I definitely need a new HSF if I am to OC this thing. I can't run Prime 95 for more than 5 minutes before 70 C is here and my alarm goes off.

i got a thermaltake spark7+
it maxes at 6000 rpm but ima tell ya at that speed it sounds like a hair dryer in ur case
but keeping the fan at about 4000 rpm it remains relativily quiet and keeps the cpu much cooler

For a HSF comparision, go here.

But first, READ THIS about a virus at the site!! I just got the virus warning again on that EXACT PAGE! GO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

If I use the SATA does that disable one of my IDE ports?
I want to run a SATA HDD, and 2 CD drives, one on each seperate IDE channel
But when I try, it seems one or other IDE channels won't work w/ SATA enabled
Help?

I know you posted this forever ago, but I discovered that the IS7 will not support Celerons less than 2.0 GHz. I tried two different 1.8s to no avail. The voltages are supported and supposedly a BIOS update helped the board to recognize them, but it was all no good.
As soon as I went to the 2.0 GHz one it was all good!

I know my cooling is decent, but am wondering if I'm trying to push these temps down when the system already is as low as it can get anyway! Any thoughts?

I'm going to switch from a P4B chip to a P4C chip and I was wondering if I had to format after the swap?

I hope to hell not! Can anyone answer that??

Reliant, I don't see why you'd need to reformat just for that. I'd try it, but just to be safe make sure you have a mirror image or everything backed up since you seem to think it may cause a problem. Why do you ask........have you heard that a reformat may be necessary?

Tman did you look at the manual? I just glanced at it and it appears that you have to set the SATA1 and SATA2, to IDE3 MASTER & IDE4 MASTER (or IDE4 & IDE3) for the IDE's 1 & 2 to work (modes 7 and 8). See page 59 of the pdf manual. Let us know if that fixes it.

You do not loose any IDE ports. Make sure that both drives on the IDE are set to master (If the only drives). Also make sure you are using the latest BIOS. There is a setting (can't recall off the top of my head) that enables you to increase the IDE detection by a couple of seconds. This seemed to help alot of people out with the first couple of bios's.

You do not need to reformat. If using WinXP it will automatically detect the HT processor. Just make sure it is enabled in the BIOS.

OK... so what are the expected differences? I mean, can I figure something like 10 degrees? 5 degrees difference? Are these sensors showing warmer temps than they really are?

I would say 7-10 degrees C on the warmer side. Also you have to remember that the BIOS has a throttleing temp so if you are hitting 60+ on a regular basis I would change the throttle temp in the BIOS to 80C. I believe the new BIOS already has this set.

So since my CPU currently reads 40C at idle, 32C PWM temp, and 28C system temp - I can figure that this is a well cooled system because it should be more like 30C CPU, 22C PWM, and 18C system??? I'm only running stock HSF and TT Smart Fans (2 intake, 1 exhaust) as well as 1 system blower (32cfm).

Maybe I'm ready to overclock???

Oh, BIOS does have CPU warning temp default at 85C - is this what you meant?

You do not need to reformat. If using WinXP it will automatically detect the HT processor. Just make sure it is enabled in the BIOS.

Thanks much

Hi just built my new system and had a few questions.

System is a Abit IS7 (bios 16), 1x512mb ddr400 (corsair value), Intel Celeron 2.0ghz (400mhz), Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, IBM Deathstar 40gb, ATI Radeon 9800np. Everything seems to work so far but here are my questions. I'm not planning on any overclocking.

1) My memory score in sisoft sandra maxx was 1990 or so. Is this correct? Seems low but maybe an 800mhz processor, and having a 2nd dimm really does improve performace that much? ( on boot it says DDR400 specs, host dram 100/133 and AGP/PCI 66/33 are these correct?)
2) Should I go with the default sound or my TB Santa Cruz for sound?
3) Looks like I got the 3com gigabit lan, i have an Intel 10/100 pci card, should i just stick to the 3com?
4) What are the best BIOS settings for this board? I plan on reviewing the forum tomorrow but doesn't hurt to ask.
5) Can you only go into the SATA RAID menu (ctrl-I on bootup) when you have a serial drive? IF so do you suggest enabling raid for future use if I get 1 drive now?
6) Any other helpful hints/tips?

Any good FAQs other there also on maybe this mobo. or the 865/875 chipsets?
Thanks

I guess i forgot to add I'm planning on this type of setup for storage. 1 WD raptor 10k 40gb drive for my main drive on the serial ATA. I'm still debating about keeping the ibm drive, but i will be utilizing my DVD-rom and CD-RW on ATA IDE 1/ATA IDE 2. Any thing I should be aware of or changes I need to make?

Your memory score will increase if you get a second stick. That host DRAM does not look right. Make sure you do not have any dividers set in the BIOS.

2) Should I go with the default sound or my TB Santa Cruz for sound?

That is up to you but the onboard sound is pretty good.

Stick with the onboard

How do I adjust this? Right now it's 100/133. I tried playing around but all I did was slow it down it seems.

briant73, "Orion" already replied to that. You need to post which version of Sandra you're using, and which options are enabled for that specific module, and if that's buffered or unbuffered.

It's hard to tell from your posts what you are saying or what you are quoting. If quoting someone, then you should use the "Quote" button on the toolbar when you type, or mentioned their name, or maybe put it in italics.

You cannot "enable" dual channel mode with only one stick of memory and your bandwidth is severely limited with only one stick. The IS7 is a dual channel memory mobo so at least two IDENTICAL sticks have to be used for DC operation.

FWIW, With only one stick in my old Asus P4B533 (845 chipset and NOT a DC mobo) I get over 2100 on the "memory bandwidth benchmark" w/1.8a @2.5ghz, which is pretty bad (Sandra 2003 Pro, all module options checked). So, you should be getting much more than 19xx. With the Unbuffered boxes unchecked makes it go all the way down to 1600+.

I don't have the mobo yet so I can't say exactly about your settings, but you appeared to have fixed a typo (100/33 now 100/133). As far as the memory dividers; again I can't say where exactly, but I think what Orion is saying is set them to 1:1 instead of 5:4 or 3:2. You'll just have to look around in the BIOS to find them. They may be under "advanced chipset config" and you may not see them if any memory timings are set to "auto".

I can't get in to my bios!
My computer posts just fine, shows the cpu speed and mem speed and all that, and works fine in windows.
When I hit del to get in to the bios I get a blue bar at the bottom of the screen with a blinking cursor at the top, any clues?
