Sold a bunch of my fidelity SPY mutual fund yesterday in my taxable account to take the loss for taxes. I want to switch to VTI anyway. I was bummed when it opened 1+% up (of course …) but looks like it’s back to the usual already.

I-bonds are paying nearly 10% now. Hard to pass on those. At the very least even if they aren't keeping up with "real" inflation, I'm not losing money elsewhere.

Coinbase down another 16% after hours 🤣 worth about a fifth of its IPO price. May it continue to die a slow death.

Considering the amount of inflation we're getting, I decided to take a look at the fed's balance sheet. It spiked sharply back in 2020 when we had that mini-recession from around $4T to $7T and another $2T since then.

But there's something very odd about the curve over the past 2 years. It's very wavy (like gravy) but also very regular. The slope is increasing at a decreasing rate during that time but the undulations are so regular, it almost looks like a sine wave. I thought that was very curious. It's almost as if they were experimenting with adding and then removing liquidity but with a net increase.

Raising interest rates is good for snuffing out inflation but I always thought that you also needed to reduce the money supply by selling assets and sucking out some of that liquidity. Maybe that's what they're gearing up for?

Lots of interesting movement with silver too, being moved out of the vault etc.. I don't understand exactly the ramifications behind it but there's a guy on the wallstreetsilver sub that does analysis. It's like the fed is preparing for the system to blow.

Some energy stocks did fine earlier today like Shell, Devon, Chevron and Exxon. All four gained 1 to 2 points from the open. But currently all four are sinking (edit: at the time of this post) due to midday reports about a rise in oil inventories.

So you would've had to day trade them in the morning and get out in time. I missed their morning rise and haven't bought any of them today so far. Haven't bought any stocks since April 21st, wimping out.

Goldman Sachs says they were wrong about Coinbase. Even I got fooled.

Looks like crypto was a fad after all.

Are all the markets really down right now? Seems to be this way for coins. Is this a recession happening?

As far as "recession", it depends. A recession is two consecutive declines in GDP growth, and we already had one decline at the last reading. So yes, we will get a Fed induced recession on a technical basis.

The real question is how much will it hurt going forward after that. We had a prolonged downturn after the crash of 2008, culminating in the foreclosure crises that ended around 2012....the "Great Recession".

Fact is, prices got carried away and the Fed is doing the right thing by taking money out of economy to tame prices (ie, "price stability'). Inflation is worse than temporary recession.

Pretty sure we are heading into a huge recession, if it's not already happening now, it's coming one way or the other and is inevitable at this point.

Two consecutive quarters of GDP declines is the media's quick and dirty estimation of recessions. Actual recession definition is not that simple. It is the Business Cycle Dating Committee of the The National Bureau of Economic Research that makes the official call.
Q: Why doesn't the committee accept the two-quarter definition?

A: There are several reasons. First, we do not identify economic activity solely with real GDP, but consider a range of indicators. Second, we consider the depth of the decline in economic activity. The NBER definition includes the phrase, “a significant decline in economic activity." Thus real GDP could decline by relatively small amounts in two consecutive quarters without warranting the determination that a peak had occurred. Third, our main focus is on the monthly chronology, which requires consideration of monthly indicators. Fourth, in examining the behavior of production on a quarterly basis, where real GDP data are available, we give equal weight to real GDI. The difference between GDP and GDI—called the “statistical discrepancy”—was particularly important in the recessions of 2001 and 2007–2009.
The key difference to me is GDI (gross domestic income) takes into account wages. If GDP slightly declines for a short period but wages significantly increase, they might not call it a recession.

Why does etrade show AMC at <$11 when yahoo shows it at >$13 ?
The red circle in the image below is why. You need to enable Level 2 quotes and use the platform that E*Trade wants you to use, see the link below.

I prefer the word "adorable" fucking scam.

Welcome to Wall Street. 🧱
Even if they were delaying my data on my portfolio, as soon as I hit the trade button they should have been giving me real-time quotes for selling my shares. Missed out on 35% profit.

Not as bad as putting money into a meme stock.
I threw in $2K when I saw it was about to touch it's 52-week low anticipating a bounce. Got 200@10.02 yesterday (AKA at the very bottom). When I saw it up 20% I figured not many stocks go up more than that in a day so I should probably just sell it. By the time I logged into my etrade account it was at $13.30 like you see in the screenshot. I don't give a shit about meme stocks.

This is some scammy bullshit is what it is.
