Updated prices. They are offering special pricewatch prices on some of the cpu's again. $74 for a 1600+ is amazing . Looks like phone orders only right now.

As of Friday, May 10 TWCO Pricewatch prices for Morgan core Durons:
1 GHz: $34
1.1 GHz: $41
1.2 GHz: $47
1.3 GHz: $62
Changed XP Pricewatch price from the first comment in the thread:
Athlon XP 1700+: $79 (-$1)

All prices display the green arrow on Pricewatch, indicating a recent price drop.
The 1.2 GHz looks like the sweet spot for me at the moment for upgrading older systems.
SiSoft Sandra 2002 scores for Dhrystone-Whetstone-Integer-Floating Point
Duron 1.2: 3348-1674-6640-7714
XP1600+: 3872-1849-7644-8913
XP1800+: 4240-2124-8370-9760
P4 2 GHz: 3688-?-7875-9625
This is a great upgrade chip for early Socket A motherboards. I am currently typing on an Asus A7V with one of these CPUs (the board is almost 2 years old & has had 3 other CPUs; the old processors all have good homes, though, on cheap systems I built for other people).
Almost any KT133 should handle this CPU, at least with a BIOS flash.

I ordered the 1GHz Duron for $34 on Wednesday, along with a $9 HSF to get the 1 year warranty. UPS delivered it here to SE Virginia today, about 46 hours after calling in the order.

I could really learn to LIKE service like that!

With INTEL dropping in the new Celeron 1.7 does anyone think I should put off My chip order of 2 XP 1700's this week?

A few quick questions.

First, what stepping have you guys been getting from the XP 1600-1800 range purchases? Any AROIAs? I'd like to get one of that stepping if I can find it.

Second, does the heatsink/fan buy also include free shipping? I'm debating about taking my chances with the 15 day warranty and getting a better and cheaper CPU fan combo than what they offer.

they lower the online price at TCWO.com, too. Now the prices of oem amd xp are equal or less than pricewatch! Good for people like me only like to place order on line.
xp1700+ $80 , pricewatch $81
xp2000+ $137, pricewatch $141
others are the same as pricecwatch

Anything up to 150 pounds is free shipping. As for the fan, you can "take your chances", but after 15 days, you're screwed. There's a common misconception with TCWO. You don't HAVE TO buy the $16 Coolermaster for a year warranty. Buy ANY heatsink from TCWO with that CPU and you get a year warranty. I personally like the Coolermaster Copper HCC-002.

Well, I didn't have that misconception. I was thinking about getting the Volcano 7, which seems to be the cheapest of the kinda-competitively-priced heatsinks they offer... but that wouldn't have made sense if they tacked on $5 shipping or whatever. Thanks for the clarification.

The 1700+ cost $77 at this site, with free shipping. Anyone know if this is a reliable company?

Not trying to be picky about $1 difference, but for people who live in Florida, there's tax at TCWO.

I don't see them on Reseller Ratings. I'd rather stick with TCWO. You'll pay tax at 3B Tech Computers also if you live in IN.

Just to answer your question, I bought a xp1800+ from them last friday for $86 and got it today. Here's what's on the top of the core:

AX1800DMT3C
AGKGA 0149RPRW
Y7234540854

Judging from what I see, I would say I got a AGKGA-Y stepping that's 2001 week 49 (that's like early December first week probably?). I'm still waiting for my thermal paste to come in but I was a little disappointed at the stepping. Is it true that processors of this stepping sucks at oc'ing?

I've put off upgrading from my old arse 400 celeron for too long. It's a bit off topic but hust a quick question, I just need to apply a thin layer of thermal paste on core and bottom base of the heatsink and mount them together right? This is my first try at putting together a system using an amd processor. Using a AX-7 heatsink with setup.

Oh and TCWO was nice enough to include a roll of Lifesavers in the package too! LOL

Thanx

If you check over at CPU Database, you'll see that your CPU is pretty popular on the list of potential overclockered CPUs. I don't think it's the best one out there, but if you overclock it into the 1800MHz range, you'll probably need some better cooling than just air so it might be a more "affordable" solution if you got one that didn't overclock that high.

Got a XP 1800+ here about 2 weeks ago. It was $88 then, and I also paid $6.95 for Fed Ex Super Saver. Ordered on a Wed nite and arrived 2 days later on Fri (FL to MD). Good company to deal with. Only problem is they have a short warranty on OEM if you don't buy a hsf at the same time.

Can you tell us what stepping you got? Is it the same stepping as mine?

Thanx

I was looking at the TCWO site and I have a question.

I was wondering , if you buy a mobo/cpu combo from thompsons, like the XP 1800+ with the 7VRX, is the cpu attached to the motherboard for you or do you have to do it yourself? I like to buy combos where the cpu is already installed. Thanks for any help.
