Waiit.. That was last year..

Wait.. The Wings swept the Avs and Franzen outscored Colorado by himself in the series.

Wait.. Quennville was the coach of the Avs and now he is the coach of another team playing the Red Wings in the Western Conference Finals.

LOL

Yes thank you for stating the obvious. As long as someone beats the Wings, thats all I care about. Whether its the Hawks, Pens/Canes I don't care. Wings fans are greedy bastards and nobody outside of Michigan and other bandwagon fans around the country who suddenly become fans of the best teams give a shit about the Wings or want them to win.

Sure Wings fans are greedy. They are the best run organization in the NHL. They develop talent internally better than any other organization.

They deserve all of the success that they have. Mike Babcock made a great point.. The Red Wings have made it to the conference finals three years in a row, even in a salary cap-based NHL. That is a true testament to a good team.

I'd rather be greedy and hated on by the Colorado's and Columbus' of the world than to be on the sidelines pulling against my hated rival (and I know the feeling). With all of their success, they are always the team with the target on their back. They are the first team to be ridiculed for bowing out in the first round.

Don't blame a guy like me, who was born and raised in Michigan and who spends his own money to fly back to Detroit for playoff games, for being proud. The city doesn't exactly have a lot to be proud of at times.

Although Quennville has a history of trouble with the Wings, I think Chicago will be a tough opponent. Looks to me like another great series which will go 6-7 games.

Hey, as long as you are born and raised in Mich then I have no problem with you as a Red Wings fan. Its the majority of fans from outside Mich that piss me off and are only fans because they have been consistently the best for so long.

Its HARDLY the same for most teams. The red wings are one of the only teams in hockey that I find people consistently hate outside of michigan or bandwagon fans. There are other teams but none that match people's hatred for the wings. Other teams like this are the Patriots in football, and the Lakers in basketball - also the Yankies in baseball.

If you took a nationwide poll, the red wings would be at the top of hated teams in the NHL. As would the other teams I named above in other sports. Prove me wrong

If I wasn't born, raised, and still live in SE Michigan I could see me liking the wings for a few reasons. They have no superstars and rely on team play. They have a smaller team and don't mind getting their nose bloodied if it gets them closer to the prize. Their front office might just be the best front office in all of sports.

The only reason to dislike them is because they win and I can understand that. No one wants to lose.

That was one of the dumbest things I've ever read on any sports thread/forum.

My uncle was born and raised in Newfoundland, and has been a Wings fan since the 40's, when everyone in Canada was a leafs fan. He's been a Wings fan all along, even more so now that Dan Cleary is the first Newfoundlander to lift the cup, and is also a Red Wing. Living outside of Michigan and being a wings fan doesnt make you a bandwagoner. (for the record I currently live right outside Detroit, and rew up just south of here)

So what if people hate the wings? Happens in any dynasty, just like people hate the yankees. Personally I think its stupid to hate a team just because they are good for several years in a row. I think its immature to hate a team because they knocked off one of your teams.

Typically if a team I like gets knocked out of a playoff run, I cheer for the team that beat them to win it all, that way it makes my team look a little better. If the other team getss swept in the next series, then that makes my team look even worse.

No superstars? Really? They have 9 or 10 top notch NHL players. Hossa, Draper, Datsyuk, Chelios, Zetterberg, Franzen, Holmstrom, Rafalski, Lindstrom, Osgood.

Their team is loaded. They are team more geared with veteran skill and a handful of excellent young players that give it their all. Their positional play is top of the league. Their special teams are on point and Osgood is a brick wall when he's on. Watching this squad play is quite often like watching hockey clinic footage.

Their front office is top flight too. They manage to have players sign with them for relatively cheap prices (because these guys know the organization is serious about winning). They really get the best bang for the buck out of their players, and have been for some time. They have consistently drafted well for the past 20 years. They also have great leases on the arena and associated facilities. They run a top notch organization in a city that is completely decimated.

Now the wings are about to play the young, hungry, fearless team in the league, the blackhawks. It should pan out to be a fantastic original 6 match up (it better damnit!)

As for people hating the red wings... everyone hates the winner, right? Though for a place that calls itself "hockeytown", it's really not that much of a hockey town.

Anyway, I would really like to see the Hawks and the Pens in the finals. I fucking hate the canes, hate them, a lot.

The team is loaded with very good players, but not superstars. For all their winning you don't see them marketed much by the league.

The term hockeytown was coined to denote prevalence of hockey in the entire metro area. I think when you add up youth hockey + college hockey + all the other leagues and at the end add in the Wings you'll find the metro area as being pretty hockey crazy. The term hockeytown doesn't specifically point to the contributions by the Wings.

To be fair, the league only really "markets" a few players (Ovechkin, Crosby, etc). The Red Wings are loaded with superstars. Lidstrom is a 6-time Norris winner and top five D-man of all time. Datsyuk was the Selke and Lady Byng winner last year, as well as a Hart / Selke / Lady Byng finalist this year. Hossa was the highest profile free agent last year and has been a superstar for years. Zetterberg was a Selke finalist last year as well as the Conn Smythe winner.

To say that the Wings don't have superstars just because they aren't in every commercial on the NHL network is wrong.

But I do have to disagree with SampSon regarding Detroit and it's suburbs and the Hockeytown moniker. You can pass judgment regarding empty seats for first round playoff games all you want. People in Detroit love the Red Wings and hockey in general.

The Wings are sometimes a victim of their own success because people have limited resources for expensive playoff hockey tickets. Can you blame them if they won't (or can't) pay $100+ a seat for a first round game? They've been in the playoffs 18 years in a row.

Well, all four teams I wanted to win in the conference semifinals lost. So I guess that means we're going to see a Detroit v. Carolina Stanley Cup series.

grrrrr :|

I share a very similar sentiment for many reasons, not the least of which is how the Canes were gifted the Stanley Cup back in '05-'06.

So a friend of mine knows some people in the Carolina organization. He called one of them to see if there are any tickets left from their allotment for the Eastern Conference Finals. He calls me this afternoon and says he's got three tickets for the Monday night game down in Pittsburgh.

So, I'll be there in Pittsburgh Monday night. Going to be leaving Albany around 9am and pull into Pittsburgh around 4pm. Long haul but it's going to be worth it, even though I'm a Wings fan. My first ever NHL Playoff Hockey game.

Except the Pistons recently won it all and are currently still a perennial playoff contender...

Also baseball sucks, and while the Lions suck, at least they can wear Sanders jerseys with pride. Face it, their sports situation really isn't that bad, not nearly as bad as say Cleveland, who will win something significant for the first time in like ever if the Cavs go all the way.

The Tigers are leading their division and set records last year for attendance.

The Pistons are right where they want to be. They will have more money for free agents than any other team over the next two years. What they were doing this year wasn't pretty, but it was intentional and Dumars is the man.

The Lions? You can't talk shit when you were 0-16, but the product they throw on the field this coming fall won't won't be the same team. I have every intention of revisiting this in the fall with a thread and poll devoted to their projected record. They'll be far from a playoff team, but they have a chance at mediocrity, just like you.
