It's finally up and running:

Abit IC7-G, P4 3.0GHz Canterwood, w. ThermalRight SLK-900 w. Pabst 92mm
2 x 512Mb Corsair XMS3500
Gigabyte ATi Radeon 9800 Pro
2 x Seagate 80G SATA in Raid0

It's running like a wild horse. The first 3DMark2001 I did was 17987, at bog standard Bios (13) settings. At first I was carzy happy with the performance, but after a bit of fiddling around, I am starting to see a few limitations. I don't know if it is the Bios, my setup, or just....

1. I can not get into WinXP unless I have the DRAM timings 2-5-2-3.
2. I cannot increase the FSB, not even to 205 without crashes during bootup.
3. I can only boot with the performance setting in the Adv. Chipset Features set to Auto.

I have absolutely nothing else in the rig, except for a floppy drive, and I have even disabled sound.

hmmmmmmmmm

I wouldn't expect more if you keep those timings.....Change your latency to 2.5,7,3,3 and voltage to 2.7-2.8 and that should get you to 220-230 fsb. I could get 230fsb with those timings at 2.8v on the mem and default CPU voltage.

No it doesn't, it only has firewire

I don't know about the 3.0ghz, but I'm running a 2.4C at 270 mhz right now. I have geil 3500 Ultra, so I'm sure you can get better timings on the memory, but still, its better to have a higher FSB, and a faster CPU, than tighter timings.

Ratio 5:4
FSB 270
Vcore 1.625 <<<<<<< Is that too high? I'm not quite sure how much voltage is too much. 1.6 doesn't quite give it enough though
VDimm 2.8.
AGP/PCI locked ratio

Cas 2, 6-3-3

I've tried 1:1 ratio, but you can't overclock far enough to make up the gain in efficency.

Its showing 46 degrees idle, 55 under load, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. I can turn on the computer after hours of being turned off, and it will be 45 degrees. I'm using a stock intel heatsink, which is fairly good. I think the motherboard isn't reporting the temperature correctly, but I'm not sure.

I've decided to buy this board (by the end of the summer) over the Asus P4C800 but I have some questions.

1. Is it a good idea to hook up the fans to the mobo or directly off the PSU? I haven't chosen fans yet so I don't know if they'll draw a lot of power or not.
2. Will Geil Golden Dragon ram work or should I go with Corsair xms?

I'm new to building PCs but I want to get into OCing. I'm not going to go nuts with it but I want to mess around with it a little. Thanks.

1. Connect all fans besides the CPU, NB, and PSU to the PSU connectors. Try to keep from using the MB fan headers, I've heard it can short out your board some times.
2. Geil = crap. Get Kingston HyperX PC3500

This may have been discussed in other threads, but what exactly does the "performance" setting do? seems pretty vague to me... I would assume it just ramps the voltage to everything, but I want to be sure before I start playing with it...

Bug in bios v13- when open my DRAM voltage window in the basic features window, the bios hard-freezes.

Ok, well thanks for the help on the first question. So if I connect them to the PSU then I should get a fan speed controller or fans that comes with a temp probe? I'm pretty much set on getting either corsair or geil memory.

Don't know about anyone else, and I don't recall reading this in any of the posts, but the IC7 that I installed today constantly shows a System Idle Process value of 50%.

Unfortunately when I try to run any Distributed Computing programs which are notorious for maxing out the CPU usage, I only show a usage of 50% on Windows XP, and System Idle Process stays at 50%. Changing the priority in task manager has no effect of this value.

I'm sure that I'm missing something and would appreciate any explanation that anyone can offer.

Bug in bios v13- when open my DRAM voltage window in the basic features window, the bios hard-freezes.

I had the same problem.
Here's the fix-
Go into the BIOs and "Load Failsafe Defaults"
After that the Vdimm options should return.
I neglected to follow the flashing instructions, after flashing Abit recommends that you power down, unplug and move the CMOS jumper to clear the CMOS.
I had a feeling this was what was causing my problem but figured I'd try the above before opening my case-and it worked.

No way, do you have Geil in yours right now? How would you know?

The Geil gets better speeds, I would know. I'm running, as I'm typing this, Geil Ultra Platinum 3500 @ 270 FSB, 5:4. The timings are 2-6-3-3. Considering the price differance, I'll give up 1 or 2 clock cycles. The timings you MIGHT get from Kingston COULD be a little faster, but really, is it worth the money? And if your going to pay extra for ram, just go higher and get some XMS.

I'm happy with my Geil, and I'm going to buy 2 sticks of 512 asap to increase my total ram.

Well, I tried that, and it worked... I had trouble convincing windows to launch after that, but it worked
Thanks... mabye this is why Ive had so much trouble overclocking since i got the v13 bios.

I still love this board

Have gotten up to 275 FSB (3.3 ghz) with 1.625 VCore, 2-6-3-3 ram timings, Geil Ultra Platinum, Retail heatsink. Has anyone gotten higher than this with stability and air cooling? If so what are your settings?

Well, you havent been around these forums long enough to know or seen this review (Geil used 7ns chips (DDR266) in their DDR400)

Yeah, I read that review before I bought the Geil, but that was DDR 400, and the cheap one at that. I went with the DDR 433, and the higher end stuff. The higher end Geil is like Kingston, maybe even (gasp) a bit below Corsair, for much less money. I haven't had any problems, and I haven't seen anyone around here having any problems, but so many people tell others to stay away from it, when its a pretty good deal. For what he was talking about, a little overclocking (which is REALLY easy with the IC7, you can get 3.0 ghz on standard voltage, with any ram, out of a 2.4), I recommend it.

On the other hand, I have no Corsair, Crucial, or Kingston DDR to compare it to, and no money to buy some.

Anyone have the Maxtor SATA drive? Have you hooked it up to your IC7-G? I'm currently running this with a Geforce 2, and a 40 gig 5400 rpm hard drive. They are really bad bottlenecks, and I'm wondering which to replace first. I'm going to get a 9500 Pro, and a Maxtor SATA, $175 and $125 each. Which will speed of my system more?

For the On board audio of the NON-G version, IC7;

I know on ABIT's website it says 6 Channel, but does this mean Dolby Digital 5.1, or some sort of proprietary ABIT software emulation? I ask, as I would use the Optical Toslink output, and hook up the sound output into my Denon Home Theater Receiver which has DD 5.1 and also DTS 5.1 Surround Sound.

BUT, I also, have the original SB Live card with the Digital I/O riser output card. Would you just recommend to use that? Anyone know of any reviews of the onboard IC7/g audio?

Thanks

so far, I really like 1.3... sandra mem bandwidth went up around avg. 50 points... and bf1942 hasn't crashed yet knock on wood...

no reformat is necessary for sata raid0 setups with this one either!

I am also able to perform the same overclock with less mem voltage and cpu voltage...

I think I've decided to go with this board. My question is this: go with (4) 256mb 222 Mushkin memory for $178 or (2) 512mb 222 Mushkin for $270? I probably will never go past 1GB of ram for the lifetime of this mobo, but I was wondering if there is performance hit (if so, how much) when going with more dimms.

I would go with 2 chips. And as far as mem goes, Kingston or Corsair will give more reliable timings.

Guys,

I have got the rig up and running (see above) and all is cool. All except my Sony IDE DVD-RW! It reads CDs and DVDs just fine, but when it comes to burning it completely goes bonk (BSOD).

1. What's the deal with the new Intel Application Accelerator driver (3.0)? Does it cover all the IDEs on board, SATA and IDEs? And, can you turn "BusMastering" off a particular drive? According to discussion forums for the Sony DVD drive, that may help me out.

2. I have set the jumper on "PS2-PWR1" as 2/3, so I can turn on the PC by moving my mouse or pressing a key, but it doesn't work?????

Another happy IC7 customer here.

IC7 with a 2.4C @ 250FSB and 3000MHZ @ default vcore.
2X512 XMS 3200LL @ Cas 2-5-2-2 running @2.8v and a 5/4 ratio = DDR400
Single SATA WD Raptor
Swifty with a 92mm Sunon. (I saw someone post here somewhere asking aout a YSTech TMD fan. I tried one and it worked well but it was NOISY. )
I've had no issues and haven't even flashed the bios yet.
