Who's had NA beer? I've tried a lot of NA beer. O'Douls Amber and St. Pauli Girl are the best, IMO. You?

There are some times when I'm craving beer but can't have the real thing. I'm of the opinion that something's better than nothing.

What time would that be? Unless you're some kind of drunk you should be able to have a single beer and pretty much function without issue.

It's ATOT, don't ask for advice for anything unless your willing to have your opinion shredded, pissed on, and thrown in the wind.

Buckler was the only one I would drink in the NA class. Now my thinking is, If I am going to ingest the carbs. I want the alcohol to go with it.

:hmm: Got several posts in thinking OP meant North American beer and yet it still all made sense...

Indeed. ^_^

There's a reason why non-alcoholic beer tastes so bad. I had seen a video on it but I can't find it now. IIRC, it has to do with reheating. NA beers dealcoholed trough reverse osmosis supposedly are better.

Non-alcohol is made in the same style as other low-gravity beer (minimal grain amount), which is then heated to the alcohol burn-off point of 160-170F after fermentation.

Since there's not a lot of hop use in the beers, and they're made with grain adjuncts such as rice, corn and other grain "fillers," the flavor is considerably lacking. I recommend you find a "session" ale.

Bitburger Drive isn't as bad but given the choice between N/A beer and water I choose water.

Devils advocate for OP. Two situations I came up with where he may not want any alcohol. Taking meds or depending on the laws where he is, carrying a firearm.

I haven't had any since I was a kid, and they were uniformly bad.

Any of you had "malt beverages" from other countries, and are they any good? I haven't looked closely, but they don't seem to be advertised as beer per se. It looks like a drink option for people that don't want something sweet. I guess I should just get some next time I see it, but I'd rather not get a six pack of something that sucks.

Ah yes, I found what I was talking about. Was an article, not a video.

Basically, the reheating process to boil off the alcohol destroys the hops' delicate flavour and aroma.

The other way to do it is reverse osmosis. Same way dealcoholized wine is made. The beer forced through a fine filter leaving beery syrup on one side and alcohol-water mix on the other. The water is then boiled to remove most of the alcohol, then it's and mixed back with the beer syrup. This allows the beer to retain most of its flavour. However, the end product is flat. So CO2 has to be added. A by-product of this is carbonic acid, which can give NA beer a metallic taste.
