An interesting update to Tom's Hardware's article about how Asus "enabled" PAT on their Springdale board..

"Update, June 4, 2003: a day after this article was posted, the BIOS version 1.3 Beta for the Abit IS7-G, a rival product, arrived. The initial tests show that Abit has made the same leap in performance and is now at the same level as Asus. Thus, the frame rates in Quake 3 have increased from 366 to 418 fps - this may be a sign that Abit has also activated PAT. "

Hope this is accurate.

I have a similar issue. My old mobo is gone and I have a P4 2.0GHz + 2x DDR400 memory chips. The deafault FSB for the processor is 100MHz. I consider purchasing of IS7, because I like the optical spdif. But I am not sure, if this mobo would allow me overclocking the CPU without overclocking the memory, i.e. running the CPU at say 140MHz while having the memory fixed on 400MHz. Any ideas? What does the BIOS setting DRAM ratio "By SPD" mean?

thanks,

Petr

I still can't overclock.
I raised the Vcore 1.6 and DDR voltage 2.70. I did all you suggested above.

I'm not sure its a memory limitation. Setting manual timings is possible at 1:1 ratio so I set those timings at default speed. The RAM can run at 3200 with 2.5-6-3-3 with CPU at 200 FSB. At 250 FSB and 5:4 ratio the it crashes in games (sometimes in prime).
Is there any diff for the memory at 200 FSB whether its at 3.0 GHz or 2.4GHZ? Memory is still at the same speed.

I think the problem lies with the chipset.

And also my chipset fan is so LOAD. It spins at 6500 rpm (I checked it-its true). It way loader than any other fan in my case. Is this necessary? Other mobos have just a passive heatsink. Could you just remove the fan?

It says IS7-G. But I'm guessing the BIOS version 1.3 Beta would be for the IS7 also since they are simply the same exact board except for a few features or am I wrong? Also what color is this board? I see pictures of this board in a red orange color but on newegg the board looks brownish yellow like the Asus boards. What color boards are people getting from newegg?

I'm sure the bios for the IS7 and IS7-G are the same. The color of the board is orangeish-red or reddish-orange.

I returned my IS-7. Got a Gigabyte 875P instead.

Actually it seems much more friendly. Better instructions and better color.

whatevere works best for ya...I just hope my P4P800 performs up to my liking. The IS7 did great for me while it worked...pittly Newegg ran out just after my RMA got there. 250Mhz FSb without any extreme adjustment of vcore is great. got my 2.6 to 3.2

I just got my RMA from Newegg and all is well with the OCZ PC3500 EL memory. Booted up the first time at 225FSB and did not change anything else except locked the PCI/AGP freq. Will up it some more later once it has been folding at 100% on both pipes for awhile.

Can anyone reel quick give me what the FSB should be if I'm on the 5:4 ratio to make the DDR at 433mhz? I am going to try the beta BIOS this weekend. I sure like my Gigabyte board since it has the "Dula Bios" enabling you to flash one and if it does not work you can use the other.

I am currently stable at 250 FSB Vcore of 1.6V and using the 5:4 ratio. For some reason the OCZ memory defaulted to 2.5/3/3/7 and the specs are 2/2/2/6. I will change these after I try and go higher on the FSB. This board seems to be running more stable that the last one. However the CPU is reporting about 7C higher temps. I do have to give the new style retail Intel cooler the big thumbs up. I put a Zalman and my temps were @70C with the fan at max. With the Intel they are at 63C.

There is a B3 release of the bios that enables PAT and significantly increases performance and fixes some of the memory timing issues. They had it up on their FTP yesterday but it is gone and I did not download it. It would look lile "is7g13b3.zip" or "IS7g_13.b03" this. If anyone has it lmk and I will test it. The B1 that is on their FTP seems to be working OK. No issues so far.

Gainward Ultra 650/8x
SB Live Value
Quantum 40GB
Creative 24x CDROM (secondary slave)
Sony 16x DVD-ROM (secondary master)

The Creative drive running as slave cannot read any disc. The Sony drive works normally. Changed the Creative to master drive and Sony to slave drive, the problem is reversed. Now, it's the Sony drive (running as slave) that is giving me problems.

I reboot the system to DOS, both optical drives are able to read the disc now. What could be the problem?
I hv also noticed in Device Manager that there is a yellow exclamation mark beside USB controller under Other Devices.
I have installed the latest Intel INF so what could hv caused the problem? Btw, i connected the 2nd USB header to the 2 USB ports provided on the front of the casing. The 1st USB header is not connected.

One last question, i hv read that the default voltage for 2.4C is 1.45V, but in the BIOS, the lowest voltage setting i can find is 1.525V, is the info i hv read wrong? Apologies for the lengthy post ;o

The vcore is 1.525 at default for the P4C.
the USB problem is related to USB 2.0 drivers I believe...have you installed Sp1 for XP?
Have you checked your IDE cable? Maybe try it on channel 1 and see if it works for your main drives.

Hope you work it out.

Thanks guys, managed to solve both problems by installing XP SP1.

The newest BIOS 13 does enable PAT just like the ASUS boards do.

My Scores With BIOS 10 at 400MHz DC

  • Sandara Memory Bandwidth: 4300/4300

My Scores With BIOS 13 at 400MHz DC

  • Sandara Memory Bandwidth: 4900/4900

I was using two 256Mb Corsair XMS 3500 modules with CAS 2-6-3-2 settings

This is a killer board for $105!

My wife and I are just novice computer builders. We are posting this just so that other people can know about our experience with this Motherboard (as we extensively used all your experience, insight and comments before assembling our first computer).

We have neither over clocked it nor intend to do it.

The config:
P4 3.06 Ghz @ only 533 FSB
PC 2700 Ram 2 strips of 512 MB each (Not dual memory)
Abit IS-7 Mother Board
300 Watt case with 2 fans
Bought all those at Newegg.com website.

OS: Windows XP professional OEM
Bought @DLJ Computer.

Main use: .NET development using Visual Studio.NET

Assembly of the motherboard was a breeze. One screw on the right hand side (away from the extension slots) was impossible to screw on, as part of it was under the IDE2 slot. It is useless.

We designed the fans such that both fans suck air out of the case, as our fans could only be located in a 90 degree angle close to each other. If we had 1 sucking in and one sucking out, we felt thermal cooling would not be uniform through out the case.

XP installation was a breeze and working beautifully until this moment.

We assembled the computer in our living room and have been using it in a corner of our living room, with room temperature constant at 70.5 degrees Farenheit. We have used our computer on and off for three days and all these three days it has been running continuously.

The PC Doctor software that came with the motherboard tells us that our processor is at about 43-48 degrees centigrade, that is about 113 degrees Farenheit.

Another problem with the mother board is the location of internal Audio headers and FP-Audio 1 headers. They are behind the extension slots and if we use more than a couple of PCI cards they almost crush the cables that come out of these headers, that is if we run those cables below the cards. If we run the cables above the extension cards, the cables need to be really long (longer than the diagonal length of your case, as CDROM drives in the first few slots and these headers are located diagonally opposite to each other in a normal mid-tower case).

Another problem we faced, that must be unique to our case-motherboard combo, was that the fire-wire port headers had more pins than the ones that came with the cables of my case. Instead of risking a mal-function we decided to use the additional ports that came with the motherboard that could be installed in the extension slots. Two thumbs up to ABIT for this fore-thought!

In essence, we love this motherboard and this new computer. Assembling this computer was a totally humbling and learning process. We thank you all and Anandtech website for giving us plenty of reading material that gave us the knowledge and confidence to pull this off.

Results looks good. Heard that ardOcp will be posting their review of the IS7 tomorrow.

Will probably be ordering the IS7 later this week

Damn - posted too soon

The Beta BIOS versions listed in this thread seem to be applicable to the IS7-G. Will they work with a regular IS7? Has anyone here tried?

Thanks
