That is normal.

Ok, I enabled the SATA RAID in bios and IAA installs.

This is really a tough question, because the AOpen has none of the funny memory shifting Abit is doing on the IC7 series - what you set is what you get - even if the AOpen is picky about memory. For a FULL-featured board I would probably choose the AOpen AX4C-MAX over the IC7-G, since it is now about $190 with a $20 rebate AND AOpen has been VERY responsive in fixing a couple of issues we found with a new BIOS version - UNLESS you have to have CSA LAN then Abit is your choice. On the other hand, the Abit IC7 really is an excellent value at $150 - and the same board as the IC7-G without a few features. It does seem to overclock a little better than the AOpen - but it is a close race. At the same OC, same specs, same memory, the AOpen tests faster, but that could change with a new Abit BIOS. Certainly the dog of the Canterwood boards we have seen so far is the Asus - no Intel SATA RAID, a $250 price tage, NO CSA LAN, and overclocking that is locked out in th e165 to 199 range.

This may change by next weekend as I have an MSI on the way to test. I generally wouldn't even bother to look at an MSI board, but after Jimmy Tang's excellent review at Hardware Zone, bigtoe and I decided to do a joint review of the MSI. MSI seems to have pulled out all the stops on this one and I admire companies who "break the rules" - particularly Intel's rules. Price wise, feature-wise and performance wise this MAY be the one - although I have to say recommending an MSI, if it pans out, will probably make me choke.

Just read an interesting post over on hardocp's forums from an MSI canterwood user. The northbridge fan has those 4 led's in it.. and well according to this guy one or more of those leds kind of exploded with the fragments of one landing on, and subsequently burning, his southbridge chipset. Kinda makes ya think twice. If its a legit story in the first place I'm sure its probably/hopefully a fluke thing.

Anyone think I can stick my 1.8A C1 (SL6LA) in the IC7 or should I go with the 865PE MSI board? Or would I be the guinea pig if I got the IC7?

Thanks

We think a lot alike. The Aopen looks great to me, but I don't need all the stuff on the MAX board. I guess $190 after rebate is fair, but I would be paying for a lot of stuff I don't need. I need an AX4C- "MIN". The IC7 for $150 is getting there in price. The mem timing thing is an issue, but not all that huge I guess.

Yeah, Asus is a dog this time around. IMHO, it's not the first time, but never quite this bad.

MSI...sigh...I've had a few MSI boards and hated every one of them. Rumor has it the MSI 875/865 is a great board though. I'm this ---->__<---- close to ordering the MSI 865PE for $105. The price is hard to argue with. The CoreCell tech is also interesting to me since I am a quiet PC kind of guy. I've bashed MSI more than once around here for poor overclocking, lackluster performing boards, but things can change.

Really? I had a BX Master and a KT3 Ultra and both were great IMO. Granted my overclocking days are behind me now so I don't care about that or whether my Sandra score is 4820 instead of 4800, but they were both stable boards with nice features at a price that was hard to argue with.

Ah, the BX-Master. I remember it well. The fabulous board that would not go above 122 FSB with a Voodoo 3 card. An Aureal Vortex 2 card would not work in any PCI slot other than PCI 1 (not recognized by the BIOS!) I was lucky enough to own both cards. Others had the same problems. I got a refund and bought an Asus P3B-F. 133 FSB and Vortex 2 in any slot right out of the gate.

Then there was the MSI 815E that would not run stable @ 133 FSB no matter what I did with it. Onboard sound stopped working after a month or so.

That being said....
MSI, THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE! If I buy the 865PE and it is a POS....well, I don't know what I'll do. Continue my MSI bashing I guess . If it is a good board, I'll be nice

Now you're making me nostalgic for the BX days. I think I got more mileage out of my BH6 than anything I've ever owned.

Very good news, but wow. What bunch of whiny little turds on that forum and elsewhere. This board has been out for all of a week, and people are going to "refuse delivery" because one issue wasn't fixed in a matter of hours. If this was any other company besides Abit or maybe Epox, there wouldn't be a rush for a fix and they certainly wouldn't be in contact with the users. They'd issue a fix when they were damn good and ready.

I think I enjoyed the part where the whiny turd expected a reply on a weekend. hehe..

I agree. Thank God it's not Asus or you would never get an update/fix.

I was following the whole thing all weekend and I expected that the ABIT folk would address the issue as they did. Prometheus did a great job in getting all the facts laid on the table, but it was kind of stupid to see people following up with nothing besides bitchsquealing.

I'm glad I ordered my IC7 before I knew of the memory timing issues, I wasn't unhappy when I found out about it because it really didn't effect the board negatively, and I'm glad that ABIT was so quick in it's response (which really tells you how great they are). I feel like I made the right choice, now if only tomorrow could come sooner...

here's an example of how the screwed up NB strap can effect performance on a IC7.....

3.4ghz 179fsb XMS3200LL 1:1: 3dmark2001

NBS533 (set 2-2-2-5 / cpuz 2.0-2-2-5) = 14320
NBS667 (set 2-2-2-5 / cpuz 2.0-2-2-5) = 14167
NBS800 (set 2-2-2-5 / cpuz 2.5-2-2-6) = 13985

keep the NBS on 533

*P4G8X-D granite bay (cas 2-2-2-6) = 14334

THUGS - theres a new bios feature in 1.1 called Performance Mode in Advanced Chipset Features. Ultra and Turbo wont work for me, but Fast is (I'm running dual HyperX PC3500 @ DDR402 with 2-5-2-2 @ 2.7V), and my Sandra memory and Aida32 scores went up with it on.
