Thome just hit his 600th home run. I was in the seats to see him hit his 400th HR June 14, 2004 against the Reds. That was incredible to see. He's a great player.

Universally loved by friend and foe alike, and with good reason. One of MLB's classiest and most approachable and genuinely humble stars.

He never got a big head . . . not from 'roids and not from fame.

Old school all the way.

Helms was awful in Philly, but he always destroyed us when he played for another team. Seemed like a good dude, though. Never complained about being a role player. Dobbs used to be one of the game's best PHs. What happened there?

Helms has nothing left, sad to say.

As for Greg Dobbs, PH'ing is like relief pitching, only worse. It chancy, often short term, and the results can be very, very volatile.

Dobbs has ONE supremely fine season for the Phils in that role, so when I had briefly mistaken Helms for Dobbs, I was stoked and thought, "YES, the baseball gods have smiled upon us one more time!"

That's funny, I saw him hit his 300th with the Phillies. I was at most of that game, there were several long rain delays.

Actually, he hit his 300th when he was with the Indians off Eric Milton, who the Phillies' starter the night he hit his 400th. That means we were at the same game. They probably did everything they could to not call the game early as it went into its first rain delay at mid 3rd, which eventually lasted nearly 2.5hrs. It was eventually called mid 9th. It's funny because it was a make up a previously rained out game.

You're right, they were playing at Philly. That was our first time in CBP, so my friend and I walked around the stadium just seeing all the cool stuff. We were used to the Vet. I now remember that we had RF bleacher seats, which are the farthest away and prove there's not a bad seat in that park.

Eric Milton. Jeez. All I remember was that he gave up a LOT of home runs.

Griffey was going for 500th, but sat out so he could attempt to hit it at home. Lame!

I remember Milton had like a 5.00 ERA and STILL had 14 wins because of all the run support the Phils offense gave him.

Remember those obnoxious fans up in the ~305 section by the break in right field? Yeah, that was us hanging out during the entire rain delay.

Was randomly flipping channels and stopped on espn, right for the Thome HR live. Sucks for Detroit that it was the deciding HR against them and they're in a pennant race.

More JV domination.

Elias:
Verlander is just the 7th pitcher since 1970 to reach 18 wins, 200 innings and 200 strikeouts by August 16.... 4 of the previous 6 pitchers went on to win the Cy Young Award:

Red Sox turned a pretty nifty triple play last night. Pedroia's pivot was particularly sweet to watch.

Poor Shawn Rodriguez. He was HBP in both games and grounds into a triple play.

Yeah, it was a nice looking 5-4-3 triple play. One of the HBP was on his knee, but he later stole a base, so no worries there. Luckily the Rays still won to split the twin bill. Complete games by Shields and Niemann as well.

We have a TV at the office, so it's nice to walk by and get an update on the game. Another afternoon game today. If only I could borrow a laptop and remote into my main system to do work and watch at the same time.

You're telling me! I hate sitting here "watching" on MLB.com or on the MLB At Bat app.

Both games were pretty well contested. Bedard really confounds me. The early going in his starts always seems to be rough and I get this feeling that he's never going to make it through four innings, no less five or six. Then, suddenly, it's the sixth, he's struck out a bunch of guys, let up a couple of hits, and generally limited the damage. Weird.

The Shields / Lester matchup is always fun to watch and Niemann really pitched well. He made Crawford look downright foolish.

Rays had Boston's number this week. Price was great yesterday.

Things fell apart for Valverde last night against Morneau. I guess he's human eh? Tough loss for Detroit as Cleveland gained a game.

Cliff Lee rights the ship for Philly and shows AZ they don't belong with the big dawgs, even if they pulled off the dramatic win vs Halladay the night before. It was a fluke.

Valverde sucks in non-save situations, Leyland is an idiot. I didn't watch the game though, so that's the extent of my analysis.

Yeah it was bases loaded in the 9th, 2 outs, and Morneau singled up the middle in a tie game. Can't win em all. I thought Valverde was going to get out of it because he did get the 2nd out with the bases juiced.

I was listening to the broadcast on my phone (Android ftw), pretty dam funny how the Detroit radio guys never say Valverde and always refer to him as "Papa Grande".

I can understand Leyland using him just to try and give Detroit the walkoff in the 10th, the guy is the saves leader. It didn't work out.

Baseball Tonight's Barry Larkin cracked me up last night. He referred to Texas bullpen trio of Uehara, Adams, and Feliz as the "United Nations Nasty Boys". lol

Fluke and the fact that Charlie should've yanked him after that first base hit in the 9th. I realize its Roy Halladay but its not like Madson and Bastardo weren't well rested or had been getting lit up lately.

Huuuuge win today and series for the Tigs. It's starting to feel like '06 again...130k attendance for the weekend, and I haven't seen such excitement from the players since then.

Also, I'm buying an Avila jersey. Where should I order it?

The Mets, what's left of them that is, ugh. It's a miracle and a testament to them that they haven't completely collapsed before now.

Not only that, but when all their players are healthy, there's still a fair amount of talent on that team.

All that said, the Phillies are just whupping them. 15-0 so far over the last game and a half.

I'm really proud of the unexpected help the Phils have gotten from their farm system this year -- Bastardo and Stutes, Worley and Mayberry. Awesome and key.

Worley is really proving himself. First and third, no outs in the 1st, and he pitched out of it with two strikeouts. Second and third, no outs in the 2nd, and he pitched out of that with THREE straight strikes out.

And John "Another Extra Base Hit" Mayberry now has 41 ribbies with less than 200 plate appearances.

Ahh, the Vanimal getting some off this AAA team...

Lol: Vance 1, Other Phillies 8, Mets 0.

And he's now retired 15 straight, with a career high 8 strikeouts.
