This is a bigger deal than meets the eye.

First, I had stated in the past that if Samsung settles before the trial actually began, it would be around $1.0b - $1.5b. It ended up being $900m, the difference is peanuts if you look at the other factors.

1) They are now in bed with the #1 memory manufacturer in the world.
2) One less opponent, less legal fees, validation from the industry that Rambus is valid
3) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that the companies signed to develop future technology
4) This will no doubt put pressure for Hynix to settle (and I think they eventually will).
5) Micron knew the settlement was coming and used the sickness as an excuse, their joint defense is over.
6) Stock up only 10% on this news? Wait until tomorrow when the headlines each the main market.

FWIW, I bought a few more thousand shares tonight.

Now I gotta think about to do this Thursday... Judge Kramer may delay a little because of this, but the ITC decision is on Friday...

AHHH!

Congrats fellow RMBS investors. I waited 10 years for something like this to start rolling, at least you guys waited 2-3 at the most (since I first mentioned it here)!

Opps, forgot to add, I think Elpida (joint company between Hitachi and NEC) signs next. I also think we'll run tomorrow. I also also think if we get decent news Thursday and positive news Friday, RMBS will be trading $35-$40.

P.S. Thanks for the "midas touch" nickname, I smile when I see it. But really, I'm human like everyone else and will be wrong in the future, but it won't make me afraid of making more bold predictions

CONGRATS AGAIN! I'm going out to get a drink, no sense in getting couped up on the message boards any longer when I can wake up tomorrow to a plethora of RMBS headlines!

That is the total value that Samsung is paying/investing, but the RMBS figure is $700 according to this link: http://www.eetimes.com/news/design/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=222301502

Either way, its disappointing but I believe it will lead to good things especially if the trial is not delayed.

I believe that $ 200 portion is very positive for Rambus, actually. Samsung now owns 8% of Rambus, which makes it top 3 holder, and has to hold onto those share for several (18?) months. I don't think Samsung is stupid enough to let that $ 200 million worth less.

Also, AFAIK, Samsung has been regretting of not buying Qualcomm since 90's. That 8% in Rambus may become a charm for Samsung if Rambus becomes anything like Qualcomm (Which is.. very possible) in a long term. I am sure they don't want to make the same mistake - especially since memory division is one of their largest areas.

What do you guys think of Qualcomm (QCOM) in terms of long term investments? QCOM is responsible for the snapdragon processor for cellphones.

Whats the etiquette when it comes to discussing making profits from investing in stock? Take for an example, how nobody talking about how much you make at a job with your co-workers.

I starting accumulating RMBS again last Wednesday. Worked out quite well. Probably going to sell 1/2 today and keep the other shares.

i'm up on RMBS today as I have 500 shares, but I have 200 of those shares locked up in May $22 CALLs. Any chance of this thing dipping back below $22, or should I just cash it out now?

Either way I'm up.

Either way I'm up.

$35-$40 if JK denies and ITC finds RMBS' graphic controller patents valid, infringed and bans Nvidia from importing to the US... $40+++ domino effect if licenses now line up because the gorilla Samsung signs.

$19-$20 if ITC goes bad. I think the ITC takes center stage now at this time rather than JK's decision to postpone.

ITC will release after hours on Friday... so next week could be HUGE. There's 11 million shares short - that will take time to cover. The majority of shares are owned by institutions or retail investors who are probably not going to part with their shares in the short-term.

Keep in mind, Samsung used to be a paying customer before this settlement... so the money they owed Rambus was less. Either way, this settlement was a sweetheart deal for both. It got Samsung out of huge liabilities for what is considered small change for them, and Rambus got the biggest memory player on their side, along with close to a billion dollars.

Drive's post which I pretty much agree with (someone I knew in the TMF days)

Samsung got a heck of a deal yesterday. $200M plus an inexpensive forward license really shows how much leverage Samsung has in the marketplace. On top of that, Samsung got a pre-settlement price on $200M worth of Rambus stock. Samsung simply bended Rambus to its will.

Despite the super sweatheart nature of the deal, I think it bodes well for Rambus. Samsung has the power to put Rambus technology legitimately and fully into the marketplace. I'm not just referring to DRAM in computers. I am thinking of XDR in televisions. Samsung sells boatloads of televisions and with their recent XDR announcement, I'm sure many of Samsung's flatscreens will contain XDR. I'm also thinking of mobile memory. If Samsung puts its weight behind Rambus technologies, which I think it will, then other companies might also see the benefit.

I have thought for a long time that Elpida has been waiting for Samsung to settle and I still think so. I think Elpida will play follow the leader and want to sign with Rambus. Elpida probably has some lingering doubts about Micron getting off scott free. Yet I think Elpida knows as well as anybody that Judge Robinson will likely get overturned. Elpida also knows that Rambus has the goods on Micron and Hynix in the AT case.

I think the AT trial will be postponed somewhat. I think Judge Kramer will give Micron 4 weeks because of Price's illness and to adjust their strategy now that Samsung isn't involved. Even if this case is delayed much longer than just a month, it isn't all bad. It would be great if spoliation were removed as a factor in this trial by the approximately August CAFC ruling. Of course I would rather have the AT trial sooner rather than later, but there would be a silver lining if things got postponed to later this year.

I have spent some time reading the public ITC documents and I don't have a good feel for Judge Essex's leanings. It is clear that the ITC staff came out strongly in favor of Rambus, not only in validity and infringement, but also in regards to spoliation. If Judge Essex trusts the opinion of the ITC staff, Friday will be a great day for Rambus.

The implications of Judge Essex's ruling can not be over-estimated. If he rules in favor of Rambus and his ruling is upheld by the commission, it is only a matter of time until nVidia settles. It is only a short matter of time if the CAFC doesn't suspend an exclusion order, pending appeal. Rambus could then take the ITC ruling to Judge Illston in federal court. I'm sure she will take the ITC ruling under strong advisement. With the CAFC ruling coming so soon down the pike, that could also be handed directly to Judge Illston. With those two rulings, the federal infringement trial against nVidia will be solved without Judge Illston barely having to lift a finger. Going back to my original point on the ITC, this highly depends upon the ITC staff being respected by Judge Essex.

Once the ITC ruling is in place and stamped by the CAFC, many other companies will see the writing on the wall. There are dozens of non-DRAM companies that will depend on this decision to decide whether to sign with Rambus. I think it could be a watershed event.

I decided to buy some premarket shares. I don't know if the stock will go up or down today, but I think this morning's price presents a good long-term value. I think the rest of 2010 looks quite bright for Rambus.

Must say Im a little disaappointed. Samsung settles and the stock barely gets back to its 52 wk high. Must be the overall shitty market today as well. Oh well, here to a string of successes. Im wondering if I should get some nvidia calls in just in case.

Since RMBS (both shares and options) is already major portion of my portfolio, I bought AMD $9 call and NVDA $ 19 call as a gamble for both side since both of them in red today. With AMD earning release and ITC decision this week, it would be fun to watch if my calls worth something. Also, I bought few RMBS $ 20 put just in case when RMBS was over $ 24 this morning.

Let's see how those 3 options valued on Monday!

I sold my Feb $18 puts I had and bought Feb $21 puts for $0.65 earlier this morning in case an adverse situation arises. Still holding all 13,000 shares.

I don't think Nvidia calls are going to be worth much, even with a win. They're a much bigger company and this result won't affect the stock price as much as it will Rambus'.
