OEM P4's any good?

im wondering if i should buy a p4 2.26 s spec SL6D6???? do OEM P4's OC good? im hoping this CPU will OC like retail ones....thx for any help.

Dont want to start another thread so hope u dont mind if i as a related question here:

Are the HS and Fan that come with P4 any good for OCing or would we need to purchase a new HS and Fan combo (i am looking to buy a 2Gig P4)

Also how would one ensure that one gets a later production P4 if buying from an online store?

the p4 HSF are decent, but i noticed a 10C degrees drop when i added my alpha pal 8942. the intel HSF will be fine if u dont OC. if u do OC, the intel HSF is fine for small OCing. If u plan do try and get the most OC from ur chip then u will need a better HSF. to get a newer stepping u would have to buy from good sites like http://www.newegg.com or go to computer shows and examine the stepping and FPO/Batch# urself...

I have a 2.0a running at 2.640 GHz using a retail Intel HS/Fan...absolutely no problems with temp. Under load I'm running about 48°C which is FAR below the Intel specs for max temp.

I can tell you this, you will have to get lucky to find a good 2.0a to OC. I've had three of them and only two OC well (same stepping), the third one (diff stepping) would only do 115 fsb before it crapped out.

I would stick with retail version because it's only a few bucks more and you get a 3 year warr and a cooler.

i already have a HSF but i can get the OEM P4 for cheap....i just dunno if intel produces cheaper/lesser quality OEM CPU's than retail ones....

OEM and Retail cpu's are exactly the same (with the obvious exception of the warranty and hs/fan.)

Yes, the are the same but the warr is 30 days versus 3 years. There are differences between the Intel P4 coolers though. The coolers they are including with higher clocked cpu's are generally larger with bigger fans.

Wingznut PEZ- I wish you guys (Intel) would open up a little shop there and sell cpu's directly. Maybe some coffee too.

eh, i dont think thats true. i have my 1.6 running @ 2.5 with the retail hs/fan. almost 1 ghz with that is more than small ocing in my opinion.

hmmm u didnt list ur CPU temp....ur probably around 50's??? well my p4 1.8@ 2.4 is running at a cool 33 idle and 40C max load. and im talking about more than 6 hours of prime it will not go over 40C...i also have nice airflow through my case though....

Right now, idle, my cpu is 30c and my mb is 24c. Its a little cool in this room right now though (about 68). Usually its 32/26. Under load it gets up to around 45-47c.

P4s are safe up to very high temperatures. Though yours does run cooler, that doesnt mean its performance is any better because of that. The stock fan is very quiet, and I prefer the sound level to be lower than saving a few degrees which does nothing to boost performance.
