Hi all, I was hoping someone here can help me with an Office 2010 licensing question. I have a friend with a PC that is running really slow according to him. He said it's more than likely the computer just needs some clean up. I was planning to back up his important files, do a complete wipe and then do a clean installation of Windows 10. The problem is his copy of Office, which was likely pre-installed onto his machine. Is their a way to transfer that license of Office back onto the same machine after a complete wipe? Does MS licenses agreement allow us to reinstall a pre-installed version of Office back onto the same machine after a wipe?

If not I was planning on installing my copy of Office 2010 onto his machine after I do a complete wipe. As far as I know I believe I have 1 install left out of the 3 installs. The problem is I don't know sure, is there a way to find out how many installs I have left on my Office license? I've tried google searching and I even called up the Office sales phone number and from what I have researched online and from what I was told over the phone there doesn't seem to be a way in finding out. Thanks in advance for any help.

WOW, thanks ketchup. Great links. I've put the product key in and its been verified. My shopping cart shows Word 2010 for a total of $0.00. I'm afraid to hit the continue button in fear that it might waste an installation. Is it safe to assume that I still have 1 more install of Office left by just looking at this part of the screen?

I have not been to that particular page, as I had some quirks with mine:

However, based on how Microsoft normally handles things, the "continue" (and download) would not use up a license. Only the install would. And if it is re-installed on the same machine it was on before, that too would not use an additional license.

So Belarc Advisor manage to extract the Office product key that was found in the machine. The problem is the Office version they're using is really old, 2003. I've tried google searching a place to download Office 2003 using the product key legally but there doesn't seem to be a way unless someone here can provide a link? Thanks!

I don't think it's a matter of "installs of Office left".

I'm assuming you have 2010 Home and Student or a similar package that allows you 3 installations.

That's the point.

Three working installations at any given time.

You can install as often as needed provided you don't exceed 3 working installations. In the worst case scenario you may have to use phone activation, wait to speak to a real person, then explain.

As far as I know, the number to call for activation issues is 866-234-6020

3 working installations means exactly that, 3 working PCs. If it was installed on 3 PCs and 1 PC failed, then that means it’s now 2 working installations. You can install on the same PC as often as required.

As I understand it, MS Activation servers can detect that the program was installed at some stage, but cannot tell what PC it was installed on.

If online activation fails with a message of “too many installations” use phone activation, but do not respond to any prompts until given the option to speak to a real person, then explain you are installing after a failure of the previous PC and are within the 3 working installation limit.

You may find this in the Office 2010 EULA:

19. REASSIGN TO ANOTHER DEVICE. You may reassign the license to a different device any number of times, but not more than one time every 90 days. If you reassign, that other device becomes the "licensed device." If you retire the licensed device due to hardware failure, you may reassign the license sooner.

Unfortunately MS never offered official downloads of Office 2003. It was always distributed by CD pretty much

They only started to do that with Office 2007 and newer

Downloading it won't waste the key, instaling it will require you to add the key.

I also recently re-installed Office 2010 on another machine.
