Problems getting my SATA hard drive to work
---------------------------------------------------------
Right now I have a 120 and 80 gig ATA drives. The 80 needs to be sent back for a replacement cause it sounds like it is about to die as it vibrates a lot, hums loud, then quiet, LOUD, then quiet, LOUD, then quiet. Motor? Anyways... I'm borrowing this 120 gig maxtor SATA to backup my data until it gets replaced. I guess the important peice of info would be that I have an A-Bit IS7 motherboard. So how do I get it to work with my system? Unlike pata HDDs, this one wouldm't work when I simply plugged it in and booted up.

Who out there has experience with an IS7 and SATA?

You need to go into your BIOS and enable the SATA controller.

Well, I've been playing around with the settings for quite a while now and can't get Windows to detect it. I guess I just need to know which HDD to plug in where and what the BIOS setting should be. Here's what I have...

120 GB WD - System drive
80 GB Maxtor - Storage
120 GB SATA Maxtor - Will backup 80 GB Maxtor

So what should my configuration be? Currently it is as...
IDE1 Master - 120 GB WD
IDE2 Slave - 80 GB Maxtor
SATA1 - 120 GB Maxtor

What should my BIOS settings be?

I believe I have been asking the same question for weeks now. I have:

120 GB SATA - System drive
IDE1 Master - 40 gig
IDE1 Slave- 30 Gig
IDE2 Master - DVD RW
IDE2 Slave - DVD/CDRW
I cannot get the system to recognize the 2 PATA drives when everything is connectedl. When I disconnect the DVDs I can get it recognize the HDDs. I've swtiched from IDE1 to IDE2 and both channels work, but not at the same time.

Orion, there u are...

I remove CMOS battery & unplug power to clear CMOS...Ya complete the update BIOS process untill it asked me to reboot.

Actually it was my capture card that block the reboot. I remove it and reboot, it works. Then I fix the card back after done the BIOS setting. If I wanna setup my bios setting, I need to remove the card again. I came accross this problem before, but forgotten how to solve this. Now my PC skip the Bios setup page, straight into Windows.

Any idea how to overcome this?

As soon as you start the PC, start hitting the "Insert" key this may work to get you into the BIOS. Have you tried switching PCI slots for the capture card?

Two things to Try. ( I am going from memory since I am at work)

First I am a true believer of not running a CDRW and DVD/CDrom on the same IDE port so my first sugestion is to put the DVD-RW on IDE1 as slave and the 30gig on IDE2 as master. Make sure none of your drives have the cable select jumper selected. Also make sure the jumpers on all drives are correct.

Next, in the BIOS there is a option for "IDE Delay" (I think that is what it is). It gives you the option to increase the delay for the detection of IDE drives.

Try these and let us know.

I notice that it is supposed to fix a CAS issue when using dividers. Has that helped anyone here with CH-5 memory get above 250MHz FSB using dividers?

A quick question regarding doing the BIOS update in Windows XP. So Do I just simply run the Abit Flash updater (ver 1.3 i think) and pick the BIOS then reboot? Do I need to do anything such as remove the CMOS battery or reset the CMOS jumper?

You don't need to remove the CMOS battery. If I remember right the BIOS flash reset my CMOS to its defaults, so I just had to reset them. I don't think I had to use the jumper at all.

Same here...it downloaded the most recent bios, did it's thing, rebooted & wallah!
I did notice, however, that if I had the cas set too tight in the bios, when it rebooted I got 3 low-toned beeps & a "Bios Rom Checksum Error" message. Was trying to run my PC3500 HyperX @ 2-2-2-6. Called Kingston support & they said their techs recommend 2-3-3-7. I thought when they said the memory ran @ Cas 2, it would run 2-2-2-6...guess I was wrong. Ran memtest (100 passes) & got no errors, tho...was kinda hoping i'd get some so perhaps I could find better ram for this motherboard...i'm starting to wonder if it's CH-5. It seems I got ram that won't do 2-2-2-6 and a 2.6c that'll max out @ 2.8. Such is life.

It is HIGHLY recommended that after a good flash, you should reset the BIOS via the jumper. Some people are having luck not doing it and other have to. Me I have to or my SATA raid array does not work.

Hi Everyone
I am thinking of getting the same board with P4 2.4C with Kingston Hyper X (2x512) DDR 400. Should I stay with this one or go with Asus?

The IS7 is a fine board. If you have the extra cash to spend than I would recommend the Abit IC-7

I have had an IS7 for about 3 months now running a

3.0C P4 at well... 3.0G =/
2 sticks of Kingston 512 3200
Seagate Cuda 120G HD
128MB 5200 FX
Stuffed in an Antec Sonata

All was fine until the line in (lime green) jack on the onboard sound stopped playing the right speaker =( I switched speakers and the same thing. The front line in works, I wired that one up myself, but the rear us shot. Anyone else having Onboard Audio Problems?

Can I still RMA this board through newegg even with the board being 3 months old? Thanks, friends!

Haven't heard of that problem before. Have you looked at Abits forums yet? They have a pretty good online RMA process as well.

Hi, Just changed my CPU to 2.8 Gb (C)...

Anybody can suggest the OC limit?

I'm still using the 512 PC 2700 DDR Kingston Value. Definitely have to stick to 5/4 timing....

Can somebody tell me what to do with my RAM timing like 2.5-3-3-7...? How to change that setting accordingly?

It is something you are going to have to experiment with. Just remember to disable the last two settings under GAT.

Hey-

Hope someone can shed some light on this problem I having with my IS7-E.

System is a follows:

Intel 2.4C
2x256MB of Geil PC3500
40GB Maxtor HD
9800 Non Pro
Antec Sonata case w/ Truepower 380 PSU

The current bios it is running is the one dated 7/14/2003 and I'll tell you why.

This board has a nasty habit to boot all the way to XP and then reboot and reboot and reboot and so on and so on. It is like it gets caught in this nasty loop. Usually if I go into bios during its loop it will correct itself. It does not do this all the time but enough to be a pain in the arse.

I thought if I updated to the latest bios that it may fix it.. 11/15/2003 I think? Anyways once I did this the machine proceeded to reboot every single time and no matter what I did it would not stop! Luckily I ws able to get it stable enough to flash back to the older bios.

I too also have the issue(is it still an issue?) with the what I consider higher than normal temp readings...idle about 45C but soars to the 60's while gaming?? That cant be good can it?

Oh and this rig was in another case, a SLK3700AMB with a 430W True Power PSU and it did the same thing and had the higher temps also.

Does this sound like a MB or a memory problem? Don't have any extra 3200 kicking around but do have some Buffalo Winbond coming tomorrow...although by the sounds of some posts heer that is not the right stuff for this MB

Thanks and look forward to any replys!

Ugh, now this is starting to piss me off. The Corsair XMS3200 GB kit I just bought works EVEN LESS than the Kingston HyperX PC3500 I bought a while back.

The HyperX wasn't stable at 208MHz (260FSB) but it would boot. The Corsair won't even post, at SPD timings of 2.5-8-3-3.

Current setup:

IS7, BIOS 17
P4 2.4C @ 3.0GHz
5:4 memory divider (250FSB/200Mem)
Timings: 2.5-8-3-3

Are CH-5 chips the culprits yet again in this stupid memory mystery? Somewhere mentioned Corsair was using BH-5 on their products but it looks like I got the shaft, yet again. I probably won't even bother now trying to get a higher overclock. I'm happy with the 3GHz and gig of memory I have.
