OK so I just got my IS7 configured as in sig. And loaded all my porgrams - Win XP, Office, drivers, etc. Network up and running, surfing and then I notice that my WD is not in "My computer" folder. So I shut down to check out my cables and reboot. Then BOTH drives cannot be recognized by the BIOS. It reboots automatically, then again and again. OK so I reflash the BIOS to latest and start from scratch. Reformat HDD. load windows, AS soon as I load the Intel chipset drivers it starts up on me again. Reboots itself, says it want to restart Windows setup! I'm at a loss.

Update: I removed the WD hard drive and reloaded Win XP SP1 and seem sot be working stable. I gues it didn't like the WD for some reason. ANyone have a clue as to why?

You're not using the WD drive this time? I don't know why it wouldn't like it since it's an IDE right, like the other? Maybe you should try to change the master/slave combo or cable select method, or put one on each IDE port as the master (if you haven't). Could be something wrong with the WD HD if you still have the problem after all that.

"and seem sot be working stable"
I take it you mean "and seem TO be working stable"?

Yes I'm stable fat fingered that one. Yes thanks. I tried to load windows onto the WD withought the IBM connected and it wouldn't load. It's a refurbished HDD and so it leads me to believe it's defective. Looks like Newegg for a new second HDD for me since I'm doing video editing and need the space.

BTW I love this mobo!!!!!!!! And the combo with the 9600 pro is outstanding IMHO. Of course I upgraded from a KT7 with a 700 MHz T-Bird w/ Geforce2.

If you're into video editing you should try you a Raptor and put those SATA ports to use.

I never buy anything "mechanical" anymore that's refurb. No HD's, CDRW, CDROM, scanner, printer, tape drive, etc. I'd only trust memory, CPU, mobo or cards as refurb.....and not very much at that. Sometimes getting a refurb of a new model mobo can be better than the retail vendor version since it has probably "had all its bugs worked out". (I'm not exactly sure how one can "refurb" a CPU or memory! I guess maybe they straighten some bent pins on the CPU and fix a cold solder joint on a memory module).

How come you haven't tried to O'clock your CPU? I'd be interested in knowing what it can do with the new BIOS 1.6.

I'll definitely be going SATA with the next drive. The WD was new - had it replaced from WD froma previous failure - haven't used it in approx 6 months - assumed it was a good replacement. Bad move on my part.

I've never OC'ed before and I guess I'm scared to damage anything. I've read a ton on Oc'ing, but never had the nerve to try it. I see a lot people getting pretty good results with the same config I have.

I guess here's my knowledge base:

a) Know how to set FSB, Voltages for RAM and RAM timings, and cooling effects
b) Do not know about AGP / PCI clock, DRAM ratio, AGP ratio <<scares me that I will fry the 9600 or something else

You can leave your PCI/AGP divider as is @ 33/66mhz and not worry about them getting overclocked. You can also leave your AGP voltage as is for starters, and at default voltage for the CPU many are getting over 3ghz for the 2.4C. You can safely go to 1.6v for the CPU, and I've seen some go much higher although that can shorten its life and cause it to run hotter. As for the memory, it seems to be "undervolted" (if there's such a word) from the factory. I believe DDR is supposed to be 2.5v, but most memory manufacturers are now setting their "Default" voltage spec at at least 2.6v and you usually have to increase that to 2.8v and even higher to get the full potential from it. However even at default voltages for all you should be able to O'clock the CPU some. The memory is usually the weak point there and why it has to be bumped a bit. Some memory manufacturers are warrantying their memory to 3.1v. On the IS7/IC7 the most you can go is 2.8v, that's why there is a voltage mod for it to take it beyond 3.1v.

WD had single drive and master jumper settings. Maybe you forgot to remove the jumper when you took the IBM off. Just a thought.

the IS7 has serious temp reporting issues
i have an is7-e and a 2.4c and 2 512 ocz 3200 ram

i just replaced the default retail heatsink with a thermaltake spark7+
i mounted one of my digi doc thermal temperature readers within a centimeter of the cpu

the winbond reports my cpu idling around 47 degrees celsius while the digi doc reads a cool 31-32 degrees c
on avg the motherboard reports an avg of 15 degrees higher

under full load doing prime 95 torture tests
winbond 58c
digi doc reports 41c and thats not at even the full speed 6000 rpm set
at full speed it reports between 39-40c during the tortur tests

i would never run for a long time at full speed cause the fan sounds like a hair dryer

but for the rest of you who think ur running hot the is7 reports its temps much higher than they should be

Ok I OC'd to 240 X 12 = 2880 I started to run Prime 95 and my CPU temps went up to 69 ish so I shut down the torture test. This was monitored by the supplied Winbond Hardware Doctor with the mobo.

I'm idling at around 52 with stock HSF.

Too hot???

Well I replaced the processor (a pin came off, don't ask) and the motherboard and I'm having the same problems as before, so it must be the RAM. I believe it's even causing problems with BIOS v1.6 as the "BIOS Checksum error" warnings I was getting with the original IS7 and BIOS 1.6 have returned.

Looks like I'm stuck at 3.1GHz for the moment. Not that I'm complaining of course; 700MHz is a good increase. Just not as good as it could possibly be.

"the winbond reports my cpu idling around 47 degrees celsius while the digi doc reads a cool 31-32 degrees c"

The internal diode temperature of the cpu is probably much higher than any external probe would read, based on Intel's design specs for the intenral diode temps Abit's numbers seem likely to be correct to me.

just got a SATA adapter to hook up to my IDE HDD to the SATA 1

I have DVD drive on the IDE1 and a CDRW on IDE2 , both set Master
Windows boots fine

Can't get both CD drives detected, it's either one or the other depending on BIOS settings

the BIOS detects the HDD as a IDE device, even thought it's on the SATA cable /channel!

I want my HDD and CD drives....
= (

HELP!??

OK here are my SiSandra scores with my P4 2.4c @ 2.88:

CPU Multi : 13531/21181
CPU arith: 6682/2327/5860

Are those decent scores? I have no clue.

FWIW, you can compare them to my P4B533, 1.8ghz @2.42ghz (512k cache). This is using Sandra 2003 PRO

CPU Arithmetic:
ALL option boxes checked EXCEPT FOR "Enable multi-threaded benchmarks"
Dhrystone ALU 6163
Whetstone FPU/iSSE2 1349/3154

ALL option boxes checked:
Dhrystone ALU 6520
Whetstone FPU/iSSE2 1349/3155

CPU MM Benchmark:
ALL option boxes checked:
Integer iSSE2 9609
Floating-Point iSSE2 12240

Yours beats them all by a lot except (if I'm reading what you typed correctly) for your ALU Arithmetic score which is closer.

Does anyone have and gaming benchmarks for this board, on board sound vs Audigy2. I really want to know how big of a hit games take with the on board sound. Maybe some enterprising person out there with an Audigy2 card will do this for me.

The Northbridge fan fell off the other day, how important is it?
Can I just disconnect the fan cable and take it out or should I try to find a way to reattach it?

lkaufma1...156°F is a bit too hot, but I think someone said in this thread the mobo's temp reporting is not accurate. You should find a temperature probe and try and stick it as close to the CPU chip as you can and see what it reads. I've used a $10 LCD thermometer before with indoor/outdoor sensors, and took the outdoor sensor (that's on the long wire) and used it. Also feel the backside of the mobo and see if it's hot.

Have a good recommendation for a good HSF if I need one? Preferrably quiet...

I definitely need a new HSF if I am to OC this thing. I can't run Prime 95 for more than 5 minutes before 70 C is here and my alarm goes off.

Not sure if this has been addressed in the previous 15 pages, but I'll ask anyway... does anybody know if this board has the same type of heat sensor issue as other ABIT boards? I'm hanging comfortably at 42C for CPU and 32C system regardless of whether I have the case open or not. I know my cooling is decent, but am wondering if I'm trying to push these temps down when the system already is as low as it can get anyway! Any thoughts?
