I wouldn't mind taking a flier on Hamels. The new rules are really going to make this a screwy market now - the team acquiring Hamels will no longer get the compensatory picks that they would have gotten had he signed elsewhere, meaning that teams will be willing to give up less for him.

Illitch wants a ring bad and he has the money. I don't necessarily think it's a great idea for the franchise, but he has money and is willing to spend. Can the Tigers handle the extra salary?
Also, go Rangers!
Yeah. If the rule hadn't changed, whoever (if they do) acquires Hamels would have gotten supplemental pick(s?) for if he didn't resign. You mean if he signs elsewhere after this season, then Detroit won't get picks (assuming they pick him up in a trade w/ Philly)?
Hamels would be a very solid #2 behind Verlander since Porcello and Scherzer are stinking up the joint this year. Fister has had some rough spots but seems to be coming back. Smyly is really Detroit's saving grace and a lefty to boot, however now he's on the DL. They could really use a dominant workhorse like Hamels.

Scherzer is a weird dude. By all accounts, he should have better results based on his peripherals. I think he will have a great second half. I'm totally comfortable with him as a #3. Fister's last start was encouraging as he's coming back from an injury. Hamels would basically replace Smyly (who actually just went on the DL [oh, you said that], Turner will take two of his starts) for the regular season, and I assume Porcello for the postseason. Porcello's and Smyly's numbers are very similar, but with Smyly being a rookie and probably up a little too soon (and exceeding my expectations), I think it makes sense for him to finish the season in Toledo, maybe watch his innings, and work on some stuff. But obviously that's only if somebody is acquired.
I kind of would rather have a decent 2B or corner outfielder, though. Not many quality 2Bs out there...but jeez, Upton is tempting to play right field.

Porcello/Smyly is certainly a discussion, but I'd still take Porcello. Porcello's WHIP/BABIP/everything is inflated by the terrible Tigers infield...but obviously that's not changing anytime soon. Smyly struggles going deep into starts, though. No doubt, Smyly has exceeded all expectations...and I'm definitely no Porcello lover. Finishing the season in Toledo would probably be good for Smyly's future though, and Porcello wouldn't really get anything from that. That will be the decision maker in the end. The fact that he's going to be out for probably two starts means that he may be the odd man out if the Tigers acquire someone before then anyways.Porcello has been horrible and Smyly is outshining him as a rookie. While Smyly barely edges him out in ERA+ (93 to 92), don't stop there with the comparison. Porcello is sporting a horrendous WHIP of 1.572 vs Smyly@1.273 (acceptable, especially for an AL rookie!). Furthermore, Smyly is blowing away Porcello in SO/BB ratio, 3.57 to 2.38. In fact, Smyly averages over 3 more K/9 with virtually the same walk rate.
My playoff rotation for Detroit would be: Verlander, Hamels, Fister (assuming he's back to form) with Smyly (assuming he isn't injured again), Scherzer and Porcello out of the pen. Hell, actually I wouldn't even bother with Porcello at.all. Even his RHB/LHB against splits are horrible (.318 and .319) and his sOPS+ splits are just as bad (126 and 123 where 100 is the average split OPS baseline) when guys hit for power on him. While he does have some bad luck with "seeing-eye-hits" due to a .354 BABIP (which can only improve and is contributing to his horrible WHIP), I still don't see him as a viable playoff option this year. Scherzer at least neutralizes righties very very very effectively (.227 against, 88 sOPS+), his issue is lefties hitting him even harder than Porcello (135 sOPS+!!!). Smyly is good vs both splits, slightly better against righties regarding extra base hits (112 sOPS+ vs 121) but a lower average against vs lefties (.250 vs .269).
Having a dominant lefty like Hamels would give them an advantage because not many other teams can neutralize lefties like Cole can. For example, he's sporting a .222 against lefties and a 79 sOPS+ which is phenomenal. If there is another starting lefty in the majors who is that good against lefties, I'd love to know who he is (Kershaw .192 but horrible 96 sOPS+ in a pitcher's park, CC .236/126, Buerle the closest@.236/78). Detroit will need a lefty against Cano/Granderson in NY, Hamilton with Texas. Even though LAA is all right-handed, Hamels is also almost as good vs RHB with .235/83 against.*
*splits are 2012 numbers, although Hamels career numbers only slightly rise from 2012
Whoever he ends up with will have to be the favorites to win (AL). NL, if the Dodgers or Giants get him then that'd be crazy since they are pitcher's parks and LAD just got Kemp/Ethier back. Pitt, not so much since their offense isn't there and a cold streak by McCutchen will be all she wrote.

It's really quite the sucker punch to the gut. One strike away from game over, you turn your back to home...10 seconds later you're down by a run.Happened in the 9th on a 2-2 count with 2 outs as well. Suck it LA.

I don't know who called that on the Padres side or if was just a split decision by Cabrera, but that sure was a ballsy play. A good throw would have got him, as the "out" call by the umpire obviously shows.
I told Hairston I was going to steal home and he didnt believe me, Cabrera said Sunday morning. He said, go ahead and try it.
Cabrera said he started plotting his steal of home during Jansens 11-pitch duel with Cameron Maybin, which ended with the center fielder striking out.
