-level features like 3DNow! started out as.

Time: The first Thoroughbreds go retail somewhere between May 20 and mid June. Anand has a report on Hammers about how they raised their first prototype in only a 1 month period before cebit, so the devteam isn't sitting on their asses, but it will still be a very long wait and a very hazy time period before Hammers are released.

Price: Hammers are likely to be far beyond what is available now, price-wise. Thoroughbreds are showing all indications, however, of being a low-heat output, very-high-scalability chip(based on the heat/frequency performance that Northwood got by getting to .13micron). For all those not listening, that means VERY HIGH OVERCLOCKABILITY! Northwoods have gotten to 3Ghz on air-cooling, and are likely to go to @least 3.5(based on marketting predictions) if quality goes up.

Compatibility: Hammer will require a new motheboard spec, and probably be incompatible with much of the software on your machine now(think 32bit PCI slots vs 64bit). Thoroughbred has been confirmed to work in standard socket-A motherboards, and will work with existing kt266 motherboards.

Overclockability:Thoroughbred will probably be one of the most overclockable chips in recent memory, as it is .13micron vs .18. Although what AMD will do about OCers remains unknown(They seem to want to alienate their hobbyist customer base by making it harder and harder to OC the chip. First came pencil trick, then came XP's filling in the valleys and connecting the bridges, then came the green PCB XP's that require even more modification. Wonder what they will do w/ thoroughbred?), Hopefully they will try to keep their hardware enthusiest audience for now.

Some of the things I have said about Thoroughbreds will also probably apply to the Hammers, but it is unsure at this point because of how far off the Hammers are. Personally, I am waiting for a Soltek(mmm, red storm feature) KT400 Raid(dubious at best) motherboards to run my new Thoroughbred on with OCZ PC3200 memory.

With the CLAW still so far away, what I'll do is to wait for T'Bred to come out this summer, then pick up a Palomino 1800+ at dirt cheap price (less than $70?) for my KT133A system. When CLAW finally is released and becomes affordable, maybe in late-2003 (?), then it will be time for a completely new setup for me anyway.

I try to keep my core hardware for at least 2 years
