Just got this drive....looks like even with Windows 7 that more software will be needed for me to watch my movie collection on my pc. Can someone point me in the right direction for a decent software to use?
There are several commercial programs you can try (PowerDVD, WinDVD, Nero etc.) that are not inexpensive should you choose to buy once you've tried. I'm surprised the drive did not come with some software; usually white box, OEM drives come with a disc with something you can use to view with. At any rate, just about any of those previously mentioned are going to cost you more than the drive probably did.
When I got a blu-ray drive for my computer I ended up using PowerDVD. For me the playback of movies is fine.. its the crap I don't want but is installed anyway that I don't like.
This may have changed but last year when I was looking into this. There are no codecs in Windows (as an example) that allow you to play blu-rays because... Sony charges a fee for their use. As opposed to DVD's which you can play through media player if you wanted to.
It is likely the fee Sony charges that makes blu-ray playback software as expensive as it is.
Oh and pretty much for the price of decent bluray playback software... you could buy a cheap "stand alone" bluray player. *edited for clarity*

It's even more complex than that. The DRM requirements for Blu-Ray effectively require that periodic updates are issued to support new DRM methods (BD+, etc), and there needs to be a functional key revocation system. This on top of the costs makes it very difficult for Microsoft to bundle Blu-Ray support.
