SPRINGBORO ? ? Michelle Incanno was an admitted Starbucks addict.

She'd buy the company's coffee beans every week. Whenever she'd get the chance to drop by a Starbucks, she would, placing the same order every time: a large, house brewed coffee with nonfat milk and two Splenda. When the Seattle-based chain opened a drive-through near her Springboro home, she was in java heaven.

Michelle Incanno of Springboro displays the Starbucks cup that offended her. The cup bears a quote from Bill Scheel, a Starbucks customer, that says that God may be a figment of our imaginations.Click to enlarge

That was until she got an unexpected jolt last week from her coffee cup.

Printed on the cup was: "Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure."

It is attributed to Bill Schell, a Starbucks customer from London, Ontario, and was included on the cup as part of an effort by the company to collect different viewpoints and spur discussion.

"As someone who loves God, I was so offended by that. I don't think there needs to be religious dialogue on it. I just want coffee," said Incanno, a married mother of three who is Catholic.

She wasn't satisfied with a company disclaimer saying the quote is the author's opinion, not necessarily that of Starbucks. It invites customers to respond at www.starbucks.com/wayiseeit.

Starbucks spokeswoman Sanja Gould said the collection of thoughts and opinions is a "way to promote open, respectful conversation among a wide variety of individuals. "

But Incanno said her Starbucks days are over.

"I wouldn't feel right going back," she said.

Edit: I did a search first, I promise.

I'd like to ask her what she would think if it were the other way around.

Not offended at all. I hear worse on TV. I go to Starbucks to buy overpriced fraps, not to read what's on the cup.

What a tool of a woman. If she let's something like that offend her so much then I'd love to see her when something unfavorable actually happens in her life.

granted i'm not a religious fanatic but i'm sick of these self-righteous religious fanatics that act all high and mighty because of their faith. I'm christian and I respect all faiths but sometimes, they take it way too far. . . it's a freaking coffee cup quote . . .

Not at all. People are forced to be exposed to religious quotes and discussions everywhere they go yet these don't seem to offend Christians. It's a two-way (or rather all-way) street. Either you can post anything about any religion or lack thereof, or you cannot have anything of any religion (or lack thereof). All or nothing.

A coffee cup should not be the medium for a person's opinion. People of differing opinions may also drink coffee, and thus be exposed to opinions that don't fit their world-view. Corporations like the coffee company in question are required to refrain from offending people and to avoid presenting any opinion whatsoever besides the logical "our product is good". This is to be expected, as it protects the opinions that are obviously more justified and it preserves objectivity and free will. The woman was quite justified in her rejection of said corporation.

Why???

She believes in Christ.... she is apparently right and needs to be compensated for others questioning her super strong faith.

IMO, no she wasn't. People in general are too uppity. Ideally it should be VERY hard to offend anyone. If you don't like something, and it's not hurting anyone, ignore it. It's as simple as that. Going to the media with this just proves that she's the type of person that shoves her views on everyone else.

I think there's a little bit of difference between somebody questioning your faith ("Why do you believe what you believe? What has led you to this point?") and making an indirect insult ("You're an idiot because you believe in something that's a figment of your imagination.") I'm not necessarily going to start buying exclusively Tully's coffee because of this but I don't really think that particular quote was the best way to promote open, respectful conversation among a wide variety of individuals.

Whether is be a coffee cup or a newspaper article, the fact is an opinion is an OPINION. If you don't like it, tough. You can't fight and whine about not having the world your way if something doesn't float your boat. This country especially needs to get over itself and stop catering to anyone who cries wolf. Grow up.

A similar thing happened at Baylor University.
Story here

Coffee cups with a gay author's quote about growing up homosexual have been pulled from Baylor University's Starbucks coffee shop.

Looks like all this controversy is exactly what Starbucks wants.

How is it not different that printing "GOT GOD?" on 100's of billboards across the nation?
Other end of the spectrum is much more disrespectful.... MUCH MORE.
