Duron 950 eh? Motherboard old too?
If so, your motherboard may not take the new core the 1600 uses... but good luck

I have a 1.8 Ghz Duron in my son's system, and its pretty quick little cpu. The trouble with upgrading an older system is that often the bottleneck is the hard drive rather than the cpu. I didn't see the full potential of the Duron until I recently put in an 80 GB hard drive into the system. btw- mine was able to overclock to 2.0 Ghz...

Also the 1600 is almost definately a 133Mhz FSB CPU, you may have trouble running it if your board only supports 100Mhz FSBs.

This isn't a standard Duron, it only has 64K of L2. This CPU was originally made to be sold to poorer countries. I've had a few though and can say that they overclock VERY nicely and because of the lesser cache, they tend to stay pretty cool too!

Well, let's see.

Does it support 133Mhz FSB? Yep!
Does it support a 12x multiplier? Yep!

You're good to go!

(Only problem is that the CPU might appear as unsupported. In which case you will have to manually set the FSB, multiplier and voltage. But otherwise it will work fine.)

Ok, thanks. I've been out of the CPU arena for a while. I built a computer for my sister in the summer of 2001 (IIRC) with a Duron 800Mhz on an Iwill KK266. I think this could be a good upgrade until she probably buys a new computer next year.
