Poll needs to be amended...

Green Bay doesn't have a chance in hell of beating the Pats in the SB.

Nor do the Giants.

/fixed

I don't know. The Giants came *this* close to beating the Pats in a game that the Pats really wanted. It's possible. Unlikely, but possible.
The Giants had people in the secondary then. They are so banged up now, Eli might have to fill in.

Ross says he's gonna play, and Webster will be filling in for Madison if he can't go. Webster put together 3 terrific games in a row, so they're not really THAT banged up. The only other guy out is Dockery, but he never starts anyway.

BRATS MY MAN, F'IN BRATS for food! Brats and some buffalo wings, along side nachos with taco dip FTW.

For a beverage, well, I like beer, but since I've become an alcoholic, WHISKEY!

Packers FTW!

LADIES: The hottest QB is:
1. Tom Brady (New England Patriots) Brett Favre (Green Bay Packers)

2. Brett Favre (Green Bay Packers)

3. Eli Manning (New York Giants)

tied for not much hotness

3. Philip Rivers (San Diego Chargers)

actually, Tony Romo would come in second... if Dallas were there.

I don't think you can even begin to have this debate. Greatest team is brought into the scope of the argument when there has been a consistency of accomplishments over time.

They might be having one of if not the greatest SEASON of all time, but that in no way qualifies them as the greatest TEAM of all time.

That would be like comparing the 2003 Marlins world series team to the 40s/50s Yankees.

I take it you don't watch the NFL much.

I take it that you aren't really a fan of the NFL yourself. The current Patriot team (the one you are claiming that I don't know anything about) was basically overhauled in the offseason.

Their entire WR corp was replaced this past year. They got rid of their starting RB last year (Dillon although he was sharing carries w/Maroney) and they overhauled their D by adding Seau and Thomas.

I would think that the greatest members of the greatest team of all time would have to be part of the team for more than one year. To think that this team would still be at this point without Moss, Welker, Stalworth, Seau and Thomas is pure lunacy. They would be good....but undefeated?

I take it you don't watch the NFL much:

Greatest team is brought into the scope of the argument when there has been a consistency of accomplishments over time.

I don't know where you've been the past seven seasons.

Greatest team for me implies a single season. When people talk about the greatest teams, they mention the '85 bears, '89 49ers, '93 cowbows, etc. In this context you'd be considering the '07 pats, which have yet to win the SB.

When people start talking about dynasty's, you look at how well the franchise did over an extended period of time. I don't consider winning 3/4 superbowls a "dynasty," even in the age of free agency and salary cap. Dynasty implies winning a shit load of games over a much longer period of time. For that reason, I don't consider the 90s Cowboys as a dynasty. I also think that the Pats need a few more winning seasons before I'd consider them a dynasty.

In the modern era, I think the 49ers have set the standard.

1981 13-3 Won SB
1982 3-6 -----
1983 10-6 Lost NFC Championship
1984 15-1 Won SB
1985 10-6 Lost WC
1986 10-5-1 Lost Divisional
1987 13-2 Lost Divisional
1988 10-6 Won SB
1989 14-2 Won SB
1990 14-2 Lost NFC Championship
1991 10-6 -----
1992 14-2 Lost NFC Championship
1993 10-6 Lost NFC Championship
1994 13-3 Won SB
1995 11-5 Lost Divisional
1996 12-4 Lost Divisional
1997 13-3 Lost NFC Championship
1998 12-4 Lost Divisional

5/5 in the SB
appeared in 10 NFC Championship Games
17/18 seasons with at least 10 wins
16/18 seasons with playoff appearances

We will never be able to accurately declare a "greatest" team of all time in the NFL. The rules/procedures have changed so much over the years that comparing great teams from the 70s and 80s to teams now is almost as bad as comparing a rugby player to a football player.

A small example:

Someone in this thread mentioned Randy Moss. Sure Moss is an amazing receiver, but how can you compare his accomplishments to Jerry Rice? When Rice played pass interference calls happened much more rarely and receivers were getting pummeled off the line of scrimmage. Would I say Rice is better than Moss? Probably not, but on the same note there is no way I would say Moss is better than Rice.

rationality does not belong in this thread, for it is about Patriots/RedSox/Celtics (soon enough) fans :|

I came back to the thread to follow up on any responses and as far as I saw, yours was the only response.

It's probably a good thing I started ignoring the thread... I can only imagine the crap being posted from that point forward.

If anyone has legit gripes with my post feel free to site my post or PM.

not even close...

There are several recent historical teams (SB winners or not) that I think are better than this pats team.

85 bears
88 niners
89 niners
90 giants
91 skins
92 bills
92/93/94 cowboys
94 steelers
95 niners
96 packers
97 broncos
02 Ravens

Fins still won when they had to drop to backup QB... The Pats would lose in a heartbeat with either of the Matt's at the helm. Espeically with that average at best running game.

Though the Pats don't have to worry about Brady getting hurt since the NFL put a special protection on that little bitch ever since John Lynch ripped his head off

Pats only have an above avg defense, terrible running game but probably the greatest pass offense of all time.

All the other teams this year are mediocore. Look at how many losing teams became winning teams this year.

The Pats have a good team and certainly not the greatest.

terrible running game? Did you see what Maroney did to the jaguars? It's picking up steam right now... when Maroney gets into space, he's dangerous.

That was probably his best game this year vs the jags. The rest of the year he sucked. And he was 2nd string when Sammy Morris was healthy.

The Patriots rushed for more yards than Indy, Packers, Seahawks and the Cowboys. Who would have though they had such a terrible running game!

Mostly trash yards. They depended on the pass all season long. Their top 2 backs totalled for 1100 yards. Maroney and Morris are 2nd tier imho.

Pats under Bill Belichick are UNDISPUTEDLY the ABSOLUTE BEST NFL Football team to EVAR play the game.... Period!!

They are a machine. A mechanical-juggernaught-machine and there is not one other them that can even come close to their level of play at the same level of consistancy that the Patriots bring.

I am NOT a Patriots fan - I am a Rams fan (as hard as that is to admit). I've vehemently hated the Pats ever since the 2001 Superbowl!!! But, there is no denying their greatness.

According to football outsiders, Maroney was either the 2nd or 4th best RB in the league, according to DVOA... they only reason they didn't run it more often was because their passing game is that much better than their running game. There's a difference between having to rely on the pass because you can't run and having a passing game so dominant, you don't need to run.

Willie Parker
Adrian Peterson
Fred Taylor
Brian Westbrook

These single backs are better than the combined tandem of Maroney & Morris...

Classless fans? Really? I'm going to go with cleveland and new orleans as champions of the classless fans. Maybe the NE fans are annoying, but they don't attempt to physically assault their own players and the refs during a game. And philly is in there too because, though I can't remember specific incidents, it's freakin' philly, whose fans have been known to boo santa claus.

Indy booed that 15 year old girl for wearing a pats jersey so they definitely move ahead of the pats in terms of 'most classless fans'

If it had been at Foxboro and she'd been wearing a Manning jersey NE fans would've booed, just like any fans would boo if she'd been wearing the jersey of the home team's biggest rival.
