Hey I thought that was close to being a closer game. Isles don't miss the net on a few opportunities and you never know... but that may be as close as it gets this series. Dubie played pretty well though!

Yeah that was a bonehead play. Boyle could have done something instead of sprawl though... ie. cover Gio. oh well.

Having seen the reply at around 7PM, they must have seen him with his head down and turning his fot to push the puck in. No one on TV is showing it....very frustrating.

By the rules, I don't think it was kicking motion, but an intential redirection with his feet. Can't change the rules now though?!?!?!?

It was a total momentum killer to. With that goal, Ottawa might not have gotten so many goals and it might have been closer.

Hmm. I missed that replay too. I'd like to see that one. If so... still a pretty crazy amount of coordination to do that on the way down when you're out of control barreling towards the net. lol

LETS GO RED WINGS!! I tried my best to avoid the score while at the Thrashers playoff game, but I saw that they won 4-1. Listening to Home Ice on XM on the way home it sounds like it could have been 8-1 if Kiprusoff didn't play out of his mind.

Kipper made some outlandish saves. This coming from a Canucks fan :Q

I am watching the game now and Detroit pretty much did whatever they wanted in the first period.

Even though they were speaking glowingly about Zetterberg and Datsyuk I thought Zetterberg looked really rusty and Datsyuk looked pretty uptight.

They're only going to look better as this goes along.

Naw, were over that. It was painfully obvious Hull was in the crease, everyone knows that. The Stars were the superior team in that series though.
The refs didn't help out the Sabres as usual.

I work for the NHL so my opinion counts more than any of yours, besides the fact that I live in one of the greatest hockey towns ever, Los Angeles.

Detroit will win the cup. Make your bets now.
haha, LA one of the greatest hockey towns ever? Riiiiight. I'd put them right around number 30, mabey 29. Detroit will make a run, but won't win it.

Dubie was the only reason the game wasn't 6-1. The isles got dominated in all aspects of the game. One of the only things they have going for them is that they actually look like they WANT IT, unlike the Pens.

Having seen the reply at around 7PM, they must have seen him with his head down and turning his fot to push the puck in. No one on TV is showing it....very frustrating.

I was surprised they disallowed that goal. I didn't see an intentional kick towards the puck, unless Crosby is REALLY good at looking innocent. I figure that they would give the goal to the league's "savior". Toronto must still be mad that their team isn't playoff worthy and hasn't gotten near a cup in 40 years.

Here is my opinion about the first games of the playoffs...

Pens arn't getting past the first round. Fluery does not look like a playoff level goalie by any means. He may just have had a bad game but he looked skittish, made a lot of bad plays around the crease and looked like a very green rookie. On top of that the entire Penguins team didn't look like they wanted it at all. Therrien said that they were "feeling it out for the first game", there is no time to feel your opponent out in the playoffs. The pens either looked like they were nervous or appeared to be skating as if they have some swagger from such a strong finish in the regular season. I don't think the Pens have what it takes to make it through. If the pens lose their next game they are going down.

The canucks didn't deserve to win that game. I fell asleep within the first 5 minutes of the third OT. Dallas was all over them. Luongo was the only player to keep the canucks in the game. If Dallas keeps up that pace the Cancks won't last.

The Devils actually scored some goals, which is a big surprise. Holmqvist single-handedly lost that game for his team. Brodeur gave up more than I would have expected, but still looked good as usual. The game was decided by special teams, turnovers, goalie skill and a single dumb play. Tampa has a chance, but will lose in 6, mabey 7 if their 100 pointers put some past Brodeur.

The Rangers v. Thrashers game actually looked decently even, but the rangers have extra little something with experienced playoff players. Trashers will give the rangers a run for their money late in the series because they are a streaky team, but the rangers will take it in 7.

The sharks blew a 2 goal lead and lost cheechoo, it doesn't look good. The cheechoo hit wasn't an intentional dirty play, but not a single sharks fan will agree with me. Sharks arn't going to have the grit it takes to stay in this series. Preds in 6.

The wings basically destroyed the flames. The flames will lose the next game in Detroit, then win at home for game three, then lose the next two. There won't be a repeat upset like last year. Wings in 5. Wings won't win in the second round though, they arn't all that impressive. It's easy to get a lot of points when you beat up on teams who only gain 50-60 points in an entire season. Detroit is overrated.

The ducks didn't look all that great in their season opener, although they didn't have their starting goalie. Minnesota's superior defense will come together later in the series and beat the ducks.

As for the Sabres, they are the team to beat and will be hoisting the cup for us lowly folks in Buffalo.

First of all the Trashers roster has more combined playoff experience and just as many Cup Winners than the Rangers. Lethonen really cost the Thrashers the game tonight. Too many big rebounds and soft play in general. The 3rd period was as good as I have seen the Trashers play this year. This is going to be a good series for sure.

Detroit showed a lot tonight. EVERYONE was picking Calgary in this series. All I have heard for three days is that the Flames are tougher, faster and have better goaltending. Well, the Wings were tougher and faster tonight. I am still watching the game (I was at the Thrasher game and TiVo'ed the Wings game) but this game should have been 7-0 after two periods. Kiprusoff made some insane saves. Detroit completely controlled the play in both ends.

Detroit is far from overrated. If anything, it seems like they are being underestimated. They are just as talented and capable of going deep in the playoffs as Buffalo / NJ / Anaheim / etc. The most important part is that it's not CuJo or Legace letting soft goals in during crucial games. Hasek looks as good as ever and that makes all the difference.

There is one thing that we can both agree on, though.. Man, I love being at playoff games! Philips Arena was nuts tonight. I am proud of Atlanta and the fans here. They came out and cheered their asses off tonight.

Argh! Why do we have to wait until Saturday for the next Senators win? This is killing me. The other series are nice and swell but I cannot help seeing those teams simply as future victims to be done with. :|

I don't think everyone chose Calgary to win the series. Same thing happened 2 seasons ago when they made a cup run. First game lost by a reasonable margin against the canucks, they were written off like a bad habbit. Calgary came back and won the series.

The last two teams with 4 30+ goal scorers won the cup. The last two cup winners played the previous winner in their road opener of the regular season in which they won the cup. Buffalo has 4 30+ goal scorers and played the Canes in their road opener this season.

Oh I agree that Detroit is a good team. I'm just trying to let some negative energy flow and hopefully see them drop from the running.

The wings played tight hockey tonight and walked all over Calgary. I don't see how most people could pick Calgary to win this matchup, besides the tendency to love the underdog. Calgary did play in a tougher division than Detroit. Detroit had a moderately easy schedule this year.

As for the rangers;/thrashers; I think the rangers have the superior team and are on a bit of a streak coming out of the season. Rangers also played in a tougher division but put up good numbers. It should be a tight series though, which is a-ok by me.

Sometimes playoff games can bring in the more stuffy crowd due to higher prices, so you miss out on the average joe hockey fever. Personally I adore it all the same. Down south, for example North Carolina, playoff tickets were so much easier to get.

Well you should have stayed up because the Sedins went in to the reserve tanks and started to do thier thing

I would say the opposite....... if this keeps up the Stars won't last......... they had to use IV's after the game (reported by a reporter on a local radio station). The thing that concerns me more is our injury situation. Matt Cooke (groin day to day) Alex Burrows (concussion, probably out at least a week) and Ryan Kesler (broken finger out 3-4 weeks, he just had surgery on it).

I would say the Canucks deserved to win (well I am a bit biased). They never gave up a lead and they hung on to win. The only thing is they blew a 2 goal lead. The Stars dominated the 3rd (16 shots to 3) and they pressed hard into OT. But the Canucks (especially the Sedins) started to make great strides in the 3rd OT and they capitalized in the 4th. Of course you can say that "oh the only reason the Canucks won was because Luongo saved your arse" but hey........ he's a part of the team and it's his job to save our bacon. Also 5 goals don't hurt either.

Both Turco & Luongo played awesome games. Turcos stick play is pretty amazing (although it almost go him in trouble in OT) and I think Luongo needs to work on his. Now that Luongo has a playoff game under his belt........ you won't see as many bad goals (like Dallas goal #4).

The Dallas fan forum are complaining that two of our goals should not have counted. They say the Naslund goal should have been too many men....... but it was not called. Thems the breaks (may I remind them of Hulls foot in the crease vs Buffalo). I am sure the Canucks will get an unlucky break against them (things seem to even out). They say Smolinki touched it with a high stick but replays show it hit #43's hand. They also say the "Smoke's" goal should have been whistled down before because two Stars made a hand pass........ I hate to break it to them but defensive players can hand pass to each other in the defensive zone

I must say that Stars fan forum are quite civil and way better sports then some other unnamed forums

I never underestimate such a good team as the Stars.......... this is going to be a really long series and I hope we win it

Go Canucks Go!!!

Cheers,
Aquaman

FWIW, the league is taking no further action on the Hartnell / Cheechoo hit. Here's hoping you homers realize it was an accident.

Trust me, all I heard on Home Ice (XM), CBC, ESPN, VS and Calgary/Canada fans for three days leading up to last night's game was how much tougher, grittier, faster, etc Calgary was than Detroit.

I know it was only one game, but I just hope that people realize that Detroit is not a soft team destined for an early exit.

I was surprised to hear the Wings only lost 4 times at home this year! Regardless of divisional opponents, that is insane. You'd think that since I can see the Joe from where I am sitting, I would be aware of their dominance at home

Sorry to but in, I'm just dying to talk hockey with someone, ANYONE!!

I think the consensus is / was that since Detroit plays in a weak division, Calgary would come in and kick the crap out of them. Also you have to look back to last year when the Wings were upset by an 8th seed. I think in general, people like to give the upstart teams a lot of credit. Also, a number of Wings have a history of not performing in the postseason. It's a number of things really. This could be one of those home team wins series, which would be great because it would go 7

edit: i'm going for lunch. there had better be posts here when I get back!!! :|

I could not have said it better myself. And remember, I'm not the one who was saying Detroit or Calgary would win. I was just stating that all I had heard from just about every media outlet is that the Flames are going to wear down the Red Wings and win a long series. I like Detroit's chances in a long series because Calgary completely sucks ass away from the Saddledome.
