Think I have to realize my 99% loss on OCZ this year. Hopefully I make up the difference in other areas.

Leaving my stuff alone. Dividends alone should be yielding around 6.5%. I'll take it.

Speaking of dividend stocks, what are some good ones this year? Mostly blue chips?

MORL (2xREIT) exchange traded UBS note paying ~20%

Of course reits have been taking a beating with the Fed tapering and anticipation thereof. Mortgage reits primary make money on yield spreads (leveraged bets on agency paper), so the higher the cost to borrower the lower the yields. BUT they have been hammered by 50% since topping out in 2013 and once the tapering is done and rates stabilize things will be good again.

Furthermore....if you are buying to hold and dont mind taking a ride down to 8% while waiting for the ride back to 15%, etc., then stock price wont matter (you never buy these on margin).

Just to move the stocks here from my post in the 2013 thread. Here are 10 stocks that Barrons said were their picks for 2014. I bought about $15K each and here is the results so far.

Barrick Gold 16.05 / 18.15
Canadian Natural Resources 32.63 / 32.93
Citigroup 52.05 / 53.40
Deere 87.32 / 90.66
General Motors 40.85 / 39.57
Intel 24.95 / 25.78
MetLife 51.33 / 53.81
Nestlé 73.72 / 73.37
Simon Properties 152.47 / 153.95
US Airways Group (AAL) 25.2 / 26.54

Next month I'll do a more detailed post with the % return and I will factor in dividends paid as they happen. I automatically reinvest dividends in my account, so they compound. Warren Buffet actually does not recommend doing that as he prefers to make a separate purchasing decision each time.

I will also compare the returns to an equal amount in a market ETF.

What are your guys plans? I think this is the year I start investing but I feel the market is too bullish... will it go back?

You might want to dollar cost average. Plan to put in some money every month.

Certainly we are due for some correction, but the catalyst for one isn't obvious anymore (it was supposed to be tapering) and we are still in a TINA (There is No Alternative) environment. Bonds are going to lose value from rising interest rates and CDs and savings are still paying very little.

Since emerging markets sat out last years gains I am expecting them to see gains this year. I have moved a good portion over to dividend paying emerging markets ETFs like EDIV and DEM, which pay dividends far greater than SDY (S&P 500 dividend ETF). We shall see if I am right.

Considering that most managed funds fail to outperform index funds yet have a substantially higher cost ratio, and that it is virtually impossible to time the market, I will do the same thing I do every year. Make an investment in a series of ultra low cost index funds that allow me to diversify my position. I will not time the market and don't play psychological buy/sell games. Check back with me in 20 years and I'll be ahead of 95% of you guys.

I am trying to figure out when to buy the Thai ETF (THD). I bought it last crisis in Thailand and ended up with an almost 50% gain once it sorted itself out. My main concern this time is that that king is not getting any younger and his health is not so great. His son is nowhere near as popular as he is. So there is a decent chance that the crisis could even get worse.

Very irritated I got hit with a free ride violation as AMD jumped up 50c since it occurred. Wellstrade indicated I had the cash and my trade settled when it didn't. I'll be back in March with a vengeance!

What are your thoughts on FTNT?

I'm thinking that with the recent publicity on lapses in tech security, that this niche will go up, and FTNT seems poised. Maybe a buyout candidate?

chinese solars are ridiculously overpriced

time to short those puppies

Be careful which one you pick. Some are better than others. Or you can just short TAN if you don't like solars in general.

*yawn* I'll keep sticking to my boring dividend stocks JNJ, CVX, KO, WFC, MSFT sprinkled with index funds like VTI, VWO, VEXPX and my speculative bets in RGR, TSLA, TWTR. Actually don't consider RGR speculative anymore, they are highly profitable and even has a 3.1% dividend.

I think and hope we'll finally see emerging markets get back on track so I'm putting a lot more into VWO this year.

It is probably as poised to grow big as CSCO stock was in mid 2000 with the whole Internet being the future.

AMD is on fire today. Very irritated I'm out nearly $1 since having a free ride violation.

Last BitCoin bubble, AMD nearly doubled in price. How much of that was actually due to the BitCoin bubble, if any at all? Is AMD actually making any money off inflated GPU prices since they don't own their own fabs? (They can't just mass produce more cards to take advantage of this)

Right now AMD stock has been rising quickly again, and go figure... we just had another BitCoin bubble. I'm trying to figure when I should think about doing some profit taking this time around. Jan 21st is their earnings call which is now a week away.
