Saw this at buyextreme while looking at cases. --> 9500 Pro OEM

Its $164.00 plus $3.00 to $5.75 for shipping.

It has 3 year warranty, so its not the Sapphire one.

The resellarrattings are mix on this company. I've ordered three cases from them without any problems. There is thread from numerous people who also have ordered cases from them also.

Non-9700 hackable

Yea I know Newegg has the new Saphirre cards which looks like you can't do the hack on them. However I did see some Shapirre 128MB 9500 (black pcb too) cards over at livewarehouse which (if the pic is accurate) looks hackable.

you dont need to hack a 9700 non-Pro ... all you need is to overclock.
The hacks are for 9500s only.

Check out this linky, which does explain what I am talking about in a little detail. xbit labs has another article about the hackable/non hackable cards but I can't find it atm.

Basically nobody has messed with the ATI refreance designs so they are really obvious to what they look like. If the newegg pic is accurate (with the 4x memory chips along the topside of the cards), then it is based upon the 9500 Pro PCB/refreance deisgn (3rd set of card pics on the link) which only has a 128bit memory bus, and the 9700 hack involves "openning" up the full 256bit bus that the 9700/Pro cards have (top 2 sets of card pics), you notice the memory placement is along the top/side of the card. Basically the saphirre cards that are hackable use the better PCB and just disable those pipelines and the hack overrides that.

I was looking at the retail version @ $188. Anyone know off hand what is in the retail box that is not in the OEM version? ie games and other software, or other differences? Anyone care to recommend one or the other? Thanks.

addendum: TigerDirect email lists a VisonTek Titanium GeForce4 128mb for $199. Any thoughts on this card?

I saw that ATI was forcing Sapphire to recall all the "hackable" cards. There is non hackable version to replace it.

Are there hackable ATI cards? I've seen the 9500 Pro with red PCB and the memory in the side/top position. Also where is the hack info? I searched google breifly, but could find anything.

[This is in reference for ai42's post]

First of all, the pictured card is a 9000, not a 9500.
Second, the pro version has the newer, cheaper PCB. The non-pro version for some reason uses the older but more expensive PCB design.

So we don't know what this company is selling. It states a 9500, but shows a pict of a 9000.

Buyer beware!

[edit]

Oops! I clicked on the other link (just slightly above this).

The pictured card (in first post) is a Pro version. You want to buy a NON-PRO version if ya want to hack!

Ok, so can someone answer if the new shipment that's at newegg right now (with a black PCB) is hackable or not?

Black PCBs are the non hackable 9500's.
But, a 9500 Pro already has 8 pipelines active, so you just need to overclock it for performance.
As previously mentioned above...
Good Luck

you could do a price match with best buy if you have the right kind of amex card. BB has the ATI-built 9500 pro for $200 after rebate. Though i'M not sure if Amex will give you the difference since the advertised model (see first post) is OEM and the one at BB B&M obviously isn't.

Strange.. from their website:

"RADEON?E9500 PRO requires connection to your PC's internal power supply for operation. A 300-Watt power supply or greater is recommended to ensure normal system operation where a number of other internal devices are installed. "

Am I the only person that has never seen a vid card that needs to be powered separately?

I want to get this, but the fact that people are noticing that the picture is actually of a 9000 plus buyxtremegear's horrible rratings are kind of turning me off

The picture is correct, they looked at the wrong one.
The power supply thing is normal now.
And, I think it may better because it takes straight from the PS and doesnt run through MoBo bus...

I don't know anything about this store though...

What's the point in hacking something with half the memory bus or speed or whatever?

well, the 9500 non-pro cards are currently selling for ~$150. The 9700 pro is currently selling for ~$300. If you could turn a 9500 non-pro into a 9700 pro, wouldn't you?

This is what I did:

http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=&pid=6538&sid=EC9TQE9X3A3N9GMCDHL7C7UC0URE8SB0

Confirmed red board (hackable) Sapphire Atlantis 128mb AGP 8X for $168 shipped free. Hot?

Here's some additional info taken from the software mod page FAQ:

1. If you get a Radeon 9500 non-Pro 64MB, the hack will make it a 9500 Pro 64MB.

2. If you get a Radeon 9500 non-Pro 128MB with the new black PCB, the hack will make it a Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB.

3. If you get a Radeon 9500 non-Pro 128MB with the old red PCB (the one I linked to), the hack will make it a Radeon 9700!

Thus IMO you should either buy the red pcb (and buy fast since manufacturing of those has been stopped) or if you're going to get a black pcb card, then might as well get a non-Pro version (much cheaper) and hack it to a Pro.
