There's also still a little of the "rook, wait your turn" factor in baseball. I saw an interesting article that said the players and on-field staff were almost all for Carbrera, but that the front office types were almost all for Trout.

WAR on not, I think if Miggy wins the Triple Crown it will be almost impossible to deny him the MVP. Unless he's hit by a bus or falls off a cliff, Trout will get his eventually.

Agreed. Triple crown (if it happens) + playoffs should results in the MVP going to Miggy, but we shall see...

Trout is the modern day Joe Morgan in his best two years. If you compare his numbers to Morgan's 75/76 big red machine MVP numbers, they match up well Trout has more hits (home runs being the significant factor) and Morgan had almost double the walks (hence higher OPS) and a few more steals. This was the best player on the best team in the modern day era and no team has won back to back since the Big Red Machine.

Old timers will tell you how amazing those two years were that Joe Morgan put up and Trout is replicating it in his first year and already passed Morgan's 1976 WAR (9.5). He is .1 off Morgan's 1975 (10.8 vs 10.7) with 2 games to play.

Let's also put this in perspective:
In addition, he has now tied Willie Mays 2nd best season in WAR ( best was 10.9) and could make a run at Willie's best if he goes crazy in these last 2 games. Also, Trout's 10.7 ties Ted William's best offensive season and is .1 off Stan Musial's best. Barry Bonds never broke 10 WAR pre-roids and Pujols, Rickey Henderson, Ichiro, Ken Griffey Jr, McGwire/Canseco roided, Pete Rose, Chipper Jones, Tony Gwynn, George Brett, Mike Schmidt, Rod Carew, Joe Dimaggio have never gone over 10 in their career (only Mantle/Ruth/Gehrig have). Also, he's already passed ARod's best year (10.1) and Ty Cobb's 2nd best.

Sabremetrically/Statistically/ w/e you want to call it, you will probably never see a rookie with a season like this again in your lifetime.

Ok. Now, that game was very much how this season has been.

Shields-Complete game, 106 pitches, 15 SO, 2 hits. And we still lose.

Oh yeah. Attendance is 13.4k. 37% full.

Only positive is that the Bosox are beating the Yanks!

(Edit) darn it! I jinxed them. Now tied.

Those 15 Ks are a Rays record, I think.

Rangers completely falling apart. Need to fucking replace Ron Washington and his stupid ass decisions. Maybe he can go do some coke with Josh Hamilton in the post season.

Last day of the season and the Tigers could still play any of the other AL playoff teams in the first round. Go O's/A's!?

O's and A's are really coming down to the wire. More excitement after last year's!

Looks like Miggy has the triple crown locked up after last night, but it depends on if he plays today (which I doubt). An 0-5 vs 5-5 and he loses it. If I was Leyland, no way I'm playing him. However, Josh Hamilton could belt 2 HRs in the Texas/Oakland winner take all game. Leyland may give Miggy 2 at bats and just tell him to try to mash one, and then pull him. That way the batting title is still out of range of Trout, even considering an 0-2 vs a 5-5 day.

It'll also be neat to see if Trout can get one more stolen base to hit the 30HR/50steal mark which only 2 other men in the history of baseball have done.

Speaking of rookies, it looks like Bryce Harper has it wrapped up in the NL over Frazier in setting the most HRs for a teen rookie (22 vs Mel Ott's 18 in 1928). Frazier's time was limited by Votto's return (and his production dropped off). For Harper, after playing catcher for his entire life, his transition to outfield has been impressive. His arm and speed turned out to be a good fit.

I think Dickey and Price have the Cy Youngs locked up too. NL MVP will probably be Posey, the guy is leading Braun and McCutchen in WAR and OPS+ at freaking catcher on a team that nobody picked to win the division (except me!). That is just phenomenal and what a comeback for a guy whose career could have very well ended after getting destroyed last year in that play at the plate.

I'll be shocked if Miggy doesn't start today and at least get a few at bats.

I also maintain that I will be shocked if Price gets the ALCY.

There are a couple things to consider, mainly the 20-5 record of Price vs 17-8 of JV and the fact that Price's ERA is slightly lower. It will come down to traditional voters vs the sabermetric voters (who did give 13 game winner Felix the award a couple years ago). I think JV is deserving, don't get me wrong b/c he leads Price in every other sabremetric category including WAR and ERA+. However, he had a dropoff from last year's numbers and Price is having the best year of his career. The MVP + CY last year isn't doing JV any favors either, some voters may want to spread the love. So there's a chance that Price takes the award b/c of his stellar W/L + ERA numbers. Though it seems that the CY voters are voting smarter so you may be right that JV takes it.

A's and texas is a wild one!!!

It's amazing to me that the A's, who've been featuring an all rookie rotation of late, are even in the same convo with the stacked Rangers, let alone poised to tie them.

Poised to take the division by a game.

Yup! Rangers down 3, with 6 outs to go. If the A's pull off the sweep, it will cap off their miracle year.

Wow 12 runs wtf. Congrats to the Athletics, what a finish for a team with such a small market cap. Only in baseball...

does Washington get canned if Texas loses today and tomorrow's WC game?
With two pennants in his back pocket, I doubt it. Still a crazy, improbable collapse somewhat reminiscent of the BoSox missing the playoffs last season.

Can the A's afford more cheap bubbly to celebrate a real achievement?

FWIW the WC games are on Friday.
