So the Padres sweep the Cards (which is pretty amazing in itself, as the Cards usually own the Padres), but the D-Backs sweep the Dodgers so no ground is lost in the wild card. They've pretty much lost the chance to win the NL West, but if the Dodgers don't even make the wild card playoff game I have a feeling that there will be some rioting.

Well I wish the Cards would have gotten out of the series with LA with more than a split. We really needed to jump ahead a few games for the WC there.

Good news is we've got the Astros away, then the Cubs as home, then the Astros again at home while The Dodgers get to face the Nationals and the Reds and Milwaulee gets to face Pittsburg and the Nationals so there's still a chance for the Cards to put some distance between them and the other contenders.

BTW, Carpenter is back Friday pitching against the Cubs. Should be a good emotional boost finally have him back in action.. Hopefully it will be the spark we need to start getting hot!

I hate the Tigers but thank god they crushed the A's last night! I was watching the game last night and when Miggy came up to bat, I turned to my wife and said "watch this, bet he hits a grand slam!" lol

How about Melky? He's still able to win the batting title even though he's suspended! Makes no sense to me, what's the point of being suspended for cheating if it still make you eligible for rewards?

Soooo, AL MVP, Trout or Miggy? Old school or sabermetrics? Trout's defense gives him a WAR that is far superior to Miggy's. In fact, Trout's current WAR of 10.3 would be the first time any player had exceeded 10 in a season since Barry "Yes, I've got a big head" Bonds.

Miggy's, on one site, stands at 6.5. Huge difference.

On the one hand a run saved defensively counts the same as a run added offensively, no?

On the other, I have lingering doubts about the way(s) defensive WAR are calculated and weighted.

What say you?

I would give it to Trout right now, although of course I would like to see Miggy win it.

I'm sure Miggy will get it if he wins the Triple Crown, but I think he has a chance even if he doesn't.

As for the great WAR debate. I think there's a lot of things wrong with WAR. I think it overvalues both premium defensive positions and quality of defense. Miggy plays much better defense at 3rd than WAR/UZR give him credit for, but of course, it's easy for the analysts to confirm their biases about his defensive ability from glancing at defensive metrics. I don't think Miggy is good at third, but I do think that he is decidedly average. Obviously Trout is great in CF, but I don't think he's quite as good as UZR gives him credit for, either.

That said, Trout is having almost as good of a year offensively as Miguel, and his significant advantages in baserunning and defense push him easily over the top...although not to the magnitude that WAR suggests.

Excellent answer. Pretty much agreed all around. I'd love to see Miggy win the triple crown. Retrograd stats or not, that's a rare and wonderful feat. If you can lead your league in long ball power and batting average, you ARE the man!

Yup. And there was a pre-game ceremony, with the stands nearly full, wherein Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins presented Chipper with a painting of him at bat by some guy who's the official artist of MLB, and has been an artist for the Phillies for a couple of decades now (I never heard of him, but anyway.)

The fans saluted him. Chipper is HOF bound. I'm happy to see him going out still on top of his game, still raking. :thumbsup:

What's the difference between:

z - Clinched Playoff Berth and x - Clinched Division?

I know if you are x, that means you have the best record in your division and you are going to the play offs. Does z mean that even if you lose the remaining games in the season, you will still be in the play offs whether through having the division title or via wild card spot?

Yep, it means you've locked up a wild card spot at the very least.
