Watch CBS(or other US Network) cover NHL? No thanks! Did that once on Fox(IIRC) and listened to the Announcers chat about their Families! Once in awhile they went back to discussing the game at hand. If the NHL was smart they'd make the Canadian Networks(CBC, TSN, and Sportsnet) their Official Broadcasters and just give US Networks a licence to show the feed
That's what I'm saying. They sit there and talk about their time in the "old time" nhl. Then chat about other sports for a bit. Mabey talk about their car. Then they will break in with "so and so (improperly pronounced name) has the puck", then back to the bs small talk. This incredibly awful announcing makes just about everyone in Buffalo mute the TV, put on the radio, and hope the delay isn't really bad. I've actually turned the TV off and just listened to the radio numerous times.
I think Crosby would definitely be as good. Guys back then didn't have moves like that and they didn't have his complete package. You put him in the league in the late 70s and early 80s, he is going to rival or surpass Gretzky's numbers. Crosby is a physical player, as much as he does embellish some hits (he used to get all of those calls in the QMJHL so it's natural for him to try to get them even now) he does have a physical game and creates a lot of his own plays. He's no Ovechkin in terms of hitting but he does possess a good amount of that skillset.
You could argue both ways in terms of Gretzky today and Crosby then as far as how good they would be. In Gretzky's time, the goaltending wasn't nearly as good as it is now and neither was the defensive play. Teams didn't play the trap or the left-wing lock back then and if they did, it wasn't as polished and practiced as it is today. Not to take anything away from Gretzky, who had the greatest hockey sense of all time and could see plays develop before they happened. He was also basically impossible to hit. Players that tried could maybe catch a peice of his jersey if they got lucky.
No one will ever come close to 200 again IMHO. It was just a different time in the NHL and is also a testament to the greatness of Lemieux (199) and Gretzky with several 200-pt+ seasons. I can't believe people are saying that the Great One was overrated although Bobby Orr was the best of all time in my opinion.
I wasn't aware hockey was ever on CBS. NBC does the games. Which reminds me, Pierre Maguire is hard to understand with Buffalo dick in his mouth.
Yea I'm with you on the difference in the play of the game today. The trap was in it's infancy and the left wing lock really wasn't a set scheme yet (as far as I know). In the 90s these two schemes were developed and played to perfection. Though I think that with the new rules, specifically the lifting of two-line passes, the wing lock can be countered if you have a guy hanging up high and some really fast forwards and D-men willing to take risks. Of course if it goes wrong against the lock, you have a huge odd man rush on your hands. The trap is still strong no matter what, but both systems can slow the game to a crawl.
I've never heard anyone say Gretzky was overrated and if they did I would have laughed at them. I've always been aware of the Gretzky v Orr argument. Orr is one of the best players ever, there is no doubt about that, though he did play in an era when D wasn't as polished and goalies were nothing like they are now. In the end I don't think Crosby is going to beat the astronomical records set by Gretzky and Orr, or even Lemieux. He will definitely be a supurb player and deserves the numbers he generates, but the media and fans need to chill out for a few years and see what this kid can do. With all the Crosby hype it seems few are paying attention to Malkin, unless you're really into hockey. I really like Malkin, and with Crosby and Staal the penguins should win it within a few years, hopefully before the next lock-out.
But back to the guys still in the hunt. Hate to say it but the implosion of Vancouver will be complete tonight and the goddamned stars will move on. Frigging Texas, has anyone in that entire state ever filled up their backyard with water to make a rink?
I'm torn between the Devils and Sens. Both of them are a team that can beat the Sabres across 4 games if the Sabes make it. I think I'd prefer the Sens for a nice rematch of last year. Emery is better this year, but I'm sure he will sweat having 4 scoring lines coming at him. The sens v sabes would also be a better hockey series, none of that devils trap crap.
Detroit looks dangerous, as usual. While watching that series I thought to myself, "has anyone remember to go high on Hasek?". The Flames had their chance in the first overtime to win the game, but straight up missed the net, not much excuse for that. It only takes 1 extra second to beat Hasek and the Flames just didn't understand that, or didn't get that extra second in front of him. I'd love to see Hasek play the finals in Buffalo, he always comes to HSBC and stinks up the joint.
I hate Dallas but I think a Ducks v Sharks series would be great. Although a wings v sharks series would be great too. Anyway it pans out the matchups will be great, as usual in playoff hockey.
In the end all I want is to see one cup come to Buffalo, just one while I'm still alive. If I see one then I can die happy. Everyone and their grandma here knows this is the year they have to do it. I've never really prayed for anything before, but I'm praying for the cup now. If it happens then I know there is a god!
Go frigging Sabres!
