This is a hot deal as hopefully it will end all retail chaines from doing these scam practices. Rebates are the biggest scam shell game most retail stores used to entice purchaces and where you have to jump through hoops to get pennies back which usually if returned takes a minimum of 2 months to recieve a rebate.

As of July 2, Customers Receive Price Reductions Without Redemption Hassles

ITASCA, Ill., July 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- OfficeMax® (NYSE: OMX - News), one of the nation's largest office supply distributors with approximately 870 superstores, announced that, as of July 2, 2006, it has become the first national office products retailer in America to eliminate its retail mail-in rebate program -- a bold move to improve its customers' in-store experience and the overall value of shopping at OfficeMax.

Wonder if this includes rebates for products bought at OM where the rebate is through the product's company.

If that's the case, this might not be that great after all.

I read where people are very happy that they are stopping the rebate program. Do you guys really think they are going to give you the discount you get with a rebate or even close to it.Office Max was one of the worse to get rebates back from so when they asked their customers should they stop rebates, I guess the majority said yes. So now when the have tha hard drive on sale for $99 they'll discount it $10 instead of the $60 rebate they use to have. Don't forget that the companies count on not everyone sending for that rebate so youir not going to get near the lower price...I never understood why people hated getting money back from some thing they are going to buy anyway...

The issue is that rebates are a true PITA. I had rebates denied several years ago because I did not submit a SASE. The envelope + .29 cents(whatever postage was back then) that I did not include cost me $20 or something. True, it was my mistake for not reading that stipulation, but c'mon--they told me it would noty be honored and I should resubmit. Really??? And what was I supposed to send them after they had the originals of everything? A$$hats....

I dunno... Rebates are usually the bread and butter of the hottest DEALS. If there are no rebates, the deals won't be as hot! This makes me sad.

I don't know which people are so happy to see the rebates end. I look around at my 2 TiVos, 3 printers, a couple hundred CD-Rs, several surge protectors, sharpies, staplers and more all of which were free after rebate; post from my computer which was $72 AR with the $10 extra hard drive and the $20 DVD burner and I weep at the end of rebates knowing that the stores aren't going to just give me this stuff.

Sure they can be a pain to do, but, like casey said, not having them is going to mean higher final prices and certainly fewer good deals.

IMHO, OM hasn't had an even luke-warm hot deal since Boise Cascade took them over anyway.

I agree with casey and allisolm. To the ones that don't like rebates, don't buy it. There are plenty of sales that don't have a rebate associated with it but give a slight discount. I know people like that. They just want a little discount without the MIR. You really think Office Max is now going to sell a 160 GB Seagate drive for 19.99 after 40 MIR with 10.00 coupon like I got a few months ago. Now the deal will be 69 with a 10.00 off coupon if you're lucky enough to get those in the mail. Just because you guys don't like rebates or can't figure the system out, why should the rest of us pay the price?
Over the last 5-6 years I've probably sent in at around 300 rebates of various amounts. I have received all but one of them. The one was from a lousy company here in Fremont CA called Kaser, and I filed a BBB report on them.

I agree with the people that have said no rebates is going to be the end of awesome deals. No way is a retail chain going to discount items to the prices you would get them for after a rebate.

Does it really matter when OM hasn't had a deal in years? It's only OM rebates you can still get all the manufactures rebates. It doesn't and won't end or even come close to ending rebates and will only make it so OM customers will have seek out manufactures rebates instead of it just being simple. It will take more than this to keep their stores from looking like ghost towns.

Everyone (ok .. most everyone) that complains about rebates cant read simple instructions. Whens the last time we've seen a really scorching deal from Best Buy since they went to no-rebates, like OM will be doing. I have done ~20 rebates, and received every single one. 2 of them sent me a letter back saying something was wrong, but after a call/email/whatever, I showed em my copies and all was OK, and recieved the rebate a few weeks later. Sadly (this time) consumers drive everything... and this time they drove rebates out the door

So just use OM pricing to PM with.

btw... this weeks ad for OD showed "ebates" which is???

and isn't at least one state, MA? that requires rebates be taken as instant discounts by the retailer, wherein the retailer by virtue of its actual sales, gets $ back from the mfg's?

So a 1 GB stick PC2700 SODIMM for $49.99 with no rebates or a San disk 1 GB memory stick duo with adapter for $34.99 w/ no rebates is not luke warm? (both of which I purchased within the last month)...

as stated above, OM should go ahead and start calling their sale on the day after Thanksgiving RED FRIDAY then since their deals won't be very hot...

The idea of mail-in rebates is pretty simple. Offer the customer a better price based
on the fact that a large percentage of people will never get their rebate dollars.
Customers will either:

1) Not mail in their rebate
2) Not meet the requirements
3) Not cash their check
4) Have their rebate request rejected for invalid reasons.

Of course, it's #4 that really upsets people. I believe that most invalid rejections are
due to mistakes on the part of the rebate houses rather than fraud. Since I started
tracking my rebate at a website, www.rebate-tracker.com, I have received all of my
rebates. About 10% of those required a phone call, and only 1 required me to mail
copies. I just scan everything and have a C:\rebates subdirectory on my hard drive
where I keep everything.

Depending on the amount of the rebate, the documentation requirements, and time
window for applying for a rebate, the redemption rate for rebate-eligible products
is somewhere between 20-40%. There are cases where it is lower or higher for
large amounts or very restrictive conditions, that that is about the range.
Interestingly, having a small redemption window actually increases the percentage
of people who send in their rebates, as a large window allows the buyer to
"put it off" and eventually forget.

For a meticulous rebater such as myself, this is a "cold deal". If mail-in rebates
disappear, I will pay more for products. For most people, this will save them some
money.

The rebate-processing business, however, will not disappear without a fight. It will
be interesting to see if this trend continues, and how rebate processors and
manufacturers react.

Sometimes you need to keep calling and write down the names of people you talked to.

Sometimes it only goes through if you call a certain number of times.

The deals for us were financed by
1.) people not following up like that.
2.) people not completing sometimes complicated rebate requirements correctly.

No rebates, no super hot deals any more.
As simple as that.

First off... This isn't a hot deal. Don't post it. It's off-topic because there is no deal.

Second... you're all about to realize that OM is pulling a fast one on you. They're ending MAIL-IN rebates. $5 says they move to a completely online system for rebates.

It's also likely they will still show manufactuer's rebates... just not post any of their own rebates.
