Ovechkin's intention was not the knee since he leaned in with his upper body like every hit he attempts. He only got the knee since Gonch started turning his body away. He would've been completely flattened if he hung in there given where the puck was and he knew it.

just saw this quote from Ovy which is exactly what I thought last night:

"It tried to hit him and he tried to move to his left, and I don't have time to realize what is going on and I hit [him with] my knee," Ovechkin said. "It was accident. I'm not the kind of guy who wants to injure a player like this, especially [because] I know Gonch. I tried to hit him with my shoulder and he moved left but his legs were in the same spot."

I will also add that when he attempts his hits, he tries to explode into the player at the last stride. Some see this as leaving his feet and sometimes he _ends up_ doing that. There's a difference between leaving your feet to hit someone up high and trying to explode into a hit at an angle. No doubt he hits to hurt - it's part of his intimidation factor - and that's the point of throwing your entire body weight into a nice hit - but he doesn't hit to injure - most every hit is elbows in and shoulders to their opponents chest. In addition, a lot of the air he gets is from after the contact is made because he's at a higher position and leverage dictates that he will pop upward while his man goes down. If you're going to call anything on him, you can sometimes call a charge, which have been called in his past, and that's always up to the refs. Ok, I'm done with the soapbox.

another fucking defensive deflection... I've had it with this shit... I don't even want to watch game 6. No words describe the anger I feel right now at their ability to capitalize on cheap sh!t over and over. The Caps have scored 4 actual game winners and the Pens 1. There are simply no words. I'd rather the season be over on this game than to have to sit through 1 or 2 more of this.

If you watch that game winner again on replays, you'll see that it was actually an attempted pass by Malkin to Crosby that got deflected. Crosby was set and all alone with an open net staring at him (Varlamov bit on Malkin's shot/pass). I give it a 90-95% probability of a score anyway had that not been deflected and come clean to Crosby.

I only saw the caps score 2 game winners, pens on the other hand have 3 game winners.


Sucks about gonchar though. I didn't think the hit was Ovechkin fault entirely, just a bad outcome for gonchar.
