If you saw my response in the other chair thread which you quoted on Monday (and my response in February in this very thread), I ended up with a Steelcase Leap. I was tired of cycling through garbage chairs every few years in the <$200 range.

Buy a Herman Miller chair from an office liquidator. You'll score a $1500 chair for a few hundred
I had considered a liquidator or refurbisher, but the prices ended up being similar to what I was able to get direct from the manufacturer at the time, when I accounted for sales and a big AmEx promotion ($150 off Steelcase). In the end, I've had the Steelcase Leap for 9 months, and it has been great. Also got my wife a Steelcase Think when they had another sale and AmEx offered me another $150 off... The Think is certainly cheaper and not quite as nice as the Leap, but far better than the shitastic Staples chair she had. She also doesn't WFH, so having the best chair isn't completely necessary.

Bumping this old-ish thread. Somehow, I managed to break the wheel socket in the base of the "not-so-high-quality" Bayside Metrex chair I got from Costco a few years ago.

I'm not a fan of the mesh seats, but don't mind the mesh back...so this thing self-destructing is kind of a blessing.
I'm tired of the Staples/Office Depot $200+ junk that falls apart about the time the warranty expires...so I want to at least consider the commercial quality chairs.

I DO NOT WFH, but game and watch videos/movies, etc for 4 to 6 hours every day...or more...so I want/need something well made and comfortable.

To the best of my knowledge, I've never seen, let alone sat in a Herman Miller or Steelcase chair...so I don't have any reference for the comfort. (possibly the drafteing chairs the college had when I was doing tbat...2007...but I'm not sure.
Seattle has a few used furniture stores, so I guess I can make the 3+ hour drive...which I SHOULD do before ordering something like a chair from an on-line place.
Also considering Haworth. Anyone have experience with those?

I guess part of it comes down to: how much are you looking to spend?

I think Haworth came up in my original search (I think maybe the Fern was one model I saw recommended a lot) when I was first looking for a nice office chair.

I can say that the Steelcase Leap chair I bought, and the Think for my spouse, have held up extremely well. I work from home, and the chair (the Leap) is just as good as when I bought it 2 years ago. I can sit for long periods of time, and my legs won't fall asleep, as they would start to do when my old Staples chair was getting flat.

I can get the Steelcase Leap (not sure if it's the v1 or v2) for about $300. I'd prefer something with a bit taller back and/or headrest, but that's not a deal killer.

I think they do sell a version with a headrest, but I skipped it on mine.

If you're unsure, it could be worth trying to find a place to just test some chairs out, though I know that can be difficult to find.

Yeah...Seattle has a couple of stores that deal in used office furniture, MAYBE Tacoma, and MAYBE Olympia. (~140 miles, 100 miles, 75 miles)

Has anyone here ever tried the BTOD refurbs? Not much more than the used Steelcase Leap chairs I'm seeing on Craigslist or Marketplace...with a 12 year warranty. Yes, the warranty is from BTOD, not Steelcase, so...will they still be around in 10 years? (For that matter, will I?)

I watched a couple of their youtube vids, one all about the refurb process. Looks like they do a good job...but, still gonna be over $600 for a freakin chair.

An off the wall suggestion, and I'm not sure if they are only on the UK, where I am but...

I bought this after years of having crappy Staples office stuff, and then a decent "gaming" chair. They all lasted 2-3 years. This has lasted 8 years so far; I work from home so spent 12 hours a day in it before my kids were born, THEN the first born wouldn't sleep at night and to help mum out, I used to sleep in the office chair with the kids across me on a pillow. The chair is still comfy as anything, no creeks or other noises. It is SOLID.

£900 at the time was steep, but they are built like tractor chairs, they have to be and are solid and comfy for hours and for days and years on end. Crazy though, my other half wanted one at the same time, so we went to the shop, and they could give us "office pricing" (for 2...) which knocked each down to £600, 50% off. I got black, OH wanted a different "premium" colour (is like a dark teal) and the guy is looking up how much extra that would be, and he's being nervous and sheepish about it, we're thinking an extra £200-250 for the premium skin... £25 he says... WTF SOLD.

Now, she's spent less time in hers (though still more than your average) and she's never had a 15lb baby asleep on her on it for more nights than I care to remember, hers is basically pristine, after 8 years.

Long > short: don't get an expensive gaming chair, get an expensive office chair, you (probably) won't regret it. I haven't...

I had the Herman Miller Aeron, which I loved until a relative sat in it, and broke it. He was over the 300 lbs (I think} weight limit. I have a Leap V2 now, and we just aren't getting along. I have a new gaming chair coming next month, a Secretlab TITAN Evo. A friend of mine raves about it, so I said why not.

Boomer - I absolutely loathe fabric chairs for the heat that radiates from my not so fat ass. Love the mesh of the Aeron which I use daily in my WFH setup.

I don't mind a mesh back, but the hard frame around most mesh seats can be uncomfortable.
