Strategy Group plans return of refuelling, free tyre choice and cars ‘five seconds quicker’
The Strategy Group members have debated a number of levers aimed at improving the show. An initial series of measures has been voted:
For 2016:
Free choice of the two dry tyre compounds (out of four) that each team can use during the race weekend
For 2017:
Faster cars: five to six seconds drop in lap times through aerodynamic rules evolution, wider tyres and reduction of car weight
Reintroduction of refuelling (maintaining a maximum race fuel allowance)
Higher revving engines and increased noise
More aggressive looks
reducing car weight would be undoing the positive moves of the last couple years, as far as diminishing the disadvantage someone larger than a dwarf suffers as a driver.
refuelling??? gtfo. seriously, the last thing f1 needs is for races to be over at the 1/4 distance mark again, just like they were for the 1994-2009. by the way, this can only drive costs way, way up.
higher revs and noise...meh. most fans don't mind the current engines that have been developed at great expense, and if they think that's f1's biggest problem then the whole thing is hopeless.
more aggressive looks, yet almost totally identical to each other.
this meeting involved only the usual power players - fia, bernie, ferrari, mclaren, mb and red bull. anyone else might have been there but only to fill a seat. they are actively driving anyone short of $300 million/year out of the game. the result is public confirmation of what everyone already knew: the powerful and wealthy conspire to become more powerful and wealthy.
i've loved f1 since seeing a john player special flying around the streets of detroit. i've barely missed a race since then, even when it's boring, or stupid, or corrupt. but now it's all of those things all the time, and i am content to watch them rearrange deck chairs on the titanic.
