not really a crisis, as they have so little to lose now. just keep plugging in new motors and suck up the penalties.

he damaged the uprights when he went off

The penalties are 10 places or start from the pits, depending.

I know he damaged the wing, I watched the race.

I don't know why they didn't just change it at the next pit stop, or wait until they were in a better window.

He did not have any other scheduled stops after that. Also they probably did not want a repeat of what happened to Alonso where the front wing broke off and took him out of the race.

I remember that. I think it was at Sepang a year or two ago. Alonso was running in the top 3, he made a brilliant start and had really good pace but damaged his front wing at the start of the race. Team called him in but he stayed out and as he was running down the front straight past the pit lane the wing came off and he crashed.

He only said he had a little less front grip.

I think if he stays out 4 or 5 more laps, he has a better chance of getting around Bottas with tires with 4 or 5 less laps on them.

When he needed a 4th stop, they should have changed strategy.

I think Ferrari thought it didn't matter and he'd move right on back up.

Anyway, it's good to see Ferrari as the best of the rest.

Except that wing was clearly trashed. It was obviously not going to last.

Rosberg won, but I really think that was only because of Vettel's great start where he got in front of Hamilton and let Rosberg build a gap.

Anyway, another boring race with the Mercedes team 30 to 45 seconds ahead of the rest, and almost the whole field lapped...

I watched it after lunch, and actually fell asleep, around the time that Maldonado retired and Hamilton built the gap on two-stopping Vettel.
Two-stopping Vettel was probably a mistake, but then Hamilton was fast enough to make the undercut work.
The only way that there could have been a chance, would be to aggressively three-stop Vettel, and hope that the two-stop response from Hamilton would ultimately be slower.

It was also pretty awful to watch STR fall back at the start, with their car setup for qualy, but too slow on the straights as a result. That did explain why they were so far up the grid though.

But yeah, for me quite literally a snore-fest, but that's Barcelona for you...

I really don't get why he keeps flapping his yap. They have to get that every time he comes out bitching a moaning about taking their toys and going home people just loose more and more respect for the team.

I think the exact opposite. What is the point of even having a racing team if the people providing your engine can't do a thing to be competitive. He wants to win races. Renault haven't shown they have the capacity to make an engine that can do that. The two teams using their engines are crap. I think it is only two teams (Redbull and Redbull in Italian). Neither are really competitive.

I think Hamilton would have had a tough time getting past Rosberg just like he did with Vettel. The problem is that long sweeping turn coming onto the front straight. He could close up behind Vettel leading up to that corner but you need front end grip to get around that corner which is provided by airflow over the front wing which is disturbed greatly when following another car. It's a fast sweeper and you need to be in clean air to get a good run down the front straight and this is why passing Vettel on track was near impossible for Hamilton.

Barcelona has always been a boring race but I thought this one wasn't as bad as others I've seen at that track.

Hamilton could have passed Rosberg the same way he passed Vettel, imo.

In order for that to work, Hamilton needed to stay close to Rosberg, and the chance of that was gone when Vettel got in front of Hamilton.

Absent team orders, of course.

It was pretty sad to hear the team tell Hamilton not to try to catch Rosberg.

Hearing things like that makes me want to change the channel.

Yeah. I hate that. I get the team aspect and being safe in your position, but it just drains the competition out of it. You aren't sharing the championship at the end of the season.

Interesting read Googling for more info but this seems very interesting. Both Ferrari and Red Bull were made more than the championship winning team. Yeah, this is an issue.

Strategy Group plans return of refuelling, free tyre choice and cars ‘five seconds quicker’

The Strategy Group members have debated a number of levers aimed at improving the show. An initial series of measures has been voted:

For 2016:

Free choice of the two dry tyre compounds (out of four) that each team can use during the race weekend

For 2017:

Faster cars: five to six seconds drop in lap times through aerodynamic rules evolution, wider tyres and reduction of car weight
Reintroduction of refuelling (maintaining a maximum race fuel allowance)
Higher revving engines and increased noise
More aggressive looks

reducing car weight would be undoing the positive moves of the last couple years, as far as diminishing the disadvantage someone larger than a dwarf suffers as a driver.

refuelling??? gtfo. seriously, the last thing f1 needs is for races to be over at the 1/4 distance mark again, just like they were for the 1994-2009. by the way, this can only drive costs way, way up.

higher revs and noise...meh. most fans don't mind the current engines that have been developed at great expense, and if they think that's f1's biggest problem then the whole thing is hopeless.

more aggressive looks, yet almost totally identical to each other.

this meeting involved only the usual power players - fia, bernie, ferrari, mclaren, mb and red bull. anyone else might have been there but only to fill a seat. they are actively driving anyone short of $300 million/year out of the game. the result is public confirmation of what everyone already knew: the powerful and wealthy conspire to become more powerful and wealthy.

i've loved f1 since seeing a john player special flying around the streets of detroit. i've barely missed a race since then, even when it's boring, or stupid, or corrupt. but now it's all of those things all the time, and i am content to watch them rearrange deck chairs on the titanic.
