Well........... there is blame on both sides. K Lowe should have planned to sign him earlier. He was not totally unprepared since his deal with the Islanders was rumored to be in place for a while. I think the sticking point was Smyth wanted 5.5 and K lowe offered 5.2 and they both would not budge.

K Lowe had to get something for the UFA and there is the possiblity that he can sign Smyth in the off season.

Big George said that he was very close to accepting the trade to Calgary to stick it to the Oilers. He did not have many nice words for K Lowe.

I know there is blame on both sides, but given the history of the marquee players setting sail, it really makes you wonder what is going on in E-town. Pronger, Peca, and now Smyth - not to mention all of the greats that shipped off before.

I know K Lowe was left out in the cold when Cujo left for $$. Smytty... I just don't see as that type of player. I didn't get to see his conference yet but apparently he was still in shock and had nothing but praise for the city and the team. It wasn't planned on his part, that much seems evident.

Every franchise has their franchise players... Nazzy in Van, Sundin, Iggy, Koivu, Alife, etc. When it comes time to sign these guys, you just bite the bullet and do it IMHO. I think K Lowe really dropped the ball on this one but if Smyth comes back and resigns, it will be the greatest trade ever, getting 2 prospects and a pick for 19 games left on Smyth's season.

So torn... all I know is that Smyth is not an Oiler at this time and the Oilers brass caved on this season. sucks man.

Novotny is UNDERrated if anything. I've watched every single game (at the home arena) that he's played in, and I believe he is a workhorse who would be valueable to any team that can skate. Zubrus is better than Novotny and most likely always will be, but Novotny will definitely be an above average asset for the caps (who will be golfing full time in a couple months). Zubrus on the sabres > Zubrus on the caps. He may only be a "rental player" for this playoff run, but he is going to fit right in on this winning team. The numbers Zubrus was throwing out there for contracts is way overpriced, which seems to be the quickly reverting trend.

I like the trades Buffalo made. Biron was gone this summer no matter what so using him to put together a trade is a-ok by me. I think Conklin will do just fine in Buffalo and I would have no problems throwing him in net for any single playoff game this year.


After watching the sabres (well, more like the rochester amerks) destroy the leafs, I feel really good about the trades and the amazing amount of depth this team has.
From their top line down to the fourth line back up depth guys in the minors (or currently called up), the team has nearly endless amount of burners. They can consistantly throw 4 high speed lines out on the ice for the entire game and have plenty of fresh legs in the last period.

This team is the real deal.

Ugh another well played game by the Sharks that resulted in a loss. At least we got one point for going into OT/SO. Nabokov did make a sweet save off Kariya in overtime. That's probably going into his highlight reel for his career.

Yep that's the nail in the coffin. Canes sitting in 9th too, albeit in an incredibly tight Eastern conference race. At least that one is coming down to the wire! What a difference a year can make though.

Smyth played well for the Isles too, assisting on the 1st goal of the game and then having the presence of mind to put the net back on it's moorings just seconds before Bergeron (LOL) scored. That's a legal play! What a player. Man, this sucks. My favourite Oiler... my favourite player... dammit all to hell.
